Masterworks - Volume 3 welcome bottle from New Groove Artisan Brewery. This is out of SC. Blend of imperial stout and barleywine aged 20 months in Elijah Craig 10yr cask, with black walnuts and Guatemalan vanilla. 13% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours dark brown - almost black.

Nose is amazing. Toffee, Chocolate, vanilla, walnuts, bourbon. Some raisin and a hint of sherry come through as well.

Taste is boozy bourbon, toffee, figs, plums, walnuts, and tons of vanilla. Fudge brownie comes through as well. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy. This is a really great beer. Can't actually tell which (barleywine or stout) is dominant. They compliment each other so nicely here.

Well, the Iowa-Iowa State game came down to a game-winning 54 yard field goal for my alma mater, ISU!

How about the last beer from my mixed 4 pack from Pizza Port, California Honey:
    Appearance: Clear yellow, good head.

    Smell: Bready, with some orange.

Taste: Comes in mildly bready and sweet, then finishes with a big note of orange blossom honey. Medium-light feel, somewhat dry finish.

Overall: Last one from the mix pack, pleasantly surprised as the honey makes a big impact with a nice orange note. Very similar to Mexican Honey from Indeed here in the Twin Cities. Very nice blonde ale!

I can't resist the import selection and turnover at this particular store. Also, Cincinnati is a real beer town with tons of great locals. Picked up beer from Sri Lanka, Lebanon and Korea this trip plus a bunch of German beer and Ohio oktoberfests...

Ha! I've paid full price for a couple more than once (Guinness 0 and Sam Adams... Nothing but the Haze(?)). Granted, I'm not buying them to necessarily be beer replacements, but we honestly don't keep many beverages in the house, and those (to me) are better than water.

At least I'm not paying full price for Fosters :astonished:

Jokes (perhaps), aside - I was a tad upset the local outpost for Commonwealth Brewing didn't have more of their near beer that I liked (2.5% or so) when we stopped in a couple weekends ago.

It is very nice! Much like Central Waters Brewing or Eagle Park Brewing, it retains the character of the original location, while forging its own personality. But I still cherish the early days of 1840 Brewing, when they were only open on Saturdays, and the owner/brewer poured you your beer and told you about everything that went into that beer.

West Coast Cartel - A collab between Liquid Mechanics and Breakside. A west coast IPA. Featuring NZ Cascade, Simcoe, and Strata CGX. 7% ABV.

Pours a relatively transparent yellow with minimal head. Nose is mango, mild citrus peel, pine, orange, wheat, and biscuits.

The taste follows the nose. More pine on the taste. Bread, wheat, slight oak, and a grassy note. Not quite as bitter as a typical WC IPA, but still really enjoyable.

Well it’s been quite the day. Ever do a garage sale? Wasaaay more effort than payback.
So after far too much effort today, I wanted a big beer. This one was in my cellar so I grabbed it.
The regular Kentuckley is quite good, if considerably sweeter than CBS. This is on a whole other level.
The pour is that of a filtered old, used oil- pitch black with almost no carbonation, and therefore head, at all.
The taste is not even close to CBS, but it more like Transient’s Kentuckley but on steroids. Very deep maple flavor with the viscosity to match. The stout itself is present but not the primary player. The coffee is sweetened, not cacao but chocolate, and with God as my witness, macarons.
Yup, this is a pastry stout. But well balanced and very tasty.
The feel is viscous as fresh oil, not the used oil that the appearance implies.
OA, yowsa. Very good, but not for the everyday. Keep this one for a special occasion.
    Cheers!

Another night and another beer from Sully. We have our first travel soccer game tomorrow. I believe we should do well, but the team has been a little rusty at practices this week. We shall see.
I picked up this beer while in PA for a fantasy football draft. Bright Path Brewing out of Jim Thorpe, PA and their Helles Lager, a 4.2% brew. Good way to ease into my evening, I believe.

    onto my review:

Sampling a cellar temp 12 oz can poured into my .5L dimple mug. No date stamp on the can or label. The beer pours a clear golden color with some slight copper hues. A bleached white fizzy head foams up .5 cm and fades to nothing very quickly after the pour.
The aroma on this beer is some grainy malts and a bit of white bread, I also get some spicy hops and a bit of an herbal note.
First sip reveals a pretty light body and smooth texture, very fine and pretty gentle carbonation. Beer drinks very easy, as it should.
Flavor is some grainy note again sweet white bread and maybe little bit of a white grape note. Hops are on the spicy side but very mild, but also a little dry bite comes through on the finish. Never any hint of ABV on this one and my mug is empty very quickly during the sampling.
This is a solid brew , very easy to drink and would enjoy having several of these in a session. Would buy again from this brewery.

I’m more interested in next off season for the Leafs. The contract for Taveras finally ends after this season. They recently took the captaincy from him and gave it to Mathews. I think he’ll take much less money to stay and create cap room. And Marner goes nowhere but re-signs. Chaos as always for the Big Smoke.

    Hoppin frog german chocolate cake
...solid black appearance with no head
...light carbonation with a slick, thick creamy feel.
...aroma is alcohol, mildly astringent, sweet syrupy chocolate, moist rich cake.
. Taste is mildly sweet, dry bitter chocolate, chocolate cake, flour.
...overall its rich and decadent but as @Blogjackets said, its a bit of an odd duck[IMG]

In case anyone else hasn’t already mentioned, those of us that spent way too much time in retail know that “till” is not a verb but what the money in the drawer is called.
Now, I’ve been out of retail for over (many) years so it might have changed, but somehow I think it’s the same.
Damn I’m feeling like a person who has been around the sun more than most.
    Cheers!

one more for tonight, as this one turned out to be fairly beastly in my glass. This is Imprint Beer Company out of HAtfield, PA and their 3 year Anniversary barleywine. Double barrel aged, rye whiskey, then rum. Ive had the bottle for a little over 2years I think.... From @browniewithnuts as part of NFL 33 BIF winnings... I think.

    onto my review:
Sampling this 500 ml bottle that has been in my cellar for over a year. came to me courtesy of a BIF. Pouring into my trusty snifter.
The beer pours a lighter chestnut color with some golden highlights, sits slightly darker in the glass. Only the faintest fizzy beige head foams up on the pour and is almost instantly gone. Very close to still in appearance on the pour.
Aroma is boozy from the top. I get rum and whiskey and general fusol notes. A little black peppery which I also attribute to the booze. No hop character and this one seems like a sipper.
First sip reveals a smooth texture and some stickiness too, if that makes sense. The beer coats my palate and also feels lighter than I would have thought, almost no carbonation feel either. WOO, a lot of heat on this one too! WOW....definitely sipping this the rest of the evening. No ABV listed on label, but it is boozy. ANd its been in my cellar for quite a while.
Flavor is light toffee, then rum and some sharper whiskey notes coming through. A bit of brown sugar and then lots of black pepper bite and heat from the booziness. Never any hop character on this one.
If you like to drink fire, this beer might be for you . I think I enjoy it, but not sure yet as its just very boozy, which I normally like, but this one is hot.
