Thank you for the correction! I was running off of memory (a bad one at that). At that cost it just drives home my point even more. I wish these breweries would skip the elaborate packaging because those costs just get passed along to the consumer. Give me the beer at a reasonable cost and keep the box.

Doing fancy packaging once a decade - for an anniversary or something similarly special - fine. But the frequency at which breweries are doing it is a bit obnoxious, unnecessary, and a veiled effort to upsell. Even more annoying, they aren’t passing it on at cost - they are passing it on with a margin markup. Infuriating.

Even this - I guess I get it - but wtf is anyone doing with this fancy packaging after you drink the beer? I had that Very Old box from Voodoo - now it's just in the garage and every time I leave, I'm like...I should really just throw that out. It's utterly useless.

I gave my wife the side project 10 year anniversary box for her stationary and paper products/small office supplies. It’s a beautiful box. That said I would have gladly taken a discount to get the beers with no box

At this point I wish all beer just can in 12oz cans with a white paper label if it meant more reasonable pricing. Love trying stuff and craft beer, but it's hard to justify it like I used to. Being single and having this dumb hobby is a lot different than being married with two kids and still buying this stuff lol.

I go through this all the time - not because of me, as I'm forever single with no kids, but my brother now has 2 kids and a wife and sometimes, I feel like I'm pushing his limits in buying shit - he doesn't even know how much of the stuff "we" get I never charge him for. I view it as an indirect contribution to the boys' college fund.

I still buy stuff, but then I look at the statements and am like ‘why am I the way I am?’

I’m a married 40 year old father and I’ve accepted the fact that I’m going to be chasing beer for the rest of my life. 100% true story, we are closing on a new home here in a few weeks and the loan officer asked me what several PayPal/Venmo beer transactions where I straight up bought beer from someone were for when they viewed my bank statements.

    2. Please briefly explain the following PayPal and Venmo transactions and confirm if any of these are undisclosed debts:

    I’m pathetic.

I’ve cut back some, but next year I intend to make it easier to cut back by not renewing la coterie. I’m in a couple memberships and the $500 in fees alone are just unneeded and removing the option to buy $65 bottles is the easiest way to cut back lol

There are also very few bottles going exclusively through LC anymore it seems. The main upside is the convenience of being able to purchase and pick up when you’d like, but yeah…my wife and I both have a membership and are also thinking of dropping one or both.

i feel like the biggest perk is solo bottles. definitely going to lose that option but if you’re trying to cut back and packages deter spending then it’s win / win.

In the last year I've signed up for a few memberships (Revolution, Private Press and Floodland). Those and Side Project are going to be almost 100% of my high end beer purchases the next year. Those others are all for the most part very easy memberships to split with a friend since you get the opportunity for multiples of most of the beers. I probably would have done zero of those memberships if I couldn't split the cost and the volume of beer with someone while still getting a chance at all the beer. La Coterie is set up in such a way that it's terrible for sharing a membership since almost every big bottle is 1PP.

Exactly this - more bottles may be going to the public, but they're twice as much when you get roped into buying 2 saisons to accompany your bottle.

I agree. This is my first year in LC and Private Press. I'm actually much more impressed with Private Press so far. It's 1/2 the price and I got two great BA stouts included right off the bat. None of the stuff I don't want, like the saisons.

I'm local to Hardywood in Richmond. Many of the locals dumped their memberships or didn't renew because the quality of the product went down. The swag was pretty good though. They're nowhere near the quality of PP or SP though.
