Probably not too many surprises here, since VinePair went straight to the foremost beer experts in the world (i.e. us ) for this compilation.

    Cool.
Just gotta wait 15 years and I'll be in heaven.

Also feel like this article gets recycled every year.

NOBODY in CA csres for FO anymore. This website counts for MAYBE 10% of regular beer consumers in CA so theres also that to take into account.

Parabola, Old Rasputin and Speedway are #1

That's probably true, given that the overall BA ratings wouldn't change that much from year to year. But beyond that, what other criteria would you use for "highest rated"? Paste Magazine, aka "The Best Stouts We Could Sucker Brewers Into Sending Us For Free, By State (2024)"?

Wow, that list might be accurate but some of them are no longer available and more are extremely difficult to find. I’d love to try them all but I’m not going to work hard to chase them. Too many really good stouts easily obtained. Michigan has Expedition and KBS and the variants of those alone take up a 5th of my cellar.

Untappd would be interesting since that's a wider audience with more ratings.

Hype has carried Double Stack this far. They changed it in recent years and it's no where near as good as the OG without the 'Natural flavors'

It would be more meaningful if the criteria for the list were to include only those stouts that are widely available, at least within the state of production. But that would require a moderate amount of research once a definition for 'widely available' is determined.

And those ratings likely would include stouts that are widely available.

Weldwerks Medionoche Coconut. Sounds about right. It seems odd that only Coconut and "normal" Noche have more than 100 ratings. In the case of Coconut, it has 252, which is more than 2x of even the normal one. Only 2 of the others even have 50. I can only assume that one made it to Tavour, a huge ass festival, or some kind of out-of-state distro drop.

I'd have to disagree. FO has garnered quite a bit of attention and trade activity over the years. Perhaps the ease in obtaining it along with so many others has tarnished its gloss.

Nah, it might do the opposite.

In MA the top stout is Tree House Triple Shot on Beeradvocate.

On Untappd it's Tree House Extra Maple & Chocolate Truffle Moment of Clarity.

Beer Advocate has this ranked at 292 on their site (that's for overall). And it's only number 6 for Milk Stouts.

Untappd has 2,238 ratings for this beer as opposed to only 31 ratings on Beeradvocate. This was brewed for their sixth anniversary and it doesn't look like it's been rated since August on BA and hasn't been checked in on Untappd since September.

Still Hardywood Trickery in VA... of course it is.

It's in 4 pack cans this year (I'm assuming from Hardywood;s abandonment of glass towards cans, which I am fine with, its in 12oz containers). Pretty scarce though, I doubt it sees regular distro.

Agreed. Was kind of disappointed to see it still listed as the top Oregon stout. Was hoping Ft. George's matryoshka would have supplanted it by now. Oh well...

So I compared the list from 2023 and I see six differences. Some of these six were displaced this year due to becoming 'retired' this past year. Six changes out of fifty-one (DC is included additionally). Surely, the author could have possibly highlighted the small number of differences between 2023 & 2024 or perhaps even decided not to publish a 2024 list as it's essentially the same darn list as last year .

If they're highly rated (# wise, not rating wise) it could be law of diminishing returns, they will forever be on top until something else becomes awesome.

What’s the criteria? IL’s is Vanilla Rye? Seems incorrect, but whatever.
