The Good Life - collab between Highland Park and Windsor Homebrew Supply. Barleywine aged for 11 months in a Heaven Hill bourbon barrel. Barleywine aged for 11 months in a Ginja barrel that previously held Woodinville bourbon. Also a small piece of what became the Old Youth blend that had been aging in stainless. 13.3% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a very dark brown with zero head. The nose is bourbon, vanilla, toffee pudding, rich malts, and a bit of maple in the background.

The taste is sweet and salty toffee, bourbon, molasses, vanilla, walnuts, and sweet candy. Lovely smooth flavor.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and the aftertaste is sweet caramel. Great barleywine!

New to me Arkansas Brewery, Green House Aleworks. They are very $$$ A spin off of Social Project based on local gossip. This first dip in the pool will make me swim again. F it everything is pricey now...

Fiddle Leaf Fig triple Hazy IPA with Nelson, Galaxy & Citra Hops, 10.0% ABV; 4.35 overall

Pours a super hazy straw/gold with a thumb of tight pearl colored head. Very good head retention & stellar lacing

S: Tropical fruit, melons, white grapes

T: Follows the nose, very dry, limes, tangerines, grassyness & white grape dominate up front. Hints of coconut, pineapple as this beer warms up, some pomelo & green melon, plus white grape musk as well. Plenty of dryness, pineapple, pomelo, white grape & some oaky/woody notes in the finish

MF: Medium body, creamy carbonation, superb balance, some gritty notes

Great drinkability. ABV is very well disguised, but felt a little

12 oz can canned 11/6/24 into a pokal.
L: SRM 3 pours 99% clear with some very light yeast, steady carbo bubbles, a thin white head that recedes to edge foam, light random lacing.
S: Cereal grains, a hint of maltings, a light metallic note, distant pastry dough.
T: Grains, gently sweet, a touch of yeast, distant pastry dough which lingers a bit with the grain bill.
F: Bright, crisp, lustrous, mostly clean drinking medium-light bodied mouthfeel with a fairly short and lightly dry finish.
O: A very pleasant tasting Lager with brilliant luster. Easy to drink and has a lovely craft taste and feel overall. It is very good in its style.

I am finally going to join into this excellent thread, not that I didn’t have about 8 new stouts last night, none of them more than 3 oz.
But researching other things I noticed I hadn’t rated this so fixed that today.
Sent plenty of these out to people and have had it several times, but never a full can at home to concentrate on the beer.
The pour is stout black with a short brown head that left scant lacing.
The taste led with dark fruit, merging into coffee and chocolate, a touch of bourbon and a hint of oak. Other flavors swirled around, vanilla and molasses, a touch of leather and earthy goodness.
Well balanced, more AIS than RIS in my opinion, but I still really like it.
The feel is slightly viscous but certainly short of chewy. A little too easy to quaff for the ABV.
OA, I enjoy these annually because they’re really good.

Howdy, NBWers! I got some catching up to do in here, but before I do that, I'll share the new beer currently in my glass:
Saint Arnold's French Press Imperial Coffee Porter
    9.4% ABV • 12 oz. can • 11/7/24 born-on date

Short version: I love everything about it. The sweeter nose with hints of milk chocolate, the dark-roasted flavors that lean heavily toward Antigua-style coffee (IMO of course) and the fluctuating mouthfeel that is sometimes a crispy midweight, other times a chewy thick oily heavyweight.

The beer's overall BA.com rating is a respectable 4.06, but that's fairly low for the style considering that ratings in this style tend to trend high. I'm wondering if there isn't enough coffee flavor in it to pull higher ratings? It has coffee notes, but if I'm being 100% honest, I'm not sure I can discern more coffee flavor here than in most really good imperial stouts/porters. I guess I love it so much b/c it does taste a lot like those *really good* big stouts ... I mean, this goes toe-to-toe with Narhwal and Old Raspy IMO, and that's enough for me to give it pretty big rating numbers.

I've slept on this beer for well over a year now, but I've awakened. It will go in my rotation of favorite big stouts from now on. I like this more than either of its barrel-aged versions FWIW, and it's pretty easy to find here in Houston.

    Cheers!

Clear, golden body; lively yet sparse carbonation; skimpy head, loosely sudsy with sparse density and volume. A fine aroma blend of spiciness and tropical fruit; floral; nice sweetness melding with a soft graininess. Very nice flavor; fine blend of delicate sweetness, nuanced hop bitterness and an earthy spiciness and fruitiness; unique. Medium bodied; a spiffy counterintuitive smoothness offset with a gentle coarseness on the palate; semi-dry, semi-juicy.

This is an interesting beer that is only weighed down by a somewhat lackluster appearance. The nose is very intriguing and the taste and mouthfeel are very satisfying. Worth revisiting.

Bigger Lebeerski from Carbon Nation in Riverside. An imperial stout aged for 15 months in bourbon barrels. 14.2% ABV.

Poured at just warmer than fridge temp. Pours jet black, but not really thick and viscous. About a half inch of brown head. The nose is coffee, vanilla, roasted malts, milk, and a hint of bourbon.

The taste is really nice. Chocolate, vanilla, bitter roasted malts, smoke, slight soy sauce, toffee, bourbon, and sourdough bread.

Mouthfeel is fairly light for an imperial stout, but I'm not complaining. the aftertaste is toffee and roasted malts. Overall, a really nice stout.

Awful workday and I have to be up late the next few days to deal with management things at home so I opened some IPAs I got a few days ago a day early. First up for NBW is Nymph by local coffee and BA stout legends Living Waters Brewing. Review below.

Dated 1/23/25, into a wide wine glass.

Pours a fantastic light orange, big rocky foam. Aroma is soft mango, overripe sweet orange, and huge dankness. Wow this one smells good. Flavor is really interesting and quite drinkable. It moves from some pine and vegetal matter to juicy orange, to slightly bitter dankness, before closing with some doughy, sweet biscuit malt and spicy bitterness. Finish is sticky and slightly sweet, mouthfeel is crazy. The advertised fluffy mouthfeel is well on display in this one. Minimal carbonation and a very smooth thickness help pump up the hop flavors while adding minimal bitterness to keep things balanced.

Sometimes Living Waters hits with IPAs, sometimes they miss, and rarely do they make any that are middle of the road. This one is really good and the QUADRUPLE dry hop is on full presentation here. It's got most of the standard hazy hops crammed in it and showcases all of the most typical flavors for the style in an approachable, balanced way. Tasty stuff.

Two wins on the soccer field today for teams I coach, so definitely some celebratory beers tonight! Cross posted this one with the Imperial Stout is Life thread.

First beer is Flights and Flagons Imperial Stout from Imprint Beer Co in Hatfield, PA. This is a 9.5% brew with little other information on the can or brewery website.

    Onto my review:

I am sampling a cellar temp 16 oz can poured into my snifter. Beer was part of an exchange with my brothers at Christmas.
The beer pours a jet black color with zero light penetration. A dense spongey head of about 1 cm foams up and leaves tight lattice on swirls and and sips. This looks like an imperial stout! the foam does fades slowly to a sturdy surface covering and edging.
Aroma on this beer is dark chocolate malt, bakers chocolate, some candy orange citrus note and I keep getting an earthy cinnamon note. No idea what , if any additives were used in the beer. Label is absent of info.
First sip reveals a medium body with smooth texture and very fine tingly carbonation. There is a little sticky coating across my palate with each sip.
Flavor is similar to the nose dark bakers chocolate and some roasted malt, a bitter coffee note too. I again get candied chocolate oranges here. But the dark chocolate lingers on the finish and dries out my palate. I wish I knew if there was anything added here. Solid imperial stout.

Foldanroll from Bottle Logic. A raspberry danish barleywine. Aged in bourbon barrels and finished with raspberries and cream cheese. 12.3% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a dark brown with minimal head. The nose is raspberry, cream cheese, oak, and a bit of toffee.

The taste is exactly as described. Wow. Definitely getting the cream cheese on the taste. This just seems wrong for a barleywine, but if this is what you were hoping for it's definitely right there. Raspberry, vanilla, blueberry, and some chocolate.

Really nice overall. Definitely a lot of raspberry and cream cheese. Odd, but definitely fits perfectly within the description.

2nd beer is final one for tonight. 17% Imperial Stout aged in maple bourbon barrels. Eight is part of the variants for the 8th Anniversary from Armada Brewing in New Haven, CT. Someone in the Stout/barleywine BIF will get one of these cans as well!!

    onto my review:

Sampling a cellar temp 16 oz can poured into my snifter. Picked up at the brewery last week. no date stamping on the can.
The beer pours jet black into my glass and a minimal tan head foams up and quickly fades to a very thin edge layer. No lattice when I swirl or sip.
Aroma is fudge brownie and hints of toffee and bourbon with a little sweet maple syrup. No hop character to be found here.
First sip reveals a pretty big body and sticky texture. Very fine and prickly carbonation as well and these bubbles are very active on my palate on each mouthful of beer.
Flavor is similar to the aroma with some fudge brownie and caramel, mixing and some bourbon too. Maple is very faint but present on the finish which gives way to some warming booze that lingers after each sip from my glass. This is a boozy imperial stout and one that I will be sipping for many hours still. Another solid big beer for the Anniversary shenanigans from Armada!

Toppling Goliath Seismic Sue picked up on my Mizzou beer run, 9.3% ABV; 4.23 pverall

    Canned 11/25/24

Pours a very hazy gold/straw color with a pinky of cream-colored head. Okay head retention & lacing

S: Some OJ, white grapes, green melons

T: Juice-orama, some sweet orange, some bitter, Let's say Kara-Kara, a little dry up front, white grape as well. Pineapple sneaking in & then taking over along with pink grapefruit & dryness as this beer warms up. Finishes with dryness, Kara-Kara & Pineapple

MF: Medium body, subdued carbonation, skews pretty acidic once warm

Would've loved to try this much fresher, still a very drinkable juice assault. A good ride, but was hoping for a little better one

Lower Lawrenceville, a dry-hopped saison by East End Brewing.

Pours a hazy light amber with a thick, fluffy head. Strong aromas of assorted fruit rise first - pineapple, pear, apricot, and melon, backed by a sour vinegary funk that's hard to place. All those fruits come through in the tasting, with additional notes of cucumber (no, really), orange peel, honey, clove, and flowers. Medium-bodied overall, with a slightly lingering syrupy feel balanced with mild earthy, piney bitterness and high carbonation. This was one of my favorites in recent memory. Lots of complexity in all dimensions.

Barrel Aged Corner Slice from Hoppin Frog. 16 fl oz can, Rare Beer Club selection. Picked up at the brewery, Akron, OH, 30/01/25. Reviewed 02/02/25 (Review 3450). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottom of can stamped “BEST BY DEC 17, 2034.” Stored in reefer at the distributor, at 39 degrees F at home. Served at 48.7 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 55.5 degrees F.
Appearance – 3. Just plain ugly and unappetizing.
First pour – Medium Amber (SRM 12), murky.
Body – Deep Amber (SRM 15), opaque. Under direct light, pumpkin orange in color and a slight precipitate is visible. When rear-lite, it disperses light into a cinnamon glow.
Head: Small (Maximum 0.5 cm, aggressive center pour), amber, medium density, fizzy. Gone almost instantly, leaving a modest roiling effervescence.
    Lacing – None
Aroma – 4.25 – Weak carrots and raisins. No hops, no yeast, no ethanol (16.5 % ABV, as marked on label). No disulfide or diacetyl. No barrels.
Flavor – 4.25 – Begins sweet with distinct carrot cake flavors. No yeast, no hops, no ethanol. No disulfides, no diacetyl. Mild gastric warming. A bit of barrel on the aftertaste.
Palate – 4.25 – Full; creamy; soft carbonation.
Style: Follows the style guidelines as condensed by BA.
Final impression and summation: 4.25 Although the barrel-aging is not obvious until the end, it definitely differentiates the BA version from the non-BA. The BA version is so much smoother and in general tastier.
    Rating 4.18, rDev +0.5%
