Scheduled Database Upgrade: Sep 19

    Heads up! We'll be performing a scheduled upgrade to our production database servers on Thursday, September 19 at 12:00 BA Time (aka UTC; see the time/date at the very bottom of the site).

    It's a major upgrade that'll improve the overall performance, stability, and security of the site and its data, while preparing us for the major forum upgrade that's currently in progress. (Has nothing to do with recent forum access issues.)

    We're allocating an hour to complete this task, during which time the forum will be put into maintenance mode and writing to the database will be disabled (so no posting, reviewing, and whatnot).

    I'll use this thread to post any updates.

    You can also follow me on Bluesky for updates during the process.

    Reminder: this is happening today at 12:00 BA Time (aka UTC).

    For those of you in the United States, that's:
    • 05:00 AM PDT
    • 06:00 AM MDT
    • 07:00 AM CDT
    • 08:00 AM EDT
    Again, we've carved out about an hour for this and the site access will be unavailable until the upgrade is complete.

    The upgrade is complete. And it was a big one. MySQL 5.7 > 8.0 :grimacing:

    (Definitely one of the smoothest production database upgrades that I've been a part of, thanks to the Next Glass DevOps team.)

    Everything is looking good now, so I'm opening this thread up for any feedback/issues.

    Thanks as usual for the work and handling this one.

    Am I imagining things or does the website/xenforo seems much faster now (e.g. opening heavy on pictures thread is instant now).

    Mysqueel 5.7? 2014 called. That version probably hates Hazy IPAs. 8.0 is definitely a new money haze bro.

    Yep. Released on October 9, 2015. Last version was 5.7.44 released on September 20, 2023. Extended support ended on October 31, 2023.

    One of several major updates to come...

    Everything seems to work properly, and I agree with @Shanex, I think there is some faster speed everywhere now.
