I have been wondering how the participation in different beer-related threads has been going in 2024 compared to 2023. Below is a summary based on the # of posts, noting that the 2024 counts are not yet final since we still have some time left in 2024. The shifting of things to the "bar" might have had an impact, but the general drop in posts could also be due to shifts in the beer world. What do you think? Share your thoughts!

    Belgian beer thread: 2023: 761 2024: 203

    Down by quite a bit

    Barleywine thread: 2023: 2,368 2024: 1,150

    Down by quite a bit

    Stout thread: 2023: 3,508 2024: 3,156

Probably on track to be the same

    Bock thread: 2023: 608 2024: 218

    Down quite a bit

    Smoked beer thread: 2023: 257 2024: 191

    Will probably end up down

Porter thread: NA since 2023 was started in July

    Haul thread: 2023: 2,759 2024: 1,956

Down quite a bit - are people buying less?

    Cellar reviews thread: 2023: 294 2024: 307 (only increase)

Up! Are people clearing their cellars???

Add one more to the cellar thread as I just posted my thoughts on an old Hair of the Dog beer! I will definitely be contributing to that thread more over the coming months.

To me, those aren't really essential threads. I like the WBAYDN, NBW, and the specific tastings threads that happen every once in a while. If I happen to remember to post in one of the above mentioned threads then cool, but no big deal.

To springboard off what @champ103 posted above it would be worthwhile knowing the level of participation for NBW between the years.

    Cheers!

There also seems to be less participation in, and fewer of, general interest threads. There used to be multiple new main page threads a day, now the same handful seem to stick around for days or weeks at a time.

I have also been wondering about this. I might go and try to extract this info, but I know someone (@snaotheus !!!) who might be able to do this pretty quickly!

Oh, that's an interesting thought, but requires quite a bit of work. Doable, just not easy.

Does this reflect broader trends? How’s Hard Seltzer Advocate doing?

I had a new Bock to try and had to hunt for awhile to find it buried a couple weeks ago in all the daily WBYDN threads. And I thought I should post some of my tastings in these style-specific threads to keep them floating up to the top once in a while. I would encourage others who like to see some new faces to do the same.:pointing_left:

Unfortunately these threads got killed when they were moved out of beer talk and into the bar. I have the bar saved in my watch list so that these specific threads still appear on my homepage under the “Join the Discussion” banner.

I understand that some people were unhappy with perceived overload of style specific threads on the homepage, thus leading to the creation of the bar. However, many users do not have the bar forum watched and therefore are having a hard time finding bar threads other than WBAYDN? and NBW. Not only does this drive current user engagement down, but I believe it to almost completely eliminate the possibility of a new user discovering the style specific threads.

Anyway, that’s just my two cents. :beers:

If I understand @mactrail and @LeinenkugelDrinker correctly its too bad that the NBW and WBAYDN old threads couldn't be "archived" after the style specific threads.

That way most of the style specific threads would be on page 1 and at worse page 2.

To play off this idea, what could work is moving threads back into Beer Talk and then repurpose The Bar as a place to archive WBAYDN, NBW, annual style threads, and the like once they're locked. Could be a good compromise.

With the upgrade, would there be a way to show/hide closed/locked threads? Perhaps the user could choose his/her preference (or the choice could persist across sessions).

No, hiding locked threads isn't a feature.

This might lead to too many posts at the top of the page, but could we simply use the sticky feature to keep the annual tasting threads up top on The Bar so that they aren't buried in pages of WBAYDN and NBW? This would keep them visible without impacting the home page and opening that discussion again.

Unless someone else is also curious about the activity comparison in the NA beer threads and beats me to it, I'll count the number of posts in them when I get a little more time this morning. It might show whether interest is growing in that 'style' or not.

362 posts last year and only 208 so far this year, so also a drop.

I purposefully started to ignore the Haul thread this year because seeing hauls would have my dumbass go out and buy a shitload of beer i didn't need. Best decision i have ever made.
I also post way less because my phone is almost out of space. I don't know how much less i post but it's at least 40% .
I'm drinking less, browsing brewery websites less and not talking as much to old drinking buddies as much because I'd rather do other stuff like stay home with my cat as opposed to spending over 100 dollars+ hitting 3 breweries.

Thanks for your totals. I just finished my calculations before seeing your post, and I came up with the same numbers. However, I took it a step further and looked at the number of posters in each year to satisfy my curiosity to see if there is growth in the interest in NA beers.

    2023 = 67 different members who posted
    2024 = 39 different members who posted

Of the 39 who posted in 2024, 20 of them also posted in 2023. If you subtract that 20 from the 39, that means there were 19 new names who might be showing a new interest in NA beers, although other reasons can exist for this.

Unfortunately if you subtract the 39 who posted in 2024 from the 67 in 2023 that could mean 28 people lost interest in drinking NA beers (or other reasons for the difference).

That's just my numbers study to satisfy my curiosity. Now it's time for a real beer and some football.
