Cheers to another New Beer Weekend. Thanks for starting us off @Roy_Hobbs .

This beer pours a dark mahogany brown with orange highlight so it is not truly opaque. Has a fat head of mocha colored foam that fell slowly and left wonderful lace at first with a thick layer of foam on top. When that finally fell, it left a bold cap and ring, that fell to soapy spots that left a film. It was extremely attractive.

Nose is roast blackened malt with a strong perked coffee character, bitter chocolate and a light creamy caramel. There was a touch of char and a very light scent of cola. I live that cola scent and flavor in beer. Grassy and floral hop that does not show any citrus.

It drank exactly like like the nose except , despite a light firm caramel flavor , showed me a tiny bit of water on the midpalate. I talk about that idea mostly with lager beer but this one was very clean and it had that pronouncement in the flavor. It did not present any exceptional hops flavor or mouthfeel so I wondered a little about the can's description. The abv was not on the palate except in a bit of lightness in the drink overall and no esters from yeast, no dms and no diacetyl. There was a light firm caramel on the nose and on the palate that did not ruin the beer we with too much sweetness or flavor. Instead it left the middle and the finish slightly creamy which allowed all the dominant roast flavors to preside in the finish, crisp bubble with a little bite but not fizzy. The bitterness was balanced imo and allowed the fullness of the malt to preside throughout the beer. Finished with as little sweetness as possible and a full but not heavy mouthfeel. The caramel made it slightly chewy .

A porter, with its strong flavors compliments red meat. Burgers, steak, venison, fajitas. It goes with sharper cheeses like cheddar and gouda, smoked mozzarella. It can also pair with desserts that feature chocolate and coffee flavors. This was very well done. Thanks to the fresh beer in the mixed pack I was able to try this beer. Packaged on 7/15/24.

It's the weekend now so the least you could do is get up and drink some beer! Cheers.

Good morning, Weekenders! Quite happy to see the thread off to a great start. Allow me to chip in with my own breakfast beer (and light breakfast).

The Bruery Terreaux's Train to Beersel is an 8.4% ABV lambic-inspired wild ale aged in multiple oak barrels. The description on the site and the bottle differ (and indeed it may have changed over the years), as the bottle only says oak, whereas the database entry states two different previous use wine barrels, as well as Brett.

Well, I don't really get any Brett out of this one (nor does the foam support that idea), but it could also be a very young bottle, for all I know, which makes a huge difference with Brett. Same for the potential for wine barrels: I could see it based on the expression on the palate, but I can't say for sure based on the overall flavor profile.

I'll skip to the end here: this is a really tasty beer that delivers what I want out of the style, but it isn't up there with the best in the world in terms of complexity and nuance.

Mouthfeel is fantastic, partially by the perfectly balanced carbonation, and partially from the fairly high (although not unreasonably so) ABV. Tasting notes include pear, apple, hay, tannins, vanilla, light to moderate funk and sourness, a touch of vinegar, and lots and lots of oak.

    4.34 / +0.9%

    Cheers!

*Edit: the cheese was very disappointing, from a really good company, too. It tastes almost nothing like Brie, except for a very light funk. It's more like soft mozzarella - and I'll take Burrata if I want that, thank you. I'm literally enjoying untoasted French bread with butter more, because butter. :stuck_out_tongue:

Bière La Muette X Lupulus ‘Of Wolf And Man’ Triple Wheat IPA

33 cl chilled can poured into a short glass, in Toulouse, France.
Canned in August 2024. 9% ABV.
Popt top sends a bouquet of fruit cocktail aroma as if spewed from an infuser! Beer pours quite handsomely, a full finger of foam tops golden unfiltered liquid. And the carbonation dances wonderfully in its confines.
Nose is fruity, piny, - big blossoms of aroma. There’s a distinct bread note lurkung just underneath all that.
Tastes supurb; it develops in waves.,. this is a wheat beer. No doubt. But the hops rise up like nuclear clouds on the palate. No can listing, but there’s Azacca and/or Simcoe hops in there, delivering the pineapple and mango goodness, dragging along a pine cone. The wheat makes its appearance on swallow, very much alive, then comes good bitterness, and a satisfying wheat beer finish.
    Wowzah.
Mouthfeel is joyously medium-full, and there is perfectly medium carbonation.
Overall, right fine top quality hybrid beer from a small farm brewery,,., and I’m overjoyed to get a hit!

Located in the heart of the Vendée countryside, in Bazoges-en-Pareds, France, since June of 2014, La Muette farm brewery is masterfully managed by the great enthusiast Maxime Tripoteau. Knighted by the brewing world, as well as by amateurs, this young master brewer is recognized for his "contribution at the highest level to the influence of France's gastronomic heritage". Between tradition and modernity, his beers are brewed on lees from hops, malt, yeast and water - in the farm’s barn. They do not contain any additives or preservatives.

Proudly anchored in the farm brewery approach, the barley to be malted is directly produced on the family farm, the wheat and hops will eventually also become "made at home".

Goose Island Beer Dapper Rye double bourbon barrel-aged rye stout. 16.5% ABV. Courtesy of @ChicagoJ. The look is thick and deep pitch black. There was no foam that developed. The smell is strong with bourbon, then chocolate and vanilla followed, and I perceived a bit of caramel. The smell is strong, but enticing. The taste is powerful. Bourbon is right up front. Bitter chocolate emerges, with invitations accepted by vanilla, pepper, and caramel. This is delightful. The mouthfeel is hot, oily, silky, and smooth, with light carbonation. Overall, this is incredible beer to experience. Thank you, @ChicagoJ!

Good morning, all. Had a nice long kayak this morning, now it's time to bunker down and watch some soccer while I enjoy a new beer or two.

First up for me is Tree of Bliss, a Tree House barleywine that was aged for 36 months in bourbon and cognac barrels. I probably bought this intending to send it in a BIF and just forgot to include it in a box. Best guess is that this is 2-3 years old. Not sure the ABV is as hefty as what @GreenBayBA is enjoying, but I'd guess it's in the same general area. First time I can recall a Tree House beer not stating the ABV.

Pours a deep, deep brown with a slight reddish tinge as it comes out of the bottle. No way any light is getting through here. I was able to tease out a small beige head that didn't last long, but did settle with a nice persistent ring.

Aroma is full of rich toffee and caramel notes, but with enough alcohol kick to make me cough when I smelled it up close. As it warmed, more barrel notes emerged adding some welcomed depth.

Taste is interesting. Not getting the caramel / toffee from the nose, but I am getting some barrel, roast and some nice brandy notes. The more I sip this, the more I pick up orange flavors on the finish. Very full mouthfeel. Chewy and silky.

Overall, this is a very good beer.

Our son and his girlfriend are visiting from Albuquerque, and they brought several ABQ beers with them. First up is Plateau Porter from Lizard Tail Brewing. ABV is 6.8%.
Very dark brown/near black color. Small tan head, no lace.
The aroma is a little lacking. Slight roasted malt.
Taste improves over the aroma. Espresso, burnt toast, a little sweet chocolate.
    Medium-bodied, a little bitter.

Clear, golden body; dense carbonation; thick, sculpted head, white with a creamy frothiness. Outstanding aroma; very floral with a touch of sweet berries. Light cereal grain note; cracker; mild sweetness; superb hop bitterness. Medium-light mouthfeel; crisp.

This beautiful pilsner offering rocks. Balanced with a very nice complexity in flavor and topped with a wonderful scent.

We let some friends of a neighbor of our use our place a few weeks back and they left a couple beers in the fridge that I wouldn't normally purchase myself. One of them is Voodoo Ranger Juice Force IPA from New Belgium. Let's give it a go.

Canned in July, 2024 so this is ~2 months old.

Poured into a small tasting glass, as the rest of this will be consumed from the can while I float in a tube on the lake. This is billed as a "Hazy Imperial IPA" and I suppose there's some haze, but it's definitely more clear than I anticipated. Light yellow in color with plenty of foamy white head.

I'm not sure what I think of the aroma. It's about as fruity of an IPA as I've ever smelled, but there's a bit of an artificial, almost bubble gum like vibe to it. Very little in the way of identifiable hops.

Taste is similar to the nose, albeit with a mild hop bite. I can't get past the artificial bubble gum though. Very light feel for the ABV.

Overall, some people probably love this. I'm not one of those people. That said, any beer consumed while floating (voluntarily) in a body of water is a good beer!

Nice, seems like you enjoyed this one, as did I...I have one in the fridge right now actually for future consumption

I found it to be different, unique to an extent, and incredibly well balanced; I like that it went into 12 oz cans as well.

    Traquair House Ale
7% wee heavy by Traquair House Brewery

Poured a twelve ounce bottle, the body is brown with a small white head. Not much lacing.

Aroma is a pleasing caramel and oak.

Taste follows nose and adds a sweet malt backbone Notes of vanilla nicely pair with the oak. In the background is peat? This wee heavy is from Scotland after all. Perhaps I should raise our Saltire next time I try one

Mouthfeel is good with low carbonation. Things dry up nicely at finish.

A tasty and satisfying wee heavy for fans of the style.

Can beer afford to be local…?

Inspired partly by above mentioned thread I will have a themed weekend; both same style beers with local ingredients. First up is good old home, aka South Jersey. I’d seen this brewery’s beers start showing up recently and didn’t give them much thought until I learned their history. All former Cape May Brewing employees including their head brewer started a new brewery here called Wander Back Beerworks.

All of their beers use 100% locally grown and malted malt, from Rabbit Hill Malthouse right here in South Jersey; interested readers can click above link.

This is their festbier, all local malt, decocted, etc. I drank last night and tried to take my time to write as accurate a review as I could.

Wander Back Beerworks - Festbier (Wiesnbier 5.7%)

Pours brassy gold, excellent clarity, head diminishes quickly, not much but a film persists, and that quickly disappears to nothing.

Nose is big on pale malt; rich in bread, very light toast, little sweetness, mix of grass and herbal hop character.

Taste pretty much mirrors the nose to a tee; great malt depth, nice bread crust character, then come the hops; herbal is mostly gone, leans into earthy and grass notes, and finishes with a lick of spice.

Body verges right into medium, carbonation is lively and smooth, incredibly clean, appropriately sweet on the tongue; vanishes instantly on the finish; rich malt feel yet so drinkable.

This is one incredibly well made beer IMO; it’s got big malt depth yet huge drinkability, hefty to the perfect degree for the style. Excited to try more beers from these guys and to watch their adventure unfold; cheers to South Jersey beer made with South Jersey malt. I think I’ll check out their pils next time I need beer.

Part 2 of “can beer afford to be local?” planned for tomorrow….from a neighboring state.

Keep up the good work and if you’re a first time ready grab a beer and join us:beers:
