Update: I've reverted the start/end time back to midnight Pacific Time Zone. We can pick up the discussion and other ideas soon. Thanks for the feedback, everyone! Here, in the WBAYDN threads (I read all of it), and the mod chat. :beers:

    ###

    New year, new start time!

Henceforth, What beer are you drinking now?, New Beer Weekend, and the like, can officially start at midnight (00:00:00) BA Time (same as UTC).

    Time zone conversion examples:

    • 16:00 UTC-5 (4pm) in Los Angeles
    • 17:00 UTC-7 (5pm) in Denver
    • 19:00 UTC-5 (7pm) in New York
    • 00:00 UTC+0 (midnight) in London (BA Time)
    • 02:00 UTC+2 (2am) in Helsinki
    • 09:00 UTC+9 (9am) in Tokyo
    • 11:00 UTC+11 (11am) in Sydney
The current BA Time is displayed at the very bottom of the site, but you'll need to refresh the page to update it.

    Why the change?

    • Starting the new WBAYDN at midnight PT made for a very slow start, due to most of our users living in the US and many of them in bed when 08:00 BA Time rolls around. Hell, the other day the thread didn't start until 15:32 BA Time! That's 7.5 hours later than normal, but @Shanex saved us.
    • Could encourage more users outside of the US to join as the thread will be more active for them or at least exist.
    • Gives a wider pool of users a chance to start the thread, and there are more mods around the lock the old thread.
    • The new start time should kick things off with a bit more of an old-school Late Night BeerAdvocate (LNBA) vibe. If you know, you know.
I've been wanting to make this change for ages. Looking forward to seeing how it takes.

    Kipps! :beers::heavymetal:

In lack of a better word, I think we’ve reached a consensus.
I love our American overwhelming community but would also love to see more users from Europe or anywhere else really.
And I know the “old guard” used to the former LNBA thread and crew would be happy with the accommodating time. Cheers.

Now we really need to ditch daylight saving time (or make it permanent and quit switching).

The new evening start time is perfect for NBW, it’ll definitely garner a lot more responses. However, I thought the midnight start for WBAYDN? made total sense. New day, new thread. With the new format, users are going to be engaging in conversation and posting pics in one thread only to have it shut down on them in the middle of the day. Does the very occasional slow start to WBAYDN? really matter? Why mess with a good system?

Anyway, just my two cents, appreciate all the effort you put into this great site. :beers:

I miss the good ole days when WBAYDN started whenever the first BA cracked a breakfast beer with their eggs and bacon.

NBW has been like this for a while, great to see the logic applied to all the pertinent threads!
    Thanks @Todd

Will New Beer Weekend / New Beer Sunday threads continue to remain open through Sunday 11:59 PM PST/PDT (or through Monday for special holiday editions)?

Or will both NBW/NBS and WBAYDN threads close at 3:59 PM PST/ 4:59 PM PDT?

Update: the start/end time has been reverted to midnight Pacific Time Zone.

As always, we'll be flexible with NBW with holidays, but to get technical, as we're using UTC, it should end at when the International Date Line (IDL) flips. UTC-12 is the more dominate time on the IDL, so I'd use that. So NBW should end at BA Time + 12 hours, which would be 04:00 in Los Angeles on Monday (14:00 here in Helsinki).

This seems like it could be BA’s biggest change in my time here.

IMO, next to reviews, WBAYDN is the most important part of the site. The old system was definitely biased towards East Coast US users (which as an East Coast US user, I totally supported). The new system is clearly biased towards the Brits.

Beyond the reasons cited above, is that a business decision (trying to cut into the European market, especially post-RateBeer), possibly carving out a different user base niche from other NextGlass properties? Is it for the convenience of Europe-based staff and mods? A subtle eff you to the rise in nationalism in the U.S. and around the world? Or is something else behind it?

For Americans who often think they’re the center of the universe, it’s gonna be an adjustment starting a session in one day’s thread and having to switch to another day’s thread the same afternoon. Hope it doesn’t piss off long-time WBAYDN users. (For me, it probably won’t — unless you start renumbering the thread at Day 1.)

Also, to our European friends, occasionally when there is good early participation in WBAYDN (as there should be often now with the most active user base starting their day at 3pm), a call goes out for the thread to hit a certain number of pages. Y’all are now anchorman in that situation. Just a little bit of American beer drinking culture leftover from the pre-craft days. :beers:

We used BA Time (UTC) in the past, but it was bias towards the West Coast (thread was previously locked at midnight PT) and the East Coast before that. I lived in California, Colorado, Massachusetts before moving to Finland, so the times kind of moved with me.
Nah, it's simply something that I've been wanting to apply for a while now. I've even discussed it with the mod team a few times, but I never got around to it.

But sure, I do think this will benefit users outside of the US (as previously mentioned), which is a user base that I'd love to grow here on BA. And my perspective on the world in general has changed significantly since moving to Finland. Locking things at midnight PT seems arbitrary now.
Agreed! As I posted in the mod chat this morning, all of this is a good reminder that it's a big world out there beyond your time zone.

FWIW that's why I'm 100% behind the change.

I've seen lots of complaints that frankly can be solved by just carrying over the conversation from one WBAYDN to the next WBAYDN at 6 p.m. Texas time. Sure, it's not as convenient, but neither is bar-hopping.

Is there a firm reason the previous thread must be closed at exactly 0:00?

Can we encourage new beers to be posted in the new thread, started at 0:00, but allow a “Last Call” for conversations to continue in the previous thread until say 0:30 - 1:00 BA Time, before it is locked?

Would resolve the primary complaint noted yesterday, in terms of the sharp break in continuity of discussions.

Previous to last year, there was flexibility in the closure of the previous thread, leaving it open well beyond 0:00, which allowed folks to respond in the early morning to posts from the previous evening, while the new thread was underway.

Yes, to avoid confusion and focus on the new thread. Having two threads rolling for an hour or so isn't going to work.
I have faith that everyone will eventually adjust.
More like a mod (or probably me) forgot to lock the thread vs. flexibility.
