2 questions to the masses. I never got to try DB or TB catch Hell. Partially my fault, partially fast sells as I recall. Anyway, I liked CH, but with drinking only a little and there being so much to choose from, curious whether others think it would be wise to just wait/focus mostly on DB/TB over going all in on single CH.

Also, did anyone end up trying Land Shook this year? Was surprised to see not even one comment.

My tastes are changing these days, and I find the Half Acre stouts very syrup-y. I don't think they are using syrup, but the mouthfeel is sludgy & sticky. That's my impression of Before Land Shook, a beer I absolutely loved, like, a year ago. Pretty sure the beer isn't that much different, if at all.

Everyone is different, but personally I only like those beers if I am not drinking a lot of them. Like, one a week or something.

I think all of Catch Hell is excellent and worth your time and money. I prefer it over Benthic by a good amount. Haven't tried this version of Shook.

@GuyFawkes totally agreed on the syrup-y assessment. I've felt that about Bethic for a while now. Not inherently a bad thing, but not always what I'm looking for anymore these days. I've gotta be in the mood for the motor oil stuff, and 12 oz of it can be a chore even when I am.

I think the "single" Catch Hell has been worth picking up, although I don't necessarily go "all-in" these days. I'll try for and be satisfied with a 2-pack, and I'm so glad they offer that option.

For what it's worth, I found the recent Before Land Shook to be very viscous, as others described. To the point where it left a visible coating behind on my glass. Enjoyable, but I have also preferred Catch Hell in the past. I don't know if the base recipe is significantly different than Shook or the others, or if the cinnamon somehow tempers the mouthfeel.

Vanilla and Cinnamon both tend to “loosen” or “thin out” the mouthfeel, typically. Vanilla, especially. Historically, people used to always complain about BA Vanilla stouts being “too thin” compared to base versions.

I think if you like CH and are okay with thick, sweet stouts, you'll like Benthic. ESPECIALLY if you enjoy coffee and coconut in your beers, both of which it does a good job with imo. As with a lot of Rev's stuff, I tend to prefer the "overtuned" versions with more of everything thrown in, but I've always been an aggro flavors guy.

Before Land Shook was excellent, good amount of vanilla/marshmallow with strong spirit/wood presence and despite being quite thick, the sea salt seemed to tame down the sweetness on the finish.

Catch Hell was the beer that brought my brother in law into craft beer and while the multiple barrel iterations amp up the booziness and round off some edges, the “regular” version has always been one of the best beers they release each year.

Easy grab on Oznr, will be interested to see what the glassware looks like as that’s one of my favorites they put out each year.

This might be the same conversation that we had in the Phase Three thread. Untappd ratings are simply correlated with the amount of final sugar content and body in these beers, so brewers are catering to what people are seemingly after.

There's a certain point of saturation though, there are only so many people that can drink super sugary drinks year after year.

I think it is more about indulgence and people not metering. People find something new they like, and they go all in. And then pretty soon - likely partially because tastes change and partially because people get tired of it - they stop or switch. It isn’t limited to just beer (obviously), but you see this with beer fads. Sometimes it lasts only a year, sometimes longer. Pastry stouts were once king, but they seem to be slowly petering out at least a little.

Friend went and picked up our CH earlier today. Cans to go and there's a nitro version on tap.

Can anyone confirm if Catch Hell is still in the cooler? Was hoping to stop by this weekend.
