The name certainly doesn’t help describe what the beer is.

My code-crackers assure me this cipher points to double-barrel, extra-old Deth with some special oak.

"A 3-plus-year-old sweet blend of double bourbon barreled Deth’s Tar is finished on our favorite single-origin, hand-fire-toasted oak from the forest of Tronçais in central France – long featured in the finest, boldest red wines in Europe and the U.S. This powerful and elegant oak is interwoven with a double shot of its charred American counterpart, and the nuance of an Extra Old malt profile makes for a matchless expression of our Imperial Oatmeal Stout."

Don't think the finishing barrel was used for wine. Rev got the barrel and then added the double barreled 3yr old Deth blend to that barrel. Might be wrong but that's my takeaway.

At one point in time, this is essentially what every trade forum post looked like.

I was lucky enough to go into the taproom on a dead night and Marty was there giving some tastes of the XOD. The bartender offered me his sample since I had been asking about future releases. If you liked the DBVSOD from last year, you'll love this. It's definitely unique among BA stouts I've had. I had planned to pass on all the 19.2s but I will be getting one of these.

It's not a barrel, it's just the oak used to make those barrels. Marty said the barrels themselves are *very* expensive but the wood can be had for something like 1/10th the cost.

Both of these are very helpful. Rereading, I can see where I went wrong. Admittedly, I had discussed this with a couple other BAs, they all said they thought it was “some type of wine thing”. Perhaps we were all lazy readers, much like many of the editors of academic journals.

Interesting. So @BeerCruncher is this kind of like the stave treatment Maker's Mark is doing on their Private Select line of bourbon?

To be fair, the third 19.2 for January does mention wine. It’s less clear but my interpretation is that the wine reference is more about a similar technique in blending than actual wine as an ingredient.

    Similar idea for sure
Any mention of winery, is in reference to a special section of barrels that Marty calls the Barleywinery. Just a play on the wine term, and it's inclusion in the beer style Barleywine.

That being said, our Firestone Walker collaboration in January does indeed use Herman Story wine barrels as the 2nd barrel, so if you don't like even a finish of wine barrel then that's the one to avoid, not either of the remaining 19.2s on the season.

This is good feedback so that we know how to get ahead of potential confusion from word choices we've made, so thanks for all the chatter.

There are relatively few breweries that engage so much. Although sometimes members are snarky, sometimes we are less than cordial in voicing our opinion on what we like/don't like, and sometimes seem to simply whine, all of really do greatly appreciate your participation here, and the fact that Rev does actually listen. Your value here can't be understated.

Lastly, thoughts a free small sample at the next release party on Nov 15th of a mystery Deep Wood vintage from our library. Everyone gets one guess and if you get it right, you get a piece of Deep Wood merch. Thoughts?

I, for one, can't wait for the Rev's take on the Oakpocalypse. The Firestone version was fantastic. And I really enjoyed what the secondary wine barrels brought to the texture and flavor. Are you guys doing anything different besides aging it longer? Or is it a completely different take?

Going to make it for my first release party (first visit to the brewery, actually) on the 15th. Can I keep sampling until I get it right? I'll buy the merch when I'm done.

I'm all in for experimenting with different woods that way. I was skeptical of that stave idea from MM. Thought it was a bit of a gimmick. Did a distillery tour and tasting 3 years ago. We were all really impressed with the ones we got to try, bought a bottle in the gift shop. Since then I've tried and bought a bunch of the MM Private Selects. They've all been above average to very good, with some being just flat out excellent.

I was a bit late in picking up my first season ticket allocation - a couple quick notes:

    1. I'm continually amazed how easy the pick up is at Rev and how friendly the staff is - every single time. Kudos to all of the staff, but especially the front line crew.

    2. The season ticket glass is immediately one of the coolest glasses I own. And I say that with a couple decades worth of "free" brewery tour pint glasses, Goose Island MBA event/anniversary glasses, and "specialty" glassware from more than a few Chicago breweries that no longer exist, to say nothing of the corresponding side-eye glances from my wife at yet another addition to the collection.

So they’re just sticking random wood into a barrel like it’s some sort of alcoholic glory hole?
