We made a lasagna for dinner - kinda rushed it so it didn't really set up well but it tasted great.

    Tonight's volunteer:

Waitaki River Pils - a "pilsner" from Long Live Beerworks. Here this is classified as a Bohemian/Czech pilsner. I'm not entirely convinced it's a pilsner but that's what they and we call it. All I can find on line says it is a New Zealand pilsner using New Zealand hops and using torrified wheat..confused am I...

Pours a slightly cloudy pale yellow with a generous frothy white head that falls to a patchy cap with significant cling.

To me, the aroma is saying pale ale or even IPA. It's citrusy grapefruit, slightly resinous, some biscuity malt. No indication of a pilsner hop profile to this here nose.

The taste follows suite with it being hop forward, grapefruit, a tiny hint of resin, a touch of dank. Malts are in the background, very slightly sweet and breadier than the smell suggested. Mild bitterness on the swallow. Eventually there is a little peppery taste way after the fact.

Feel is light, very slightly drying, well carbonated.

In the words of Hedley Lamarr...give me a harumpf... I don't think this is a pilsner - a new-world hoppy stab at a pilsner, maybe if a squint a little. To me it reads IPA. I'm almost wondering if it's a mislabeled can. Not getting Noble-type hops in the aroma or taste and it doesn't say lager to me either. The only thing remotely saying pils to me is the malts - that seems a weak argument - and yeah maybe a wee bit of spice comes in way late. But here's the thing - it's really a very good tasting beer. Be easier if the whole thing was a train wreck! Maybe I won't review it.

    Good evening NBW
Finally stumbled across a single of KBS Double Oaked. Imgur & BA aren't playing well right now so I don't know if I'll get a picture posted.

12oz bottled 09.24.24 poured into a snifter at fridge temp 12% ABV. The beer pours impenetrable black with medium brown colored head. The head recedes to a thin ring and single layer of bubbles. Leaves a virtual wall of lacing. The aroma is moderate in strength featuring bourbon barrel, dark chocolate fudge and coffee. The taste is bittersweet roasted malt with big oak up front followed by coffee, chocolate fudge and finishing in an earthy, ashy moderate bitterness. The feel is medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. The 12% is there, but restrained. Overall, very good stout.

If you are into World War II history and you are willing to visit I strongly suggest you allocate a lot of time to visit the museum. It is large with multiple locations.

    Cheers!

    Larry,

    From Untappd:

“New Zealand-style Pilsner dry-hopped w/ a blend of New Zealand-grown hops. Pours hazy with the addition of torrefied wheat for a softened mouthfeel.”

    https://untappd.com/b/long-live-beerworks-waitaki-river-pils/5899599

I am personally not a fan of breweries ‘creating’ a bunch of new Pilsner styles based upon where hops are grown or other ingredients are from but…

Anyhow this beer is not a Bohemian Pilsner.

    Cheers!

I found the same info other places as well. I really don't think it's a pilsner at all. Good beer, though!

I'll post one soon. First I'm going to review my 1000th beer (Yeah, for some of you that's small potatoes, but it took me a while) Back in a few.

    Another banger from @snaotheus

Cloudburst/Green Cheek Collab West Coast IPA is Dead, 7.2% ABV; 4.15 overall

Pours a chill-hazed gold with two fingers of eggshell colored head. Below average head retention & lacing

S: A little bready, plenty catty, some pineapple when warmed up & lemons

T: Follows the nose, pretty piney, a little bit of lemon & mint as well up front, fairly dry. Some lime notes, pomelo, bready dryness as pine needles as this beer warms up. Finishes with pineyness, tangerine & some cakey notes

MF: Medium body, moderate carbonation, lovely balance

Drinks great, nice take on style with some West Coast Influence

Hello y'all. (Funny how spell check corrected my spelling on a colloquialism)
Didn't realize until today how close I was, but this will be my 1,000 beer rating (not review though, that will come later)
Wanted something auspicious, something large, something worthy to mark the milestone. Kane Double Double Cask Barleywine fit that bill. Received in a NBW BIF hit a year or two ago (this one was canned in '22)
Poured cola brown and was capped with a 1 cm light brown head which left no lacing.
The taste was toffee and leather and figs and vanilla, sugar but not sweet. A little oak flavor rounds it out and the bourbon is more felt than tasted.
The feel is actually much lighter than expected, but that just made it easier to quaff. The taste was so appealing I wanted to gulp it but knowing the ABV I took my time. That and the game I was playing with friends online (Blade Runner) required focus.
OA, I may just have to make it a habit of drinking a barleywine on Sundays. Mostly I drink stouts, so once a week something different is good. Cheers all, this is my one and done for the day. Night. whatever.
Now to upload a pic of a tree...

You know, that's a good observation. I try to review the ones I like (or if it's truly bad I review as a warning). As my sense of smell is very, very limited, I only continue for those in a similar situation - if one reads my reviews for the last few years there is almost no mention of aroma. I have to assume I'm not the only one in that situation.
cheers, and here's to a thousand more!

Admiral Nimitz was born in Fredericksburg. That is my guess for that location being picked.

    Cheers!

This one is from @muchloveforhops3 Some Idaho Awesomeness via Montana

Bombastic Brewing Pandemonium ( Peanut Butter/Fluffernutter ) Imperial Stout, 10.5% ABV; 4.1 overall

Pours a chestnut tinged mahogany with a pinky of fast falling mocha colored head. Zero head retention & lacing

S: Cocoa, peanut butter in spades

T: Follows the nose, a touch of vanilla, seems like a peanut butter cookie, a little dry. Marshmallow become more prominent as this beer warms up, along with cocoa & peanut butter, fairly dry. Finishes a little dry, peanut hulls, sweet cookie notes & cocoa

MF: Medium body, vigorous carbonation, slightly over carbonated, the only real detractor, warming

Pretty good take on the style; nothing seems forced or artificial; drinks easy for the heft

    Greetings, fellow NBWers,

Been a bit since I have successfully carved out some time to contribute here. Since changing jobs and moving this past summer, I've been a little out of whack.

The weekend has been mostly fall-like, with a little winter thrown in lat night. Gray and blustery turned to snow around 7pm. Now living at roughly the highest elevation in this mostly valley-nestled city, this translated into about a half inch of snow on the ground when I parked the car in my garage, which I had just cleared of boxes enough to do earlier yesterday! Sometime overnight the snow switched to rain, so when I awoke the snow was but a memory.
Still raining, in the mid-40s as of now.

Yesterday, I had a rather unusual beer for these parts - an "Ordinary Bitter":

It doesn't say so on the label, but this must have been conditioned in the can. The sheer uglyness of the pour non-plussed me until I realized they'd conditioned it to drink like a cask beer. They were very successful at that. Drinks just like I'd expect such a beer to if pulled from a beer engine in the UK. Good stuff!
