Tonight Im digging into my cellar some to hit up another Barreled Souls beer. This is their ABC's 2.0 , Willet Bourbon barrel aged version. Beer is 12.1%

    onto my review:
Sampling a cellar temp 50 0ml bottle poured into a snifter. Beer was bottled on 11/16/2022 and was picked up at the brewery as part of bottle society grab 1.5 years ago. Bottle has been in my cellar since that time.
The beer pours a rich chestnut to mahogany color and almost no light passes through the glass when I hold it to a light source. A dense off white head of about 0.5 cm foams up and fades to a sturdy edge layer soon after the pour. this edging sticks around throughout the sampling and gives some scattered lattice when I swirl or take a sip.
Aroma on the beer is cinnamon toast, with some brown sugar and bourbon rounding out the nose. Cinnamon is sort of spicy not earth like I sometimes detect cinnamon. There is a little bit of toffee too and no hint of hops and not really boozy either. Pretty impressive for 12.1%
First sip reveals a medium body with very fine, gentle carbonation. Only faintest coating on the texture and this beer drinks pretty easy on the physical traits.
Flavor is some toffee and brown sugar with a bit of cinnamon. Some sweet bourbon comes in and general fruit note. The beer gets very sweet in the middle of experience. Sort of sweet fruity note that borders to candy like. Cinnamon lingers after the swallow with a little warmth. No hop character anywhere.
Easy drinker physically, but sweetness is a little much for me. Beer is fine and flavors work well but its too sweet. A bit of a miss on this one IMO.

Future Primitive Old No. 6 Barrel Aged American Barleywine 2023, 11% ABV. Blended from six years of BA barleywines. Pours reddish-brown with a half-finger beige head that left little lacing. Aroma is sweet stone? fruit, toffee, and bourbon. Taste is toffee, fruit, slightly sweet, quite bitter, some bourbon burn. Dry mouthfeel, overall excellent.

VSOJ by Revolution. Yes, I finally got to try this and WOW.

Much appreciation to @Luscious_Malfoy for sending this to me.
Pours a deep, mysterious cola brown in color. Mocha colored head pops up with a loosely packed fluff that rises around 2 inches before settling in at a diminutive ring that leaves the thinnest lace line, like a fine point marker. Low retention-fine for style.
Nose is glorious. A warm, gentle embrace of Bourbon comes in and graciously introduces the toffee, fig, and caramel. But there is so much more going on. Delicate, fruity barrel notes akin to brandy and smooth coffee. After warming a bit, a warm, not quite boozy, note that wafts between rye and an herbal, almost peppery, spice.
This is luxuriously decadent. Yes, a bit sweet but still complex. A warmly Bourbon-kissed delivery of toffee, caramel, and dates starts things off. But she is profoundly alluring. Mild char, coffee, and again some fruity notes that are deep and "barrely." A melange of Bourbon and brandy notes but in a very "wet staves" way.
Mouthfeel is just a tad heavier than many barleywine but amazing. The finish tamps back the sweet just a tad and makes room for a hint of wood on the end. Politely warm in its presentation of ABV.
Overall, so grateful to finally try this classic.

A wonderful American barleywine (nothing added) from @micada !! Old Man Split Foot from Beer Tree Brew. 11.3% ABV. Sent to me through the Barleywine/Stout BIF!

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a nice reddish brown with a thin layer of off-white head. The nose is really great on this one. Strawberry jam, apricot, raisin, watermelon, a touch of vanilla, and a wonderful layer of shortbread cookie.

The taste is a wonderful mix of toffee, raisin, plum, apricot, slight leather, an ever-so-slight note of citrus peel, spice, and oak. This is really well done. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and quite dry on the finish. More of the "American" barleywine actually hits on the aftertaste - this is where the hoppy notes come through.

Great beer! I'm thoroughly enjoying this one! Thanks so much, Eric!

One more new barleywine for me tonight. Oakpocalypse Now from Firestone. A barleywine aged in rye whiskey barrel and red wine barrels with French oak staves. Collab with Revolution. 11.8% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a nice dark brown with a reddish tint. The nose is toffee, red wine, biscuits, tons of rye, slight maple, oak. Definitely a fruity sweetness that comes through.

The taste is lovely. Caramel really comes through here. Rye, oak, raisin, vinous, bread, malts, vanilla, and plums. A jammy note is there as well. Really easy drinking!

El Segundo Old Jetty 2024 Whiskey Cask Barleywine, 13.1% ABV. Pours blackish-brown with a ring of brown bubbles that left no lacing. Aroma is whiskey and caramelized sugar. Taste is whiskey, roasted malt, dark fruit, brown sugar, slightly sweet, slightly bitter, some alcohol burn. Decent mouthfeel, overall outstanding. Seemed very 'warming'. Surprised it's an American Barleywine, tastes more like an English.

A great beer from @micada as part of the barleywine/stout BIF. This is Terre Riserva Teo Musso 2012 from Birra Baladin in Italy. An English barleywine aged in a variety of Italian red wines. 11% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a muddy red/brown with zero head. Still some good carbonation though. Bubbles rising throughout. The nose is dominated by notes of red wine. After some time in the glass, I get notes of vanilla, plums, rhubarb, oak, and a hint of lemon.

The taste is insane. It's bursting with flavor. Comes across as a still barleywine, which accentuates the flavors. Red wine is, again, the dominant flavor. Apricot, a slight sour candy note (like a sour patch kid but less sour), oak, and again a light vanilla flavor. This definitely brings up memories of a really old English barleywine - like a 20 year old Thomas Hardy's Ale. A bit of old leather books is there as well. Thanks so much, Eric! What a fun experience!

Having Love Lost at Sea from Buoy (yet another new brewery:slight_smile:) from @snaotheus via the barleywine etc bif. American barleywine aged in Westward Whiskey barrels for 12 months. 2023 vintage

This is hitting me just right tonight, not many out there like this these days. The ABV is reasonable, it isn't super sweet or hopped to hell, and and the barrels compliment rather dominate.

Lots going on here, tons of toffee for a base accented golden raisins, marshmallow, dark honey, light leafy, tea-like bitterness, fruitcake, vanilla, and more. The booze is coming across more as rum than whiskey somehow. The mouthfeel is full and bright. If ever there was a crushable barrel aged barleywine, it's this one. Thanks Ryan, this is a great one.

Many thanks to @Mikexw for sending this 2018 gem along in the Barleywine/Stout BIF #1 from Fall 2023.
I'm not big on aging any longer but i have to say the 2018 §ucaba edition is the best i have had. Toffee forward with some dark fruit from the malt base, and the barrel is imparting a lot of vanilla tannins these days. Leather and bourbon balance this out nicely.
    Cheers!

Bourbon County Barleywine from 2013. Compliments of @Resistance88 in a recent IP trade. Not a sound could be heard when I popped the cap. Pours a very murky brown.

The nose is burnt toffee, the inside of old leather hiking boots, boozy bourbon, slight vanilla, bright dark fruit, and a burst of malts.

The taste is actually really good! Very different from when it was fresh, but remnants are there. Much better than a lot of beers aged for 5 years. This is close to 12 years and still fantastic. Loads of caramel candy, bourbon, pipe tobacco, rye bread, graham cracker, apricot, raisin, and maybe a very small hint of metallic oxidation (but it's not impeding on the overall taste). So enjoyable! I wish they would release this again in the small bottles. I would pay $40 per 4-pack if I had to!

A big thanks to Tomas for handing over this bottle.

It's barleywine time courtesy of @snaotheus from the barleywine etc. bif. Prisoner at the Crossroads from Varietal. Quite an interesting name, I wonder what it means? Someone with paralysis by analysis at a critical juncture in their life? A reference to an old blues song?

Looks like this was brewed in 2021, aged in a blend of bourbon and rye barrels for 18 months, and bottled late 2022. There is an extremely satisfying lightly charred toffee and raisin foundation here. I also get some vanillin, Kings syrup, brown sugar, and prickly, rye whiskey goodness. The finish adds biting oak that is just a touch hot.

Based on other reviews, it seems that time has served to mellow this nicely. Very glad to have tried this, thanks Ryan!

Varietal and Single Hill are two of the Washington breweries that appear (to me) to have zero presence outside of Washington, that really seem like they deserve a lot broader recognition.

    Glad you enjoyed the experience!
