Should I buy Dogfish Head 120 from an unknown store?

    Hey guys;
    It doesn't look like Dogfish Head brewed any DF 120 this year. I haven't seen it in my local Total Wine since about this time last year when I bought my last 4-pack of the barrel aged variety.
    I happened to be shopping on DoorDash for beer. Normally I would drive to my beer store and pick up what I want. But I am a bit off the track now, so driving is not an option, thus DD.

    I found a place near me (about 6 miles) who claims to have Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA.
    On the DD linked page, the image is of a 4-pack of DF 120 barrel aged and the price is listed at $15.85.
    I immediately realized that DD had the image wrong. For $15.85 I would be getting one bottle of DF 120.
    I called the store to confirm that they do indeed have some of this 'nectar of the gods' in stock. I had a bit of a language problem, but when a man came on, he spoke better English and confirmed that they do indeed have the DF 120 in stock, and that I was correct to assume that the $15.85 price DD was going to charge me was for one bottle. He told me that the 4-pack goes for $40.

    So I'm asking myself whether I should take a drive over to this store tomorrow morning and buy the 4-pack of DF 120 or hold off.
    First, how do I know this small-business owner didn't storey the DF 120 next to the furnace for the past 2 years?
    Do you think I should go for it, or save my $$ and the trip?

    Fwiw there is an approved label for 120 Minute IPA from earlier in the month. It would seem DFH will likely release it again in the coming months. The beer at the store seems to be the Utopias Barrel Aged 120 Minute IPA released in 2023. Different beers so why not both? :laughing:

    Honestly, why not? It's 6 miles. Might as well go check it out. If it isn't the one you want, no big deal. DFH 120 isn't a particularly rare beer. You can probably find dozens of traders in your area with bottles going back a decade or more if you really want.

    I’ve never had barrel aged 120min but the regular 120min will survive a nuclear bomb so a couple years by the furnace should be just fine.

    Seriously 120min will age well for a long long time. So I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it if you’re fine with the price point.

    Agreed, the Utopias Barrel aged 120 IPA I would estimate would age well for 10+ years so this isn't really a risk.

    I mean, w/o sounding condescending, I agree. Assuming money doesn't play a factor w/ going a mere 6 mi, the least you could do is go look. If it's a no-go, they might have something else you want. You never know.

    Also, how did I never get around to trying Utopias BA 120min; literally two of my favorite beers and I didn’t try the widely available pseudo-combo.

    Maybe before you go just take a marker and draw some marks that look like stitches along where your kidneys are.

    Barleywine is what an Imperial IPA like 120 minute dreams of becoming. You'll be fine.

    A barrel aged super strong IPA with bright modern hops just sounds wrong to me, I am curious to hear what you think after trying it.

    The Utopias BA version is worth it IMO. Buy as many as you can.
