Good news is Old Guardian is back. Bad news only available at their stores and online. Looks like I am going to have to take a trip down to their Oceanside location for some.

    from Facebook

Old school Stone fans, this one is for you.

Back for a limited time, and for the first time ever in cans - Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine - is available now in 16oz 4-packs at Stone locations and our online store.

The huge maltiness of this 11% beer is only tamed by an equally prodigious addition of hops, creating a rich, slightly sweet caramel-hued ale balanced with assertive bitterness. As fantastic as it is now, it will evolve into an even more glorious brew with age. (How many of you still have vintage bottles stashed away?)

Well, bummed I'll miss it but glad it's back as a packaged option.

Hopefully it sells well enough for them to consider a limited distribution deal next time

I dunno if I will enjoy this as much as fresh hop Ruination, but I’m happy to verify. Wish it was in bottles not cans so it could be aged long term.

Just glad that there's a barleywine with a touch of hype. I miss that style.

Would have been a perfect addition to the Big Beer Box.

Stone has been a sick local taproom and an overpriced distributing brewery. But at least they've some interesting things out into the wild.

Good thing they're shrinking the national distribution to only shit beer for casuals. It'll leave more room for the great shit at taprooms.

Side note : Was told that they'll be getting less kegs of Arrogant Bastard at the Pasadena location because it doesn't sell well.

    Sign of the times.

I blame all these god damned hop boys

That’s my biggest pet peeve of the beer world: high ABV beer in 16oz cans. It belongs in 12 oz bottles and/or large bottles for social gatherings.

Believe it or not distro people now believe that people are less likely to purchase a 6 pack of 12oz cans than a 4 pack of 16oz cans.

I blame ipa drinking casuals for this as well

Stouts and barleywines in cans is a crime against humanity

    why?

My anecdotal experience is cans are just as good as bottles for aging. I’ve had plenty of aged cans like tenfidy and revolution beers that were excellent aged. I don’t have any research but I could see cans being better because once in a can oxygen ingress would be less than a bottle. Oxygen does give aged beers a different taste, but I find over too much time the oxygen makes the beer worse.

Yeah, I think pretty objectively, cans are better than bottles for aging. Less oxygen ingress as you mentioned.

I wonder if OP just doesn't want a 16oz serving of high ABV beers?

I'm still at an age where that doesn't really bother me. That said, when I'm drinking a stout or something in a 16 oz format, that's the only beer I'm having that day. And it's when I don't have to work the next day.

I don’t have any evidence either way. But I don’t think it’s a coincidence that many classic beers meant for aging like Bourbon County and Bigfoot continue to come in a bottle format.

Regarding Old Guardian in 16 oz. cans, it’s a bit inconsistent on Stone’s part. Their re-releases of old favorites (all stronger beers) have all been 12 oz. cans.

Self-righteous, Ruination, Double Bastard, and Russian Imperial Stout.
