    Modern Smorefare 2 from Commonwealth Brewing in Virginia. A cognac and bourbon aged imperial stout with dark chocolate, marshmallow, and graham cracker. A decadent dessert stout if there ever was one.

    Happy Thursday BAs! Oh boy, more snow. At least I'm getting exercise from all this shoveling. Today's pick is Tynt Meadow from Mount Saint Bernard Abbey. I love this beer, but in this neck of the woods, it only shows up around Christmas... good thing I grabbed a bunch last month. Cheers!

    Finally getting around to enjoying this pickup from Fall 2023, Traditional Imperial Stout Circa 1850 from Zebulon Artisanal Ales in Weaverville, NC, just outside Asheville. Malts are brown and black, heavy roast. 11% ABV with hopping at 100 IBU's. Perfect mouthfeel. This nails the historical RIS style perfectly!
    Brewer Mike Karnowski always dedicates his beer, and this one was for Vasily Arkhipov, the man who saved the world in October 1962 from the nuclear armed B-59 Russian Submarine, as he did not consent to give approval to launch a nuclear torpedo while his Captain and Political Officer did...wow! Listening to Lithium on Sirius.

    look: 3.5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

    Reddish-brown pour, clear, opaque brown in the glass; fizzy, dissipating head, light tan color, leaves a small ring on top of the beer. Rich, dark chocolate aroma offset with notes of mint and peppermint; coffee. Bold flavors; dark cocoa powder and dark roast coffee; peppermint.

    I can't tell if it's the peppermint that gives the overall taste a bit of phenol bite and harshness, but it likely is the peppermint candy. There is no mention of coffee in the beer, either, but I certainly get the impression of coffee. All in all, the aroma is the high-point of the beer and the taste, well, I wavered between a 3.75 or 4.0, but with the somewhat odd flavor bite, I opted for the lower rating. It's still a great beer overall, but one should like mint and peppermint to fully appreciate it.

    ...I like Rush but not a collector of their music...I did see them at Cleveland Public Hall in 1974...they opened for Manfred Mann and Uriah Heep...

    1) Third Space Good Cheer (5.4%): A German Dunkel from Wisconsin with flavors of dark grains, cocoa, oak and earth, faint roast.
    versus
    2) Talking Waters Sound Czech (5.5%): A Czech Dark Lager from Minnesota with flavors of dark chocolate, grains, sweet espresso. Sweet. (Correctly matched the two beers blind)

    Euro Dark Lager Battle. First is Third Space Good Cheer. Listed as a dunkel, but drinks more complex. Dark grains, caramel, and hints of cocoa and roast. Very nice. Next is Talking Water Sound Czech. A Czech dark lager with lots of cocoa and sweet dark chocolate. A bit darker and sweeter for the style.
    Both drink nicely in different ways, but I think Third Space drinks more to style.
    Winner: Third Space Good Cheer
