Greetings one and all, lovers and the curious, of Baltic porters!

Baltic porters have a long and wondrous history starting from the late 18th century up to now.

A dude named Marcin Chmielarz started Baltic Porter Day. Here's an English-language link (by I believe Marcin) explaining things about Baltic Porter Day and Baltic porters in general: Baltic Porter Day.

For BeerAdvocate purposes, we're celebrating this beer style day with an online tasting. On the plus side, we're extending the tasting through the weekend of January 18-20 (GMT, aka BA time), so if you just so happen to have a bunch of Baltic porters that you'd love to rave about but don't want to indulge in within a single day, you're golden. And you're golden, as well, if you only have a single bottle. Participate at your own discretion and inclination.

There are no hard requirements on the BA side of things. If you have a Baltic porter (or two or three or...), just go ahead and post a pic with the name of the beer. Your thoughts about the beer are certainly encouraged and welcomed, but nothing is obligatory.

The point is: enjoy this style, share your thoughts, and wax as poetic (or not) as you wish during this online tasting!

Do eterycznych bogów, którzy dali nam porter bałtycki! Dzięki!!

...I figure I'll try to bookend my Baltic porter tastings with one of two Polish Baltic porters I have on hand:

Browar Fortuna -- Komes Baltic Porter
    ABV: 9%; pouring temperature: 61.3 °F: bottling info: Lot number 56 / 44 / 22 / 1
Source: local purchase (Coaltrain Fine Wine, Craft Beer & Spirits)

    look: 3.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Clear, dark pour, looks opaque black in the glass; thin, khaki head, dissipates to a thin, fizzy tan ring. Beautiful nose; anise and licorice blended with bitter and dark chocolate; modest roasted grain taste; spruce tips. The flavor builds upon the smell; mint and chocolate; delicate bitterness; mellow sweetness; vanilla. Soothing and mellow mouthfeel; soft and pillowy with a fine alcohol warmth; lightly chewy residual sugar feel.

An overall very fine Baltic porter experience. I poured this one slightly warm (but I tend to prefer my beers like that anyway). The scent is great while both taste and mouthfeel are just divine. This beer is surprisingly easy drinking, moderates its ABV quite well, and has plenty of depth and complexity to excite the palate.

Thanks for kicking things off, @beergoot !! I must admit, this is a style that I often neglect. I grabbed this for the occasion. Öö X from Põhjala in Estonia. They call this a bigger and bolder version of Öö, aged in freshly emptied Cognac barrels. 13% ABV.

Poured at just warmer than fridge temp and allowed to warm a bit more. Pours a very thick black with almost zero head despite an aggressive pour. The nose is heavily influenced the cognac barrels. Black licorice, dark malts, burnt wood, tobacco, red grapes, sawdust, and a little bit of baked apple. Really smooth. Doesn't come across as boozy despite the ABV.

The taste is quite sweet. Much more than suggested by the nose. Lots of ripe fruit, cognac, slight citrus peel, tanins, marmalade, and some roasty notes. This is largely dominated by the sweet cognac barrels. Can't say I love the taste, but it's interesting.

So I had to go to the DMV today and apply for my "Real ID" since I fear my "fake ID" may prevent me from buying beer on a plane in the future. Afterwards, I decided to stop buy the big beer store to see if I could find some Baltic porter. I was hoping that this one would be languishing on the shelf and lo and behold! it was.

Except it wasn't languishing, and had a box date from this year, leaving the questionability of a sticker date aside. Raven's Roost is a core beer for Parkway out of SW Virginia, though I don't find it on the shelf as regularly as their site indicates they produce it.

I gave this beer a 4+ rating 10 years ago, and have enjoyed it in the year's since. What do I think now?

Built up a nice head, though it fell fairly easily to a crusty top. A refill from the bottom of the can and I now have a medium thick collar with 2/3 coverage of thin, tan bubbles. The nose is quite toasty - in the sense of intentionally letting the bread in the toaster oven get to the black color stage without having to wave a kitchen towel after opening the oven door.

Second whiff, and there's still that impression, but also a slightly astringent, mildly weak dark roast coffee. There's also perhaps a lagering fruitiness lifting and slightly twisting these aromas. Taste has a similar vibe from the fruit notes - indistinct behind the blank ink of the roast, but trying to get out.

The opening taste is slightly metallic and a bit more bitter than I expect from a Baltic porter. The "metallic" note, I should say, is not unanticipated, as it is a note I get in varying degrees in Baltic porters, for one reason or another, it's the bitterness combining with it that is a bit more bracing (then again, it is fresh, maybe?).

The coffee, charred toast, and roasted malt notes make up the rest of the tasting experience. It isn't heavy, but is fairly robust with malt and perceived hops, and finishes fairly clean despite the robust, bitter flavors. It isn't very carbonated, but has a nice "fuzzy" feel to it.

I'm not sure I'd give this quite as high a score today, but I'd still be near 4. I am guessing I'll have a couple cans that get to at least a couple months old and I'll have to see how that bitterness plays out in that time.

More marketing (from 7 years ago)...

Thank you for opening this thread @beergoot !! Really appreciate the hosting and some awesome background info. Im excited for this style , its one I used to sample from frequently, but havent been focused on as much for years. Im thinking that this tasting may re-motivate me to search out more of these examples.

I also wanted to share a beer infographic from Em Sauter, the owner and artist behind Pints and Panels. Image can be found here at her website, you can find similar work on pretty much any beer style.

But also inserting the graphic below for some nice intro about the style.
Ive got one other image the Em sent me today for a little more background and learning of the style. Ill post it later in the thread.

And of course, I will go grab a beer to share with all of you in the thread too. Just got home from soccer so preparing to rally my beer glass now!

    thanks for hosting @beergoot
tonight I start my beer contributions to this thread with a local Connecticut brewery. I always like to promote Connecticut beers with these events!
This is Fox Farm Brewing out of Salem, CT and their Echos Baltic Porter. This beer is aged in bourbon barrels and has honey added to it during the aging process. This 12 oz can is from Batch #3 and registers 11% ABV.

onto my brief review (Ive done a full one in the DB already):
The beer pours a rich brown cola color and rests much darker in my glass. A densely packed eggshell white head foams up about 1 cm and fades to a very sturdy edging. ONe large island of foam rests in the center of my glass. I get some scattered lattice when I swirl my glass.
Aroma is rich molasses and raisins with a little charred wood (probably the bourbon) and a little brown sugar note. No hop character that I really detect.
First sip reveals a medium to light body with smooth texture and very fine, gentle carbonation. The physical traits make this a very easy drinking beer. Flavor is molasses and raisins with a little charred wood. The char note carries through the finish and there is a little bite on the beer, maybe the booze. Never any hop character and no warming to indicate booziness. Pretty easy drinking baltic porter, the bourbon barrels and char make this a little unique in my opinion.
Id probably give this around a 4.1 if I scored it again today. Im enjoying it and also enjoy bourbon barrels, but sort of wish the char wasnt so strong on the flavor profile.

I'm a bit curious if there's an industrious soul out there that will do the actual statistics on how many "plain" Baltic porters are tasted here versus "adjusted" in some fashion. The style isn't overly present on beer shelves in my experience, and I know I am heavily leaning towards batting .500 in my own division of substyles.

To that end, I wasn't sure if Devil's Backbone (AB InBev owned) still makes Danzig, and it wasn't on the shelf today. Their beer finder doesn't have it as an option despite it still having a page on their website, so I might be stuck to the beers I bought today.

Chapter 6 from Cabin Brewing in Calgary. A Baltic porter aged in maple syrup barrels. 10.7% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a very dark brown - almost black. No head. The nose is maple, toffee, milk chocolate, vanilla, marshmallow, and slight cinnamon candy.

The taste is really nice. Caramel candy, coffee grounds, maple syrup, Belgian chocolate, vanilla, and nicely roasted malts. A really lovely and smooth beer.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a nice toffee/maple aftertaste. This is a really nice beer. Not overly sweet at all, which sometimes happens with maple barrel beers. Would definitely buy again.

The pour cascades out in a clear, dark brown manner; opaque in the glass yet emanating a dark, mysterious brown depth; thick and frothy head, towering and billowing columns of foam surrounded with sticky, spidery traces of foam. Malt sweetness on the nose; earthy yet bright. The taste has an airy fullness; rich yet restrained; light cocoa and soft chocolate; sublime and understated bitterness. Medium-heavy mouthfeel; smooth and glassy.

Not a full and robust iteration of the style, this beer still resonates with a fine and refined dark beer ambience.

Good choice ! My two favorite Baltic Porters are brewed in my ancestral homeland of Poland: Komes and Żywiec. Smooth, dry, creamy and relatively high ABV... but not ridiculously high. My wife and I love to split a large bottle of Żywiec with our bacon and pancakes on Sunday mornings. But she is practicing Dry January and I am not... so I get it all to myself tomorrow !!! There is a 3rd Polish brand that I see in my local shop on occasions..."Black Boss".. I don't care for that one, it is too sweet. Na Zdrowie !

Thank you @beergoot for hosting this event.

I went to my local pub last evening for a tap take over by south France brewery ‘Brasserie le Detour’ - 8 handles - including a Baltic Porter, ‘Fortitude’.
Fortitude is a traditional European Baltic Porter, blended with a strong ale aged in Laphroaig single malt whiskey barrels.

The brew delivered impressively fresh, with an excellent brown foam crowning deep brown brew.
Rich nose of smoky molasses, dark chocolate, heavy malt and an herbal note that defies description.
Taste brought a curveball to my expectations. Laphroaig Scotch whiskey uses a distinctive peat which gives a unique smoky character that integrated itself complementarily into the beer. The initial flavor, cold from the tap, was familiar Baltic Porter and ‘something else’. But as the brew warmed, wonderful additional layers of vanilla, oak, and spirits compounded the flavor profile. The 95 IBUs delivered fine bitterness and mighty 9.5% ABV brought intensity to the finish with mouthwatering ethanol present. Residual notes of molasses and dark chocolate made for a unique and satisfying experience.
Mouthfeel is velvety, with medium carbonation.
Overall, art of the craft on display in elevating an already fine brew into a creative delight that was worth breaking my Dry January streak. Getting this on draught was ding ding bonus points.

This is a style I enjoy during winter days. Being widely available locally is certainly a plus.

Going with a classic Żywiec Baltic Porter. Pronounced roasted coffee, excellent weight, definitely not overly sweet, quite balanced overall, an old school style that I dig.

My first of three examples I'm hoping to contribute today. This one has a prominent raspberry taste along with some smokey malt. Never been a fan of raspberry flavoring but this seems to work well. Kinda reminds me of cough syrup but enjoyable.

I think my next 2 are unadulterated so really looking forward to those.

Suprised I'm the first with this east coast baltic porter icon: a non-adjuncted 2020 Framinghammer, from Jack's Abby. Probably the best known Baltic porter in Massachussets, this is my all-time favorite snowy weather beer.

For four years in a can, this is tasting great - a little oxidative but that works well with the cocoa powder and molasses flavors, and the 10% abv keeps it sharp and integrated.
