After 19 years on BeerAdvocate, and 9 years on Untappd, I'm stepping away from beer ratings for a bit. Things have changed, I have a family now, and I no longer have the time needed to write meaningful beer reviews. It's been a good run, though, and I'm proud of what I've accomplished in my nearly two decades of rating.

During this time I logged 1,530 unique reviews on Untappd and 525 unique ratings on BeerAdvocate, for a total of 2,055 beer reviews. There is minimal overlap between the two accounts, with a handful of beers like Pliny the Elder and Fuller's Vintage Ale rated twice. Otherwise, I've always tried to review something different and have made a focused effort to sample beers from other countries.

Here's the breakdown of my beer ratings:

    Total Ratings - 2,055 (100%)

    Top Countries
    Canada - 1,160 (~ 57%)
    United States - 605 (29%)
    Belgium - 85 (4%)
    United Kingdom - 75 (~ 4%)
    Germany - 60 (3%)
    Other Countries - 70 (3%)
    16 Countries Total

    Top Styles
    American IPA - 256 (12%)
    American Pale Ale - 122 (6%)
    Double / Imperial IPA - 107 (5%)
    Farmhouse Ale / Saison - 75 (~ 4%)
    New England / Hazy IPA - 61 (3%)
    86 Styles Total

    Top Beers (My Rating)
Russian River Pliny the Elder (5, Untappd)
2018 Avery Old Numbskull (5, Untappd)
Toppling Goliath King Sue (5, Untappd)
2016 Cantillon Lou Pepe Kriek (5, Untappd)
Maine Beer Dinner IIPA (5, Untappd)
2019 Avery Old Grumbler (5, Untappd)
Alpine Beer Pure Hoppiness (4.9, Untappd)
Third Moon Dust Made Flesh (4.8, Untappd)
Bellwoods A Stout With Coffee: Not Even Columbia Pedregal #2 (4.8, Untappd)
    Lagunitas Sucks (4.76, BeerAdvocate)

    Top Beers (Global Rating)
The Alchemist Heady Topper (4.7, BeerAdvocate)
Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout - CBS (4.64, BeerAdvocate)
    Trappist Westvleteren 12 - (4.61, BeerAdvocate)
Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout - KBS (4.6, BeerAdvocate)
Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen Oude Geuze - Armand & Tommy (4.55, BeerAdvocate)
    Hudson Valley Apotheosis (4.53, Untappd)
    Founders Breakfast Stout (4.51, BeerAdvocate)
    Trappistes Rochefort 10 (4.5, BeerAdvocate)
Hill Farmstead Society & Solitude (4.47, Untappd)
    Samuel Adams Utopias (4.47, BeerAdvocate)

At 2,000+ reviews, I've only rated a fraction of the estimated 7,000 beers I've tried, but I'm okay with that. When I go to festivals and beer events, and travel for beer, I try to enjoy the moment, rather than being on my phone. Reviews have typically been done at home, when I have time to analyze the beer, record my thoughts, and provide an in-depth review. I've taken a quality over quantity approach to ratings and I have no qualms about that.

I still plan to write some reviews next September to celebrate my 20th anniversary on BeerAdvocate and 10 years on Untappd. And I'll continue to post new place reviews as I believe travelling is the best way to discover great beer (the BA reviews have been an invaluable resource over the years). But for the foreseeable future, the beer ratings are on pause. Thanks to everyone on here for helping me explore delicious beer for the last 19 years. It's been an awesome ride! :beers:

It’s funny, I started getting more seriously into beer and reviewing/rating specifically because I had recently started a family. Our daughter was about 3 years old when I joined BA—I had just started working again after being a stay-at-home dad for about 18 months, and as I found myself with some extra spending money (after being a one-income family for so long), plus lots of time at home and a routine dictated by our daughter’s naps and 12-hour nighttime sleep schedule, I found tasting new beers and trying to thoughtfully capture the experience of drinking them to be a perfectly complementary hobby for my new life. The main thing was always drinking in moderation in case anything happened in the parental realm that suddenly required me to be a fully functioning, responsible adult. That was good too as it allowed me to really savor and experience each new beer I tried.

But there is a season for everything and everyone is on their own journey, so good for you to know when it’s time to get off this particular train. At least every beer you’ve tried is documented and your reviews will serve as a resource for other beer enthusiasts for as long as BA exists. Cheers!

Thanks for the kind words, Orca! I appreciate it.

It's definitely funny and ironic that the very reasons I'm "getting off the train" as you say are the same reasons you got into beer reviewing. But what you've described makes entire sense. I can see how not going out as much, long night-time sleep schedules, etc. could provide more time for reviews, and quality/thoughtful ones at that. In my case work has placed some additional pressures on me, in addition to the family stuff, so it's clear that I need to step away for now.

I wish I could say I've reviewed every beer I've tried, but I haven't quite achieved that. My estimate is that I've reviewed about 29 percent of what I've actually sampled. This is based on my posts in the "What are you drinking right now?" threads on Bar Towel (an Ontario version of the BA forum) and BeerAdvocate, where I logged what I had but didn't review everything. I've also just generally averaged a new beer per day since first getting into craft beer in 2005. To your point, though, I've been able to document most of what I've tried, and I'm grateful for that.

Sad to see a big time reviewer step away, but I understand. All the best with you family! 19 active years on a forum is pretty wild.

I'm closing in on year nine year. I was a consistent reviewer the past several years, but the past year or so I've found myself losing general interest. I still take notes (and score) nearly everything I try. Though the past year, I've found myself directing my thoughts into a notepad (either virtual or physical) rather than reviewing, even when I'm at my own computer. In total, as a conservative guess, my notepads contain 100+ beer notes and scores that I haven't bothered to review yet. Unfortunately, I've begun to find the process of writing reviews tedious and time consuming, especially when factoring in copying over my thoughts into a spreadsheet to serve as a personal back up (BA has never introduced the export feature.) Some of it also feels pointless, with my focus on local beers, nearly all local beers (aside from Boulevard) don't achieve the ten reviews/ratings needed to be assigned a BA score, meaning there is never, and really hasn't ever been, enough local coverage to provide an accurate snapshot of our beer scene. It doesn't feel right for me to solely represent a metro area's beer production.

Like @Harrison8 before I’ve just slightly lost interest recently in reviewing each and every new beer to me, but still tick one that’s more memorable.

Speaking for me, definitely not because of lack of time, maybe fewer motivation and interest into it.

OP: Beyond just the remarkable amount of beers you’ve sampled over the timeframe it’s incredible to stay active for near twenty years here, best with the family - onwards… cheers!

I can relate to that. At one point I had a backlog of roughly 50-75 reviews, all from hand written notes. Quaint and almost laughable now that we have Untappd, and BA allows us to tick without review, but this was around 2012 when I wasn't yet active on Untappd. I wanted to log them on BA but knew it would be ridiculously time consuming to include the full review. Since the notes were all taken in BA format (Look, Smell, Taste, etc.), I ended up just transferring the numbered ratings for each category and my overall impressions. I thought they would just be ratings and didn't think any of them would meet the word count for full reviews. But I was wrong, and almost all of them counted as reviews. Definitely made the push to get them uploaded feel worthwhile.

On a related but not-completely-related note: I noticed you're from Missouri and wanted to say my wife and I had an amazing time in St. Louis and Kansas City this past September. Side Project, Boulevard, and Perennial were obvious highlights, but 4Hands, Schlafly, Urban Chestnut, and the top beer/wine bars also delivered (Bridge, Beer Kitchen, etc.). Van Winkle 2023 might be one of the best imperial stouts I've ever had. In keeping with the theme of the thread, though, I didn't rate it. The fact I'm at peace with that confirms my decision it really is time to hang it up.

I think many of us that have been reviewing for over 10+ years can have some similar feelings as @cratez . I still enter new Places and Beers into the database, at least rate what I can. I can remember the early years I was deep into reviewing every beer. Many times I’d pop a beer and try to review it before dinner but wife would surprise me with dinner on the table earlier than I anticipated and I’d be on the computer rushing my review narrative so I could join the family for dinner. All I needed was 3-5 extra minutes. It probably was very annoying to my wife and kids I’m sure waiting for me to join them. I learned though and glad for ability to do quick ratings now for those situations. At taprooms, I just take a quick picture of the beer list and rate them later on or the next day.

Take a bow, cratez! Your voice has been a help for others.

I can relate to taking a pause with the reviews. Life is always changing and bringing new challenges. Enjoy your pause, and you can always come back.

Thanks folks. It's nice to know that my contributions are/were appreciated, and that BAs understand the need to step back, at least from beer ratings. The BA community is a great group of people. Cheers!

This was a big thing for me when I decided to stop reviewing and rating
It used to be my routine to review 2 or 3 beers every night and, similar to not wanting to be on my phone when going out, I wanted to stop spending so much time on my laptop and hang with my partner

Reviewing beers was a way for me to learn about all the different styles and hone in on my favorites. After I had mostly accomplished that, it then started to feel redundant as I was using many of the same descriptors over and over again. Add to that a bit of a drinking problem and it became clear to me I had to pump the brakes. Every once in a blue moon when I have a beer I could see myself rating a 5, I'll review it or rate it. But that's it

My reviewing pace has slowed quite a bit over the years, but that's primarily because my consumption has dropped. I still enjoy doing a review after my kids have went to bed in the evenings. It's a good way to unwind after the day.

The main reason I review beers is selfish; to track what I've had and which I liked. I mostly drink new-to-me beers to review them, and only occasionally buy old favorites (typically BA dark beers to cellar). If/when I ever step away from reviewing, it will probably be quitting for health reasons, though I could envision dropping back to just rating to save time. It would be hard to break the habit of taking pictures of every beer I have.

That's why I still take private notes, either in a physical notebook or a notebook app on my phone. The notes give me enough information to reflect on what I experienced with a particular beer without taking the time to turn the lists & adjectives into sentences & paragraphs before I then copy it over to my spreadsheet. In a way, it's only 'for me' at that point.

I also take a photo of every beer I have, and with Google Photos, it makes it super easy to find when I had a beer by searching up the image to locate the date and place the image was taken. If it's draft beer, I'll occasionally add the beer name in the description so it can be searched, though I'm less consistent with doing this.
