Central Waters Brewing 4-Year-Aged Brewer's Reserve Bourbon Barrel Barleywine. This is excellent. The 4-year-aged edition of this annual series of barrel-aged barleywines has often been the sweet spot.

    Revolution Lumber Struck (2025)

Thought I had a new-to-me Central Waters barleywine left, but alas, I’d reviewed it before. Feeling like taking some tasting notes, I opted for this one instead.

Lumber Struck pours a red-hued, near-black color with a thin finger of dark khaki head that has modest retention and leaves minimal lacing.

Popping the can, there’s a delicious aroma of Greek Easter Bread (mahleb and sweet dough) followed quickly by spicy, rye-esque cinnamon. A little cherry, oak and leather play behind.

The taste is more cherry and light molasses, with loads of that earthy, cinnamon-like amburana throughout. Quite a spicy finish as a result, combatting any residual sweetness. There definitely is some wood in the aftertaste, though. Maybe even a touch of sesame.

Medium bodied and moderately sticky feel with soft carbonation fizz.

Probably the best use of amburana I’ve encountered. Not a daily drinker, but a wonderful treat — just like tsoureki itself. :beers:

NBW cross-post. Three Floyds Brewing Pillar of Beasts. A barleywine brewed with coconut and salted caramel, and aged for 12 months in bourbon barrels. This is quite a unique barleywine experience. The caramel and coconut flavors battle for supremacy, which creates a memorable experience.

Big and sweet, but this still comes across as American-ish to me. Burned caramel and sweet, sweet bourbon dominate with praline, vanilla, brown sugar, and very faint raisin lending support. The mouthfeel is satisfyingly sticky and still. Not subtle in any way, this beast is a lot of fun. Thanks Ryan!

    Cross posted with NBW thread.
This is At the Helm, an English Style barleywine aged in bourbon barrels and registering 10%. Beer is brewed by Counter Weight Brewing in Cheshire, Connecticut.

Sampling a cellar temp 500 ml bottle poured into my snifter. Purchased at the brewery a few weeks ago. The beer pours a deep mahogany color with a dense beige head of about .5 cm foaming up. This foam remains as an edge layer throughout the sampling. Leaves some clingy dense lattice when I swirl the beer or take a sip.
Aroma is bold, malt driven and sort of fruity. I get toffee and bourbon notes with a little brown sugar and hints of plum. No hop character on the nose and the ABV is hidden with no fusol or black pepper notes.
First sip reveals a medium body with slightly sticky texture and some coating on my lips and palate. Very fine and fairly gentle carbonation. The beer feels like a barleywine.
Flavor is malty with lots of toffee, brown sugar and some bourbon notes in the background. I do get a little fruit, plums I believe as well. Definitely on the sweeter side but not cloying and the beer is not very boozy either. I get just a little black peppery bite on the finish, but no warmth. no hops anywhere on this beer either.
I believe this is a sipping beer even without being too boozy on feel. Glad to have tried this one and would definitely drink this beer again.

Level Crossing VII XXV XVII BBA Wheatwine, 10.5% ABV. Pours deep brown with a one-finger beige head that left slight lacing. Aroma is toffee, vanilla, and orange. Taste follows, plus honey, slightly sweet, faintly bitter, no bourbon burn. Excellent mouthfeel, overall world-class.

I love me some wheatwine, and this is the best I've ever had, thanks to @NorsemanOne including this in my BIF care package! Could drink these all day.

Ok, here is a case for, “If it ain’t broke.” Warming is definitely helping, but I still wish the Killer didn’t have a mustache in the first place. The orange peel, clove, and ginger are present, but sour apple, think rotting apple, is a bit much in the aroma. The bitterness is not too high but it still obscures the sweetness and other elements. My only regret is having bought a 4-pack. Still drinkable because, well, it’s still beer.

The Elk sausage and Raclette deserve better.

Raclette. It is somewhere between Swiss and Gruyère, and is supposed to be roasted or grilled for best enjoyment. Wegman’s, up here, has been carrying it lately.

Nice! Grilled Raclette is a beautiful thing, when I worked as a cheese monger we sold a ton for that purpose. Wonderful smelling cheese.

Tonight I am sampling Suarez family brewing and their Poets Walk barleywine. 10.6% ABV and aged for quite some time in barrels and also undergoing refermentation in the bottle. Beer was sent to me in a trade, but Im bad at tracking the sender, maybe @Xerlic ? Either way, thank you to my trade partner

I am sampling a cellar temp 375 ml bottle poured into a snifter. Ive had the beer for aabout 1.5 years
The beer pours a clear yet very dark mahogany with rich garnet highlights in the glass. A dense creamy beige head foams up about 0.5 cm and fades to a sturdy edging soon after the pour. Leaves some scattered lattice on swirls or sips.
Aroma is fruity , malty and a little funky. I get some brown sugar and some raisin notes with a little bit of a musty blanket note and definitely some pipe tobacco notes too. Not hoppy nor boozy at all. Interesting nose on this beer.
First sip reveals a very smooth texture with pretty full body and fine gentle carbonation. Texture is a little sticky on my palate with some light coating. The carbonation actually totally dissipates quickly if I hold the beer in my mouth. No boozy warmth on this one.
Flavor is very rich, lots of fruit with raisin and figs with some brown sugar and a bit of a cherry note comes through on the finish. Generally a pretty sweet beer, but definitely note cloying. Finish dries out a bit too, encouraging me to take another sip.
this is a complex brew that I am enjoying quite a bit, glad to have had the chance to taste this one!

I'm drinking a bourbon barrel-aged Hibernation Station from Trustworthy Brewing and HUDL brewing. This beer is the original Hibernation Station put into newly-drained bourbon barrels from Nevada H&C Distilling for a year. Unfortunately, Trustworthy is now closed. Got this from the one and only Tomas (@Resistance88 ) in a recent trade.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a nice dark brown with minimal head. The nose is full of bourbon, toffee, pine needles, figs, prunes, and some citrus peel.

The taste is awesome - bourbon, toffee, hops, vanilla, leather, figs, apple, oak, and a touch of citrus. Man, this is fantastic.
