Barleywine Appreciation Thread (2025)

Pleasantly surprised by this one. A bit hoppy and the malt sweetness is subdued. Best comparison from memory is Lolev barleywine.

 

@Spade gave me a hankering. This is just a magnificent barleywine and a nice way to cap off a fun day. Took my kids to see Jesus Christ Superstar and it was a stellar performance.



I'm sending this to my target in the barleywine/stout bif. Though he has reviewed several beers from Revolution, this is not one of them. My target has not posted here this year or last.

Poured from a twelve ounce can, the body is a dark brown with a small, thin white head. Very light lacing.

Aroma is a delightful mix of butterscotch and sweet bourbon. The former must come from the heritage Bloody Butcher corn used in brewing.

Taste features the barrel, a bit less sweet than in the nose. Notes of corn, caramel, figs and nutty malts in the background.

Mouthfeel is good, heavy and soft with tingly carbonation.

Another fine sipping Barleywine from the masters in Athens, Ohio.

Lol left this one in the freezer a little too long. It’s COLDDDDD. Tasting nice. Haven’t seen any 2025, but then again I haven’t been looking for or buying beer lately

 

I picked up a couple of Bigfoot six packs at Whole Foods the other day. A local beer store somehow just got 2024 in for a readymade back to back.

 

I always look forward to this iconic beer, and this year is no exception - the “C” hops impart a massive (90 IBU’s) bitterness balanced by the substantial malt backbone. I could bathe in this delicious barleywine.

 

Enjoying this treat courtesy of @Spade thank you! It's a cuvee of 3 parts fresh (2023) barleywine and 1 part 2015 barleywine aged 7-8 years in Jim Beam barrels. I believe different recipes were used.



This absolutely tastes like a well aged beer! Smooth caramel, some potpourri like spice, mellow English hops, well incorporated whiskey, plus hints of cherry and vanilla. Very tasty stuff, thanks Harry!

 

Glad you enjoyed that one. I'm hoping it's a regular release.

 

Weyerbacher Insanity



My first time having this. Slightly chilled, strong flavor of what strikes me as candied sugar. Prominent alcohol.

Probably won't replace Blithering Idiot for me but a damn fine barleywine.

 

I’ve posted my superlatives for this on WBAYDN! Those of you in CA may have encountered this offering, if not, do so now!!!!

 

Central Waters Brewing 3-Year-Aged Brewer's Reserve Bourbon Barrel Barleywine. At Central Waters Brewing MKE. It is as good as every 3-year vintage of this beer has been.
