I am very low on barleywines. I should pick up many Harvest Ales before the craft store dumps them in favor of their new, in process down-sizing efforts. It’d be great if they dumped “old” stock at a discount, but they haven’t really done that so far. It’s very sad to see the two knowledgeable staff fired, replaced by clerks who know nothing about beer, merely making a smaller beer area now.

“Wet stone.” Yeah, I need to steal that for future reference. I’ve had beers where that would have been an accurate description. Then we can get into stone types.

Brewers must cease and desist all efforts to bastardize barley wines into dessert territory. Stouts will carry that load!

I feel your pain. The beer areas of my two favorite shops are shrinking every month. Demand is dropping, I guess. Just not by me!

My last bottle of this wonderful barleywine from Cabin in Calgary. A few years old now, but tasting great. Aged in Pedro Ximenez sherry barrels. 11.9% ABV. Full of rich toffee, slight vanilla, a nice nutty note, sherry, prunes, and figs. So smooth.

Got my Firestone order today, diving right in with a Revolution collab Oakpocalypse Now. Double barrel barleywine involving rye whiskey, red wine, and French oak staves.

Wow there is a lot going on here. Hard to tell what's coming from the beer and what's coming from the barrels but it's wonderfully sweet overall (thanks Revolution!). Toffee, vanilla pastry, short cake, plum pudding, anise cookies, rye spice, black raspberries, and more I can't describe. The body is lightly creamy with gentle carbonation. So many layers, this is a wonderful beer.

I know he loves FW and barleywine but I don't think @Resistance88 would appreciate the sweetness here. Hope you get some @Beersnake !

I tried it on tap weeks ago and it's awful:stuck_out_tongue:

    Kidding

It's not bad... just tasted like Straight Jacket or something.

    Wouldn't recommend it .

Wasn't terrible but nothing like the 2010-13s I've had at the Propagator

Interesting. Did you have it this whole time, or found it recently on a shelf? I've had absolutely awful luck with old barleywines that I've found at stores. I think out of all the 5+ year old ones I've stumbled across, only one or two were good

Need some more of this. Almost impossible to find BA barleywine here. Lucky me I know where there’s a supply

Infinite Syzygy from Temporal in Canada. A barleywine aged in Buffalo Trace bourbon for 18 months. Brewed with a double mash and boiled for 8 hours to achieve intense caramelization. 13.62% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a murky brown with minimal head. The nose is strong bourbon and dark fruit. Raisins, toffee, figs, prunes. Not a ton coming through on the nose.

The taste is incredible. So much barrel. The Buffalo Trace barrels come through with force. Complimented by vanilla, toffee, slight maple, figs, dates, slightly bitter oak, and more booze. Really nice.

The mouthfeel is medium to thick bodied - perhaps a bit thicker than a normal BA barleywine. Likely attributable to the double mash and long boil. Overall, another winner from Temporal.

Time for a barleywine night to start the weekend. This is Barreled Souls "Return of the Barleywine" a 13.7% blended beer with 60% aging in Peerless Rye barrels and 40% aging in Apple Brandy barrels. Beer aged for 11 months and 27days. Brewery is in Saco, Maine for those that arent familiar.

    onto my review:
Im reviewing this beer at cellar temp and pouring into my snifter. Beer was bottled on 9/25/2023. Apparently I added the photo for this beer about a year ago. yay me.
The beer pours a deep mahogany color into my glass. I small dense beige head foams up about .5 cm. This foam fades to a thin edge layer and a few wispy islands on the surface. Beer looks like a barleywine.
The aroma is malty and barrel driven, I get some toffee and dark fruit mixing with a bit of rye whiskey and a good dose of fruity apple notes. Never any hop presence and the ABV is muted here, with no fusol booze notes or peppery spice hit.
Beer feels pretty thick and has a sticky texture, carbonation is mild and fairly soft on my palate.
First sip reveals some more toffee and brown sugar with fig rolling in too. Definitely a sweeter barleywine profile. Again some fruity apple kicks up and carries through to the finish, which is generally sweet and malty, but the finish does allow for some booze. I get warming on the swallow and some peppery bite at the end of each sip. I also get some earthy cinnamon each sip. Not listed as an ingredient, seems an interesting flavor to pick up. It also definitely works with everything else on this beer. Hops never really show through though.
This is a tasty barleywine with interesting flavors that work well together. Glad to have tried this one and would recommend to fans of the English side of barleywinetown.
