Second time having this and just as enjoyable as the first. Found a 4-pack with 3 other Komes beers and couldn't resist.

I always love Bigfoot, but it's particularly good on the heels of something sweet.

This 2017 with its abundant sharp caramel and dry, lightly bitter finish is tasting absolutely superb.

Husk from Goose Island. A barleywine aged for a year in freshly emptied J. Henry bourbon barrels. 12.5% ABV. A massive thanks to @DIM for sending this one my way!

Poured at fridge temp. Pours very dark - almost black. No head. The nose is really smooth. Notes of molasses, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, oaky spice, dried apricots, and prunes.

The taste is equally as smooth, with some different flavors coming into play here (compared to the nose). I immediately get a smoky note, along with bourbon, black licorice, molasses, old leather books, nuts, raisin, apricot, plum, barley sugar, sponge toffee, and a hint of marmalade. Super complex and enjoyable. I'm finding some additional nuances emerge as it warms.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with an aftertaste of anise, dried fruit, toffee, and bourbon. A really lovely beer and I'm glad I got to try it! Thanks so much, Dan!

As the first NFL playoff game comes to an official close, decided to empty the fridge of on of the FW boxed beers we've collected over the past year...

I voted for barrel-aged barleywines of stouts in another thread poll, and this one doesn't make me want to shift from that position. It's a little earthy with a tinge of barrel spice when cold, but mellows out nicely as it warms. Still has some what I'll call Pacific bitterness showing through as well.

(sorry for the over-exposed label shot)

I'm not sure you have to - but I won't argue much beyond that.

Then I'd say, no time like the present.

Then I'd wonder why I'm being so cliché in this post

Tree of Fire from Tree House. Compliments of @DIM !! Smoked barleywine brewed utilizing a distinct hickory-smoked malt from our friends at Blue Ox in Maine, and blended with select bourbon barrel-aged barleywine barrels aged 12-24 months.11.5% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours jet black with almost no head. The nose is SMOKE. Hickory sticks, peat, salted chips, pretzels, and a bit of bourbon.

The taste is peated Scotch, chocolate, smoke, nuts, roasted malts, salted toffee, dark bread, and some bitter oak. Wow - this is one of the smokiest beers that I have tried. Really fun beer!

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a super smoky aftertaste.

@DIM completed my hope of him sending a can of this beer from the four-pack I sent him to @Beersnake. And for @Beersnake to open NBW with it this week was an absolute triumph. It was a spot-on review. You are two of the finest BAs, and you do incredible work in this thread.

Lots of rich bready malt and dark sugars in this bad boy, topped off with earthy hops. A bit of citrus and honey in there as well. Definitely a solid barleywine and really enjoyable series from Breakside :beers:

Post beer question: anyone else tried the 2025 Bigfoot? I enjoyed the barleywine, but it seemed a bit less aggressively hopped than I remembered.

Normally I’m an English style barleywine guy, predisposed to Jackie O’s beers but have occasional forays into the bitter side.

Ok so this has got to be a BA first....I am cross posting in both the Non Alcoholic and the Barleywine Appreciation threads.

I am doing sort of a "Damp January", so am exploring what is out there in the world of Near Beer. This is the most ambitious style attempt for a NA beer that I've seen so far.

Three Magnets Brewing (WA) has a line of NA beers under the "Self Care" sub-brand. This is the Gnarly Time "Barley Whine". It was part of a mixed case that I ordered from them online. The brewer notes it's brewed with maris otter, pearl barley, biscuit malt, abbey malt and flaked barley. UK Target hops.

The aroma is a bit fruity - I get a little peach jam. The taste is quite unique - sort of like a barley flavored sweet tea. Definitely interesting, it grew on me as I drank it, I'll see how I feel after drinking the 3 other cans as well.
