Starting a new version of this because the analysis from all of you was pretty fascinating.

Coming out of the closet here but I'm older than most of you at 61 and I've been following/enjoying/celebrating craft beer since the 80's. I remember Pete's, Ironside, Tremont, Commonwealth, Geary's and a lot of others that are now gone. Worked a bunch of brew fests back then for up and comers as well as existing ones too.

I feel like a lot of the comments are pretty spot on from what I see as well, but also maybe history also repeats.
I remember (not well, I've had a lot of beers!) a few industry crashes and consolidation well, so maybe it's also somewhat of a normal cycle.

I think @Jbrews (paragraphs are your friend :sunglasses:) and @Sheppard raise great points regarding craft beer now and it's possible future, although I'm hopeful that it's maybe not quite as pessimistic. (I know that's not the intent, but def a bummer because I love great beer so much)

If it's any consolation, my oldest (23) and his friends, regularly try different beers to compare and discuss among them (hope?) , the weed thing, tho, is def bigger among them.

    Here's to 2025!

and for a funny/not funny laugh, here's Google's AI Summary when I do a few different searches for Boston Craft Beer in 80's

Other notable beer brands from the Boston area include:
    • Truly Hard Seltzer
    • Twisted Tea
    • Angry Orchard Hard Cider
    • Dogfish Head Brewery
    • Hard Mountain Dew
    • Sauza Agave Cocktails
    • Angel City Brewery
    • Coney Island Brewing
    • Haffenreffer Brewery: The Boston Beer Company has been an anchor tenant and investor at Haffenreffer Brewery since the mid-1980s.

I don't know if I'd call my view pessimistic so much as urgent. I have seen a couple of favorites die and I don't want more to follow suit. What that means, as far as actions go is to support some of the smaller/medium guys rather than a brewery with all of the momentum in the world. I need to make it out to Amory's more. I need to make it to (close by) Idle Hands more. That probably means that I'll continue to not go to Tree House unless meeting someone there or I absolutely have the urge. I don't feel like I'm missing out most of the time, although I do love Julius.

Weed is so easy to market through music and pop culture.

Find a way to get craft beer in there and voila!:sunglasses:

Sorry, maybe pessimistic was my projection. I feel the same and try to give my $$ to small/medium as well. I'm hoping my normally cynical view of things doesn't pan out for 2025 and beyond.

We just had one here in Portsmouth.

Great Rhythm(Portsmouth, NH) - West End Taproom closed for good as of Jan 19.

Now they do have some form of plans in motion(I think) for a new brewing space a ways down the road well outside of town, on West Rd. But I’ve also heard from local good friends at breweries, that they weren’t sure if a taproom would be a thing again or just a focus on distro. Time will tell. I have as much info as you all at this time. Wishing them well.

Regardless of what brewery was in that waterfront space, it was absolutely gorgeous and we have a lot of memories there. Summer walks to the patio for a breeze or doing a wreath building event in 1.5 for of new snow and 20 degree Temps. A Covid outdoor event ha.

Outrider Beer Co in Amesbury shut its doors.
Suppose it’s hard for a small town of 16k people to support 4 breweries.

Saw it on Reddit, apparently Mayflower Brewing in Plymouth is closing at the end of the month. They posted on the Mass brewer’s guild facebook group.

Bummer on Mayflower. Have been really enjoying sipping on their casks around Boston..not enough breweries brew cask ales.

I know we sometimes look at the actual data and see the numbers aren’t that wild when comparing closures to openings.

But, we are seeing a lot of legacy brands being pushed out, closed and merged(that won’t help) What I think we are finally seeing is the mid tier truly having lost its place and now unable to recover or sustain post Covid and rough economy. Add in the fact people are more interested in the local brewery and buying hyper fresh/local as opposed to a mayflower or Wachusett on a warm shelf.

I also think the number of breweries opening as data is a little skewed. Some of them are probably just going to be rough decisions and close a lot faster than they thought. Hell Outrider only lasted less than two years. And I am sorry to hear someone’s efforts did not pan out and I hope the stress wasn’t awful dealing with it.

So I think we’re going to see a period of legacy dropping out, new breweries popping up on a wish and dream, and many of those from a few years back who are struggling, break.

This is indeed and interesting time. There is no real historical data to look at, as the IPA Heady boom that really kick started all of this had never happened before.

Well that sucks about Mayflower. Their porter is the only one available near me and is awesome. I'll need to grab some packs this weekend.

I agree, @Jbrews. Just looking at the data also completely misses any discussion of quality or consistency.

Can you please share the post? Not seeing it on their page. Seems odd they would announce it there rather than their own social media.

That is a total bummer about Mayflower. Cool spot and they do brew some really nice beers
