Cross posted in the New Beer Weekend thread.
Tonight Im watching the SB and wanted a beer to enjoy for most of the game. An English BArleywine seems just about right. This is Forest & Main out of Ambler, PA and their Reflections of Reality bourbon barrel aged barleywine that registers 12% ABV. Beer was bottled 11/9/2023. Purchased in a beer store in Harrisburg, PA around Christmas time.

    onto my review:
Sampling a cellar temp waxed bottle poured into my snifter. The beer pours a rich chestnut color with bright copper highlights when I hold the glass to a light source.
A small dense khaki colored head foams up about 1.5 cm. This foam fades to a sturdy edging and surface covering that remains through the sampling.
Aroma on this beer is not surprisingly malt forward with toffee and a little butterscotch and some brown sugar. I also get a little light fruit (pears is what I get) and only faint whiffs of bourbon. No hop character on the nose and also not really boozy which is nice for a higher ABV brew.
First sip reveals a medium body and very fine carbonation that is fairly gentle on my palate. Not really sticky or coating and texture is pretty smooth and easy drinking for a big barleywine.
Flavor is some toffee and brown sugar with a little pear again and then bourbon rolls back in, but not boozy or fusol at all. No hops either on the flavor profile. Some lingering toffee sweetness long after the swallow.
This is an enjoyable barleywine that hides its booze, I would like a little more umph on the feel, but I am enjoying sipping this beer while watching the SB.

Glad to hear this was tasty! Interesting JO has switched to cans, and no cost reduction, Phillie fan jeers are deserved! Hopefully Fonta Flora has picked up some tips and tricks in the BA game as FF is pretty inconsistent but very expensive (i recently saw one of their 750 ml BA BW's at my old local for $40). Hope all is well in SEPA, spring training is right around the corner!
    Cheers!

@beergoot has me thinking about strong, still beer so I finally opened this bottle of Xyauyu Barrel. These Italian barleywines are deliberately oxidized then bottled still. I've had the regular version, one aged in peated Scotch barrels, and one aged in a barrel used for soy sauce (not second use). They are all stunningly good but the O.G is my favorite. This version spent time in Rum barrels.

This might be as good as the Gold (regular) version. Just bursting with honey sweetness, light caramel, marshmallow, graham crackers, and so much more. The body is full and sticky. What a magnificent dessert beer. I'll enjoy this a few ounces at a time in the coming weeks.

    Blithering Idiot - Weyerbacher

It has been a while since even seeing this one. Still very enjoyable. Unlike my review, from seventeen years back, it is gem clear, the licorice is mild, and it is more about the figs and brown sugar. Far from a syrupy sweet mess, the bitterness is mild and very welcome.

Hey Tom! The Xyauyu's are definitely sweeter and a bit lighter, coming across as something to enjoy outside on a sunny spring day. Don and Dystopias make me want to sit with a cigar in a well worn leather chair. A lack of carbonation is really all they have in common.

Dropping a barleywine/stout bif clue here, I won't be sending this to my target because hoppy barleywines don't suit him. He won't see the clue though since he doesn't post here.

Last week @DIM and I had a beer exchange and good conversation at a local spot, and I'm finally getting around to opening one. Gracious me is this delicious. The balance betwixt the beer and bourbon barrel is perfect. Seriously thinking I need to stock up on this one.

    The local spot? Right here-

Make sure to click all three little tabs- Draft Beer, Cellar Beer, and Bottle Beer. This place isn't screwing around.
