    Hey, everyone!

Another quick update as I plow through some housekeeping items before the end of the year...

    Brewery Stats:

Updated the core Beer Stats for places tagged as a brewery.
    • Average (across all beers), (number of) Beers, and (number of beer) Ratings now include all beers vs. just those that aren't retired. These stats should be fully updated across all active places within the next 24 hours.
    • Created a new stat for each of above that only considers beers that've been rated within the last two years and aren't retired (the theme of this update).
    • Created new stats for number of New, Inactive, and Retired beers, which are now displayed under Beer Stats. I was generating these in realtime with each page load, but now they're stored and updated as needed for improved efficiency.
This will give us some all-time and recent stats to play with, the latter of which I plan on applying across multiple updates in the new year.

    Beer Lists & Tabs:

The Active tab now only shows active beers (as previous defined). This is to help reduce the number of beers loaded within this default view and to keep things bit more relevant for most users. Additionally, it's now the only tab that's accessible if you're not logged in.

Example: @Shreeve recently mentioned that Cloudwater's active beer list had lots of retired beers on it, but tagging a beer as retired is reserved for when we have confirmation that a brewery has discontinued / no longer brews it. It's also a lot of work for someone to check and report hundreds of beers, so I went for a passive solution which reduced Cloudwater’s beer list from 505 to 148 beers under the Active tab.

Inactive beers now have their own tab, but can also be found under the All tab, New tab (if applicable), or while searching. If rated, they'll move under Active. If retired, they'll move under Retired.

Tabs have been reordered: All, Active, New, Inactive, and Retired.

    Beer Status:

Slight adjustment to the status on beer pages and the corresponding color. Currently only applied on the status listed on the beer page and last activity date when viewing the All tab, but I hope to apply it elsewhere over time. Also helps to normalize what's considered an "active" beer.
    • Active (green) = a beer that's been rated within the last two years and isn't retired
    • Inactive (muted) = not retired, but not rated within the last two years
    • Retired (red) = officially discontinued by the brewery / no longer brewed
As a reminder, only active beers are ranked (no change here) and please submit a report if you know for sure that a a beer has been retired.

Keeps things simple, clean, and more descriptive.

    Kippis! :beers::heavymetal:

Sounds good and will help with former RateBeerians as they upload their old ratings. Maybe something similiar for 'Places' if they want to add those? For instance, a place they visited 8 years and may/maynot still be in business.

Todd, thanks for all you do.

I hope I haven't missed something that's on the site already, but I think not.

Now that we have a cleaner dataset for places and their beers, how about a listing of, say, the top 100 breweries ranked by their average place and beer stats? It would be under "Places" while still retaining the Your Places, Add Place and Directory links. Keep it simple - make it worldwide-- no national or state filters.

The home page "Top Rated" could also contain those listings, but it's pretty long as it is and only deals with beers

Updates: (added most of this to my original post too)
    • Created new stats for number of New, Inactive, and Retired beers, which are now displayed under Beer Stats. I was generating these in realtime with each page load, but now they're stored and updated as needed for improved efficiency.
    • Active tab is now the only tab that's accessible if you're not logged in.
    • Inactive beers now have their own tab, to avoid confusion.
    • Tabs have been reordered: All, Active, New, Inactive, and Retired.
    • Fixed a bug when calculating the number of all beers on the page. Now uses the stored total. Thanks to @brentk56 for bringing this to my attention.
    • Fixed the anchor link when viewing lists. Now drops you down the page to a better and more consistent view to make toggling between beers, place reviews, and tabs a better experience.
    Enjoy!

Love the "inactive" idea. Brilliant and not surprising that you came up with it ... BA.com is always ahead of the game.:clap::clap:

I won't say never, but I don't see it happening any time soon as it would require ranking these beers separately and significant updates to support this.

Hey @Todd, I just added a new beer and found a format change in which it asks me to go to the brewery’s page and search if the beer already exists there rather than having a list of all the brewery’s beers right there below as it used to.

This seems like a minor change but:

    (1) it took me several extra minutes to click through and sort through the hundreds of beers the brewery has and the possible names people might have listed it under. Having the faster-scrolling list right there on the add page was quite a bit faster.

    (2) I’m getting old and addle brained, and by the time I had assured myself I was adding a new beer and went back to the add page to add it, I had forgotten the formatting folks used for variants of this particular beer, and had to go back again and look it up, putting additional precious minutes between me and my beverage.

If this is the way it has to be, so be it, but if it’s just as easy to switch back to the old system, it was easier to add a beer the old way. Just some user data for you. :beers:

Just throwing this out there, I believe it would be better, in my humble opinion, to have the default set to all beers instead of active beers when you go to a brewery page.

I know everyone is a critic, hope this comes across as a suggestion and not a complaint.

It was fine ten years ago when the lists were manageable, but loading hundreds/thousands of beers on the add a beer form has simply become too much, so it now defaults to a prompt with link to view all beers (one click).

Same issue with the default view on brewery pages. Even with the update, the active list of beers is still in the hundreds for many breweries. By making all beers the default, it would basically reverse much of the goal of this update (me trying to balance resources and relevance), but it's just one click away for those who need it.

It might be a compromise of convenience for some, but I hope you get the reason why.
