I just stumbled across the last six pack of born yesterday in the cooler at my local grocery store. this place didn't come up on lag's beer finder, so I wasn't expecting to find it here. Checked the ridiculously hard to read date printed on the bottle necks, and it says 100223, followed by a time of day, like "17:53". did they just put out last year's, or was this just a typo? anyone else see this on what is definitely this year's? if it's last year's, it's just weird they decided to put it out now, but maybe they're smarter than I think and that's their way of unloading old wet hop beer.

I can’t speak to Lagunitas but did the grocery hold onto beers from last year and just put them out now?

I have experienced year old seasonal beers being put out on a couple of occasions at some groceries near me.

Yeah, you got the 2023 version so likely got screwed by someone (whether accidentally or not). This review from last year has the same exact date as yours here. Also, this year's was packaged on 30 Sep I believe. I'd return it to the store and get my money back. Good luck if you do.

I hope it is for your sake also. It’s a shame we have to be so vigilant to check every beer for a date but there are some shady sellers out there.

Agreed. Unfortunately, it's very unlikely the year old BY was put out by accident. I mean, they just coincidentally put it out roughly around the same time as the new version release? Not very likely.

I've had this happen before as well, though not recently. It was with a year old 6 pack of SN celebration ale. My buddy and I figured the beer was old, but were curious as to how it had held up. So we bought it. In the case of the year old celebration ale, it was still pretty good. My guess is that would not have been the case with year old BY.

I didn't look closely at the one 6 pack I bought. Based on flavor alone I assume it was this year's batch.

Lagunitas sucks these days, and the excellent beer they released under that name years ago doesn't provide enough cover to protect them from the old guard good beer drinkers. But they're not worried about us, just about convincing the new generation to buy something lags branded for the Dutch overlords.

Black ink on a dark brown bottle. It really shouldn't be this difficult to read the date. Took some patience to get this pic. Especially since the printing is right at the fill line...

As @Jaycase said 9/30 for this year. I didn't have to worry about last years stock since Born Yesterday never showed up around here. Years ago, they printed the date in yellow ink on the bottle-but only on BY. All the others were black ink on dark brown bottles.

Guess we should be thankful they stopped with the Julian dating...:grimacing:

I really miss their imperial stout, hairy eyeball, undercover to name a few. Can’t remember the last time I bought a lagunitas beer.

By far the greatest loss of CA breweries from back in the day

It's like a loved one who has a traumatic brain injury. They're still there, but it's just not the same

I have been seeing more and more liquor stores with the "make your own six pack" using expired beer. Some of them were 8-10 months expired - I got burned on that once and started looking - I'd say about 25-30% of the beers are greatly expired and some are near. I always thought the "make your own" were distributor errors, broken cases, etc but now suspect they're a way of offloading stuff that couldn't sell...

They had an imperial red ale when i first started drinking that was absolutely incredible. This would be 2009/10.

yes that was a great beer! I have a check in on untapped 2014. That’s when lagunitas bombers were great. Other bombers were always so much but lagunitas put good beers in bombers and charged under $5.

A few years back a liquor store put out a huge display on the floor of stacked 6packs/12 packs that said “Nugget Nectar is back”! It was all prior year stock. Troegs found out about it (I think thru myself posting on BA forum) and they sent a rep to pull all those beers out of the store. I think in this case, it was a shady distributor sitting on old stock then delivering it to a naive store owner. It wasn’t a craft beer centric store.

Lagunitas bottles are printed on the fill line, and Yesterday has a born on date.
First year I won't be buying it.
