Good morning, Weekenders! I have a few new-to-me beers planned for the long weekend. First up: Haunted House, a 6.66% ABV "hoppy dark ale" from Allagash.

So ... Cascadian Dark Ale, then, right? Sure enough, this is listed as a Black IPA in the database. It isn't particularly black, though; rather, it's a dark but vibrant brown. And, well, it isn't really all that hoppy.

It doesn't scream porter to me, but it certainly leans more that way than IPA on most sips. It's got a lot more in common with Guinness than it does any IPA, and funny enough, with less roasty bitterness. Hop expression is tasty but mild.

This beer speaks restraint from start to finish. It's really, really enjoyable, but it doesn't blow me away. Full notes in the review:

Overcast weather today = hanging out inside, watching soccer and enjoying a few new beers. First up is Exoteron, a BA Imperial Stout with Coffee by E9 Brewing Co. This was received from the ever generous @snaotheus, who when he isn't trying new beers all over the world can often be found sending ninja boxes of beer to unsuspecting BAs.
Most stouts look the same to me, but this one stands out due to its dense deep tan colored head with excellent retention and lacing. A very good looking beer. Aroma is rich and chocolate, with plenty of coffee roast.

Taste is much more coffee forward than the nose. Plenty of bitter, dark roast greets the initial sip. Some malty sweetness sneaks through here and there, but this is very clearly a coffee beer. Not quite as viscous as I thought it would be.

    Overall, very tasty beer.

Unrelated....nice clear sky last night. Milky Way much clearer up here in NH vs. at home in CT where there tends to be more light pollution.

Very impressive shot @Roy_Hobbs. That is perhaps my favorite thing about or Vermont trips, the clear night sky. We almost got zero star nights this trip but finally on the last night the stars were there in all their glory.

Toppling Goliath Brewing Mosaic Mamba. A NEIIPA with Mosaic and Galaxy hops. The look is gorgeous. Butterscotch color, murky, swampy, and thick, with a tall white covering, which quickly evaporated. The smell is very familiar for a Toppling Goliath Brewing beer of this style, but it has its own signature. Butter, onions, grapefruit, and blueberry. Delightful. The taste is also familiar, yet unique. Lighting butter, tangerine, grapefruit, and onion, with a slightly bitter finish. The mouthfeel is soupy, thick, juicy, and full, with medium carbonation. Overall, this is a great addition to Toppling Goliath Brewing's NEIIPA lineup. It is not one of my favorites, but it is definitely in the upper half of how I would rank them.

Do you think that was intentional by the brewery?

Or maybe they had a fermentation issue (i.e., perceptible diacetyl) in this batch of beer?

    Cheers!

P.S. I am not a fan of butter aroma/favor in my beer!

Enjoying the Labor Day weekend. Doing some household chores but mostly just sitting around and watching TV.
My new beer for today is Fred's Roggenbier from OEC Brewing, an under-appreciated style in my opinion.
The beer is a dark copper color with a beige head that persisted. Tiny bit of lace.
Caramel aroma, bread, sweet fruit, floral hops.
Nice taste. Caramel, banana, toast. Tiny bite of hops.
    Medium-bodied, easy-drinking.

Saint Arnold has a new year round IPA out now.

Eclipse, witch of course has Eclipse but also Citra hops. 7.5% ABV.

Pours with the lightest amount of haze, a yellow/orange color. A dense white head forms with excellent retention and lacing for days.
Big fruity aromas up front. Citrus, melon, and apricot. Simple but very enjoyable and inviting.
Taste wise, like the nose, big hoppy fruity flavors up front, that become a bit "juicy" as the saying goes. Honey, melon, ripe apricot is very nice. The fruitiness leads to this being a bit sweeter, but still a light bitterness lingers.
A medium body and moderate carbonation. There is a slick and oily feel here as well. Really easy to drink overall. I can come back to this with ease.

I would like this to have a more crisp bite, but other than that this is a spot on new age IPA. The Eclipse and Citra hops are work really well here. This is going to be a new year round IPA for Saint Arnold, and I think it is a hit.

Overall score is 3.99, which is B+ bordering on an A- for me.

I have three short books to work through on this long holiday weekend. It has been an entire summer, and I haven't read any Larry McMurtry. That is a shame, so I have his collection of essays on Texas...In A Narrow Grave. I also have Concerning the Future of Souls by Joy Williams and Michael Ondaatje's latest poetry collection, A Year of Last Things.

It is their trademark aroma/flavor for the style, and I love it! To clarify, it is electric butter, not traditional table butter.

Good Morning, my fellow beer enthusiast. I hope this Labor Day weekend is good for everyone. I started my morning with Hipster Catnip, a beer I received from @Braunmeister_1943; I have been imbibing a few beers he generously gave me from the trade. David has generously provided me with beer from several new breweries in and around Pennsylvania. I will post pics of the beers I am quaffing on in my next few posts over this long weekend. Hipster Catnip (a cool name for a beer, BTW) was a juicy beer from Citra then the Mosaic comes in from behind with the floral, tropical, pine, and grassy flavors. The lactose helped with the mouthfeel, and the malt backbone was firm, giving the beer balance. The nose was weak, but the taste made up for it. I am drinking Brace for the G's next by Drekker. Have a great day!

Seeing the clear night sky and talking about light pollution reminded me of a project I was fortunate to work on. I work in Jackson WY, the heart of Tetons. They built and Observatory on top of Snow King Mountain. It get dark on the mountain and I yet to experience the night sky thru the telescope. The telescope placed in the Observatory it one of largest in the west. I was told it is on par with the one in Hawaii, not sure what to believe not an expert on that subject.

Really darn tasty, but certainly nothing special. Tastes like a pumpkin pie, including the pumpkin (not just the spices). Neither cloying nor artificial. Very nice, and probably more impressive when it first came onto the scene. Full notes in the review:

[IMG] Happy Labor Day weekend! I have not posted on this thread in a while but had to post this one! Firestone “Helldorado” 2016 Blonde Barleywine! I received this in a trade with @colts9016 and boy am I glad about it! What a fantastic Barleywine. The first in fact from Firestone for me. Beautiful amber color with moderate carbonation and a thin head. Bountiful stone fruit aroma with an almost burnt caramel flavor (in a good way). It kind of straddles the line between American and English Barleywine. Absolutely delicious!

My favorite Bar Thread on this site, NBW. Just got back from Counter Weight with this fresh West Coast IPA that clocks in at 6.8%. Why don't we see more new WC IPA's in NE? I know, its about what sells, but I love it when I find them.

Poured from a 16 oz canned on 08/23/24”\ to a Nonic at fridge temp. Purchased hours ago at the source.
3.5 The body is semi-clear and golden. An aggressive almost 3-inch/75mm white puffy head sits immediately after the pour, but fades soon to a single layer. Lacing is aggressive.
3.5 The aroma is mild, slight pine, maybe a little citrus with some mustiness.
3.5 The flavor builds gradually to a pine finish with a citrus background.
3.75 The mouthfeel is medium with significant carbonation.
3.5 Overall, not a smack-your-face West Coast, but nothing wrong and pleasant to drink.

    Sierra Nevada — Nooner

This is the second beer from the Costco Sierra Nevada pack.

Not unlike other SN pilsner attempts, this is a yellow beer with a seltzer-like head.

The nose is grassy yeast with added breadiness when the beer warms up.

The taste is crispy fizzy beer, with no malt, close to Summerfest, but somewhat smoother.

The mouthfeel is thin with an aggressive bitter aftertaste.

Overall, this is not a German pilsner by any means but is an OK beer. That said, I'd stick to SN ales, their pilsners are not my favorite.

Glad you stopped in today @Braunmeister_1943 , I also enjoy Helldorado (both the beer and Nevada festival).

Back with the second of four planned pours provided by Todd @cheeseheadinMinneapolis during our exchange in Sheboygan. This one is is Helles from a new to me brewery out of Saint Louis Park, Minnesota.

Full review linked above. Find this a light and easy Helles, which is what I was in the mood for this lazy afternoon. Brewed consistent with style, growing on me as I enter the second half, I'm enjoying this selection. Thank you Todd!

Have a Kolsch planned for tomorrow, and my first crack at Summit planned for Labor Day.
