Can BA have an app? What seems to be the hurdles?

In a nutshell: a lot of time and resources.

Internally, I'm the only person dedicated to BeerAdvocate on a day-to-day basis. App development would require dedicated people with appropriate salaries or outsourcing development to a third party, which would easily cost six figures for what I'd like to see in a native BeerAdvocate app.

I like BA just the way it is. I'm also an old white dude, so that tracks.

This site is pretty well optimized for small devices, so I have no complaints or desires for an app. However, there are features that could make for a great app (and I even like some of them), but most of them are pie in the sky for now. You can read up on some of the suggestions in previous threads for what someday may become a reality. https://www.beeradvocate.com/commun...dvocate+app&o=date&c[title_only]=1&c[node]=18

Didn’t anyone hear, LPs are back, they’re starting to make cassettes again, Facebook is or has become passé for young kids in favor of Snapchat or Instagram (but how the hell would I know)…all I can say is don’t change a damn thing about BA for the rest of my lifetime and I’ll be just fine…! Cheers!

This makes me think of the magazine, which was my initial point of entry here. I wonder if newer members even associate BA with anything that once existed in print?

Or our beer fests. We hosted over 70 from 2003-2020, ranging from around 1,000 to 15,000 attendees per fest with help from thousands of volunteers over the years.

And the programs from those fests. I still have about 10+ years of programs from those fests, as well as shirts from the BA Craft, the Extreme and my favorite, the Belgian. If memory serves me - BA was one of the only places where you could have a fest entirely dedicated to wild or saisons one night (long before fruited kettle sours existed), and then all the rest of the Belgians the next. If it wasn’t for BA, my appreciation for all the different types of beers that exist wouldn’t be what it is today…! Thanks Todd!

I don't really see the need for an app as the site already is user friendly as it is.
The only improvement would be a way to make it easier to upload pics instead of using a 3rd party site/app.

The stuff of legends. I never made it to a fest—closest was the planned Bay Area gathering that ended up not happening.

Site works great on mobile. I do miss the ‘near me” map feature!

Going to close this one down with a note that the forum upgrade that I'm working on will allow users to install a progressive web app (PWA) on their devices that'll offer some extended features. While it's not the native app experience that people might be looking for, it'll be a huge leap forward from where we are today.

    More to follow...
