I’ll be visiting Atlanta (no car) next week and would like to find places with barrel aged stouts or barleywines on tap or have bottles to go. Suggestions?? Also, is there general agreement about the best bottle shop in the city? Thanks!
If that's what you're after, I'd uber out to Brick Store Pub and you'll find all the incredible draft and cellar offerings you could ever want.
Definitely one of the best beer bars in America. Also walking distance to Inner Voice which makes solid beers and has very good pizza if you decide not to eat at Brick Store.
Porter Beer bar is another great establishment. Little cottage brewing often has a BA offering on tap or for onsite consumption from a bottle. If you want world class lagers relatively close to downtown I’d hit Halfway Crooks. Enjoy.
Yeah, that was an excellent suggestion. If you're up for it, try the cask ale there. They are Cask Marque certified and serve it the way it's supposed to be.
Monday Night West Midtown has one barleywine on tap. They have a good barrel aging program. If you go there, be sure to try the barrel aged Drafty Kilt. Let me noodle on it a little more.
@Beersnake if I was going to visit one brewery inside I-285 (inside the perimeter) while in Atlanta, it would be Halfway Crooks. The brewer is from Belgium and knows his stuff. They have a BBA stout on tap now. Usually a good selection of beer-to-go. Very cool atmosphere there. https://halfwaycrooks.beer/menus/ https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/57873/ A brewery that get rave reviews from locals but I have not been there yet is Little Cottage Brewery. It's small and only a couple.years old but has BBA beers and bottles to go. https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/61023/
I just checked and I've tried barrel-aged Drafty Kilt! Had it a couple of years ago out of the can. Very good stuff. Their current tap list looks insane. This is high on my list now!
@Beersnake - Yeah, MNB has some good stuff going on. I just got on my email they are releasing this new BBA Barleywine today.
Just visited Monday Night Brewing - Garage, and it was great. Had a glass of The Shadow King (Maple Cognac), and it was fantastic. Lots of barrel on that. Grabbed a 7 Deadly Stouts to go. Might go back for the barleywine tomorrow or Monday. Also stopped at Hop City, which had a great selection of beers. Got a couple of beers from Bold Monk (Brother Ivan and The Way). Might also try to get to one of the other recommended pubs before I leave! Thanks again for the recommendations!
Awesome! Those are two great beers from Bold Monk too. The Way is outstanding. One of my favorites from them. Great choices!
I also will be going to ATL soon. Got Brick Store, The Porter, Halfway Crooks, Scoflaw, and Firemaker on my list from friend recommendations. What brewery do I not have that you would highly recommend? Only got a day or two in ATL so have to choose wisely TIA and cheers!
If you're there for such a short period, I'd probably condense my list. Scoflaw is somewhere I'd personally skip. Firemaker is good from what I hear (never been), but it's pretty far from everywhere else. I'd stick with your other recs (Halfway Crooks and Brick Store being must do's) and maybe add in Inner Voice since it's walking distance from Brick Store and has some great pizza in house. Have a blast!
Wrecking Bar Brewpub is within walking distance of the Porter and worth a stop. Agree on hitting Inner Voice while near Brick Store. If you have extra time in Decatur, Three Taverns and Little Cottage are close too.
