This is DEFINITELY better once it warms a bit. Good with mild summer sausage and light campfire aroma and early summer sausage in the flavor. Early sweetness mellows out to allow the smoke and toasted malt to come forward. Some acidity, some leather. Long finish starts bold and gradually fades. Enjoying with wild boar and Fromage Des Jacques cheese. And any excuse for Rachmaninov.

Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen, my Eleventh Day of Christmas beer. Whenever I see a Rauchbier I'll usually buy it in the hope that it's going to deliver rich, eye-watering notes of wood smoke. This one does, in spades.

Cross-post from the cellar reviews thread:

    2013 Alaskan Smoked Porter
    [IMG]

I had one of these about 11 months ago here: https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/cellar-reviews-2024.675664/page-4#post-7927446 (see, I got a new fridge!)

Pulled another out of the cellar today, man, it is tasty!
    Appearance: Black, small dense head.
Smell: Black olives, ashes, roasted malts, distant smoke.
Taste: Dark chocolate, roasted malts, a bit of caramel, then a very long and lasting finish of smoke.

Maybe this bottle had a better life than the one from last year, it is outstanding! It's a different beer than when fresh, but I would not be able to tell this was 11-12 years old.

Many moons ago... back when Don Younger was still around... the Horsebrass here in pdx would always tap 4 or 5 different vintages every year around the holidays. I was always amazed by how age worthy this beer was. Didn't ever get to try an 11/12 year old version, but I remember being dumbfounded by how good 8 and 9 year old versions were. Just an altogether great beer!

I wish this came in 12oz 6 or 12 packs, I'd drink way too much of this!

The base beer has a bit toouch of a hoppy base. With the smoke it gives an acrid aftertaste. I let it warm, and the sweetness of the malts help it out about %75. If you got it local, give it a try. I wouldn't trade for it or anything tho.

    Crosspost from NBW:

    Surly Oakenator Smokenator
    [IMG]
    Appearance: Clear amber, good head.

    Smell: Smoky, not too strong.

Taste: Some mild sweetness, then a smokiness comes through that is helped along by a coating mouthfeel. Hammy oak and mild sweetness.

Overall: I jump at almost any smoked beer so when Surly posted a smoked doppelbock, I got a crowler at the first available opportunity. It's not overpowering smoke, and it's nicely balanced, not too strong or too sweet. Tasty!

What do you know...another Schlenkerla posted here. This one might be my favorite from the brewery, and the rauchbier style as a whole. I'm sure I posted this in one of the previous years threads, and has been posted here multiple times from others as well. A good one for a rainy/gloomy/cold afternoon here (yeah it does get cold on occasion around here ha). With some ECM jazz spinning.

Love the smoke character, love the malty character, love the balance between everything.

    Dark Accent - Aurora Brewing

IMPERIAL DARK LAGER aka Schwarzbier | 7%
A smokey imperial dark lager with local maple syrup.

A very mild smoke, the maple is more apparent. Aroma has bacon and maple over the light roasted malt. Enjoyed canal side at Aurora’s taproom SE of Rochester. Very tasty. Looking forward to revisit in warmer weather.
