Indeed! It’s outstanding, and available at Wegmans (at least at the Collegeville location)!

I decided to cut way back on beer spending for the next month or so. What does Tree House do? Release 3 epic barrel aged barleywines at the same time. They hadn’t released one in months!!!

Svarog from Threshold Brewing and Blending in Portland. This is a Polish barleywine aged in whiskey barrels for 12 months. 13% ABV. Thanks to @snaotheus for helping me get this one!

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a nice dark brown without any head. The nose is wonderful. Rich toffee. Mild sweetness. Wow - this is just so wonderful to smell. Some vanilla and bourbon are coming through, but the toffee dominates. Figs and apricots are also there.

The taste is a bit of a departure from the nose. The toffee is definitely there, but now a bitterness comes through. Pine, mint, oak, vanilla, leather, licorice, figs, plums, caramelized sugar, and grapes.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and the aftertaste is a mix of oak, pine bitterness, and burnt toffee. Overall, I'm really happy with this one.

Tried the 2023 vintage of this with my dad over the summer (first barleywine for both of us). Walloped us but I'll never forget it, that was a good day. Got a few 2024s in the cellar now!

How are all of my barleywine friends? Shout out to @DIM and @Braunmeister_1943 ! I'm drinking an Olde Deuteronomy from Alley Kat in Edmonton, Alberta. This is a 2017 bottle. 10.3% ABV and nothing but straight up barleywine. This is tasting great. Caramel, slight bitter hops, and some nice stone fruit. Cheers!

Mrs Muchloveforhops3 was suggesting a roadtrip up to Edmonton sometime this year. Will definitely be keeping an eye out for this bw if we make the trip! :beers:

(Of course any other recommendations for our potential time up north are absolutely welcome as well )

Nice! You would probably pass through Calgary and I have plenty of recommendations there! I’m a little less familiar with Edmonton.

Tim, I will have to hit you upon the Calgary offer, Da Boss and i will be there for one night before we head out to Panorama, BC for the week.
Getting into the first Barleywine for the year from Casita in Wilson, NC, Double barrel barleywine, aged 12 months in ex-Pedro Xeminez cask used to finish Jim Beam bourbon, and then aged 20 months in Apple brandy barrels. Wow, what a major disappointment as this has soured, suspect there was some lacto in the barrels.
    Cheers!

Great start to the thread @Beersnake!

This is NoFo Brew Co (GA) Kings Way BA American Barleywine 12%. Aged for 16 mons in rye whiskey barrels. Bottled in early 2023. Cellared until now. I bought two bottles at the time. Drank one immediately cellared this one. The base beer Kings Way is one of the better ones locally right from the start. The extra aging has smoothed out the rough edges for sure. It's a little drier too. I really dig the BA on this. Excellent, well crafted beer from a small brewery near me. Cheers all!

Bummer Tom. I had a stout once aged in apple brandy barrels and it was tremendous. I would think a BW would do very nicely. Hope up you didn't eat too much dinero on that one. Cheers!

Half a glass of Black Meridian from Cellarmaker while I make dinner. A traditional English bourbon barreled black barleywine (pokes @zid :stuck_out_tongue:)

I'd probably dial back the sweetness just a bit if I could but this is dang good overall. Lots brown sugar with a bit of a burnt quality to it suggesting dark cocoa. Lots of caramel and vanilla along with a nice burned raisin note. Probably not worth the price of admission but I am enjoying this quite a bit.

Thumbprint Barley Wine 24 from New Glarus. An American barleywine without anything added or any barrel aging. 9.8% ABV. Thanks to @DIM for this one!!

Poured at just warmer than fridge temp. Pours a relatively light brown with a nice thin layer of off-white head. The nose is mild toffee, dates, prunes, malty, and a nice hint of mild hops. Not super intense, but really smooth.

The taste is wonderful. Wow. The hoppy notes come through here, but they aren't overpowering. The toffee is still there, along with wonderful notes of raisin, plums, and figs. Hay, slight citrus peel, pine, and apples. Super enjoyable!

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and dry. The aftertaste is a nice mix of hops and malts. Great beer! Thanks, Dan!

I had.a draft “Keepers of the Malt” from Beachwood the other day. I really enjoyed it, it’s a little more hoppy than JW Lees Harvest Ale or even North Coast’s Old Stock, but not as over the top hoppy like Bigfoot. It’s 13% ABV and really hid the alcohol well.

Unfortunately, it looks like a draft only release.
