Such a fantastic beer to age. I always think of smoked plums when I smell this one. Cheers!

An old Shelton Bros. treat from the cellar. Attractive chestnut color, with just a hint of carb. Well aand surprisingly mellow for a 15% abv! Notes of toasted coconut, burnt toast, wet stone.

Midnight Sun Brewing - Munich Wine. Spicy! It's hot, too - it's fantastic attenuation avoids any syrupiness, and keeps a focused flavor profile of chocolate covered banana, vintage rum, and old spice cabinets.

So damn good. I wonder if the cans will age as gracefully as the bottles? I probably won't risk more than one or two to find out.

From Grimm tonight, Village Green Preservation Society. Aged 2 years in Madeira barrels.

This is quite sweet with lots of vinous booze and just a trace of misplaced funk. Tons of barrel and there just isn't much else here. If you LOVE Madeira you might like this but it isn't my cup of tea.

Tonight I am sharing Barreled Souls out of Saco Maine and their Nebula extended aged barleywine. This 14.5% beer is the Knob Creek barrel version. Just added the beer to the BA DB.
Glad to share this one with you and drinking to forget the travel soccer game today where our team got smoked by an average squad, and we simply did not show up. Enough about that, lets get to beering!

    onto my review:

I am sampling a cellar temp 500 ml bottle poured into my snifter. Bottled on date is 6/15/2023. Picked up at the brewery last November.
the beer pours a clear mahogany color and very little light passes through my glass, there is some deep garnet red on the edges when I hold to the light. A fizzy, dense khaki colored head of about 0.5 cm foams up and fades to a sturdy edge layer quickly after the pour. one wispy island spins from bubbles rising to the surface.
Aroma is malt and bourbon driven with some brown sugar, bourbon, dark raisin notes and maybe a little fruity plum too. No hop character and not boozy or fusol, which is impressive for a 14.5% beer.
First sip reveals a very smooth slightly syrupy textured beer. Very low and gentle carbonation and the beer drinks pretty easy for one of bigger "umph". A little warmth on the finish as it sits in my belly.
Flavor is definitely on the sweeter side with some toffee and brown sugar mixing with some sweet bourbon, not really any char or wood from the barrel in my opinion. I dont get the fruity flavors really that I got on the nose as the brown malt sweetness carries the day.
Pretty solid sipper and Im glad to have tried this one. Would gladly drink another.... IN fact, I believe I have a 2nd bottle downstairs!
    4.4 in the BA DB

lots of maple and cinnamon on the nose and the taste. good barrel presence. solid but idk how i feel about flavor additives in barleywine.

    ok, yes i do: i don’t need them

this was still mighty tasty but glad it was split 3 ways. cheers!!

Flash Point from Bottle Logic, BA bananas foster barleywine. Very excited for this! Banana stouts are amazing and barleywines are better than stouts so...

The sweet, boozy base barrel and barleywine definitely shines through, up front in particular. Brown sugar, dates, toffee, and lots of smooth brown liquor are all here in abundance. The banana and cinnamon come into play mid palate, I wish there was more nanners and less cinnamon but this fun as hell as is. I can't say I find the walnuts anywhere.

I'm enjoying this and I wish I had bought another, but I think banana stouts > banana barleywine.

5 oz. pour. Not sure what to make of this one. Nice malt base but an odd dry bitterness in the finish. Not necessarily bad, but lacks that cozy, warming quality I look for in an English barleywine.

Old Gods from The Eighth State Brewing Company. English Barleywine with Earl Grey tea, toasted coconut, Madagascar bourbon vanilla beans, and Tahitian vanilla beans. 13.4% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a very dark brown with no head. The nose is fantastic. Deep and intense layers of chocolate and vanilla, with a hint of coconut. Wow. A bit of maple comes through a bit as well. Not a ton of complexity, but what's there is amazing.

The taste is really interesting and very good. The tea comes through in a really nice way. Also getting truffle, vanilla, maple, and some brown sugar. It is sweet, but I don't find it overwhelmingly sweet. Super thick mouthfeel. Overall, a really interesting barleywine.

Flash Point from Bottle Logic. Aged in a combination of bourbon and VSOP cognac casks and finished with rum-flambéed bananas, toasted walnuts, and a dash of cinnamon.

Poured at fridge temp from a bottle. Pours dark murky brown with an inch of off-white head. The nose is heavy on the walnuts and bananas. Some toffee and brown sugar, but not really picking up any cinnamon here. A bit of vanilla as well.

The taste is pretty good, but not really my cup of tea (or beer!). The banana really seems to dominate here. The brown sugar as well. It nicely matches the description, I will say. Cinnamon, burnt toffee, and walnuts. It's good, but again not what I'm looking for in a barleywine.

A bit of an unfair comparison since this Bigfoot is from December and this Double Bastard is from April. I could taste the age in the Bigfoot. It's also unfair because Bigfoot is one of my favorite American beers. I tried these blind, but I could tell which was which. They are a lot alike though. Both are lovely but it's really hard to compete with Bigfoot for me.

Bigfoot is fuller (but at a lower ABV). Sticky hop character. The bitterness is more of a building one that hits you in the finish (compared to DB). Double Bastard is thinner (but at a higher ABV). The bitterness is super intense upfront.

It's been a while since I posted here.

Awesome comparison. I have both and might do the same. I'm curious how an Old Guardian would compare to a Bigfoot (both fresh, of course).

Tusk and Feather from GI tonight. Double barrel aged in Elijah Craig rye barrels for 28 months total.

Oh damn this is magnificent, very sticky, both in sweetness and viscosity. The barrel notes are deep and delicious, prickly booze, nutty oak, earthy vanilla, and some heavily toasted coconut. The base barleywine features tons of smooth caramel with some dates and brown sugar. One of the best I've had in a long time.
