I'm joining @DIM again tonight with Five Rings from Container Brewing in Vancouver, Canada. A barleywine aged in bourbon soaked toasted French oak. Comes in at 10.7% ABV. I love that they put the ingredients on the can: water, malt, hops, and yeast. What a delight to see something brewed without any additions.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a nice transparent reddish brown with a solid inch of head. The nose is salted toffee, prunes, raisins, and some boozy notes. Some spice comes through as well.

The taste toffee, stone fruit, oak spice, a touch of leather, and a hint of cinnamon. The bittering hops are noticeable. Mostly a pine note. Not really getting much in the way of bourbon. My sense is that they added bourbon-soaked oak chips and didn't actually put this in a barrel. Not sure though. Although they describe this as an English barleywine, I feel like it's more of a crossover between the American and English styles. More hoppy that a traditional English BW but also maltier than an American style. Very enjoyable overall.

y'all didnt think I would just give barleywine advice to Vermont and not actually share a beer too, did'ya?
This is Barreled SOuls in Saco Maine and their Blonde on Blonde barleywine, aged for 11 months and 26 days in Barton Bourbon barrels. Beer registers 13.9% ABV.

    onto my review:

I am sampling a 2021 vintage 500 ml bottle of this beer and pouring into my snifter. Picked up at the brewery in 2022 and has been in my cellar since. Seemed a good night to empty this bottle.
The beer pours a copper color with some chestnut color too. A fairly creamy khaki colored, dense head of 1 cm foams up and fades to a thin edge ring. Very limited lacing when I swirl or take a sip from the glass.
Aroma is sweet malts with toffee and brown sugar mixing with a bit of sweet bourbon. Not really boozy or any hop character on the nose. Smells like a bourbon barrel aged barleywine.
First sip reveals a medium to thicker body with slight sticky texture and very fine and tingly carbonation. Definitely a little coating on my lips after each sip.
Flavor is similar to the nose with toffee and brown sugar and some plum flavor mixing with sweet bourbon. Here I do get a little peppery spice from booze, but not any warming. No hop character anywhere either.
This is a well made barrel aged barleywine that has the pieces I like and still isnt overly sweet or candylike. Only improvement would be slightly bigger feel on the beer. But Im enjoying this one from my favorite big beer brewer in Maine!
    4.33 in the BA DB

My last can of DB VSOJ and perhaps good riddance as this is my entire pour after a monstrous foam storm upon opening. Boy, does it taste great though. Thick, almost syrupy with a tremendous barrel presented. Damn tough to beat Rev in the BA BW game. Cheers!!

Had this one a few days ago:

Tynt Meadow (brewed by some abbey I guess). A hair light on abv but definitely fits the flavor profile. Fantastic and I wish I could find these nearby.

Gratitude from East End. This can is from January of 2022. This has aged beautifully. Just a wonderful balance of hops and that classic barleywine toffee flavor.

NBW cross-post. New Glarus Brewing Barley Wine 24. 9.8% ABV. It is different than what I expected, but I do like this barleywine. I look forward to experiencing it again at the end of a session, during colder weather, and with some age on it.

Time to open one of these from @GreenBayBA thanks again!

First thing that come to mind is apple pie. Warmed apples, brown sugar, very light spice, biscuity crust, it's all here and I like it a lot. Some candied orange peel at the finish. Unique and I'm diggin it, thanks Micah!

I agree! Hopefully you are able to pair at least one can with a Philadelphia Eagles game. That would be great to see!

Opening another from @Beersnake thanks as always Tim! I wonder how many barleywines you've sent me, more than 40 probably? Bruno from Machine House tonight, a still, barrel aged Barleywine.

First pour at cellar temp, I'll have the second pour later at fridge temp. Oh yeah, this is exactly what I'm in the mood for. It's lightly sweet overall with lots of layers and depth. Plenty of figs and raisins with some brown sugar dusted roasted pecans, leather, warming brown liquor, and faint molasses. So glad I got to try this, thanks Tim!

I can only imagine how many barleywines have been exchanged between us. It has to be at least 40 each. Really glad you enjoyed this one, Dan!! I'm curious if you think it's better or worse at fridge temp later. Interesting way of doing it! Cheers!

Not better or worse but the second glass is a bit different. More sediment in this pour, so it might not all be due to temperature difference. I get a little more brown sugar, less fruit, and a tobacco note that I don't recall tasting earlier. Thanks again for this one Tim, it is absolutely stellar. If it was a local option I'd buy a whole bunch.

Enjoying a “Day Drinks” Barleywine aged in Rum and Bourbon barrels and infused with coconut and pineapple adjuncts. Does not resemble a Barleywine a whole lot but I like it much better today than at the release party in April, a well blended beer cocktail.
    Cheers!
