Has anyone used this tour service? Untappd is co-marketing three trips to Germany this summer but I can't find much about the company. It might be based in Germany, but I'm unsure of that. Any help available? Thanks.

The itinerary listed in the first link above in Todd's post looks to be well curated. It's a combination of the usual well known places and smaller gems in the countryside.

At the risk of the tour filling up, I went ahead and committed to going, and specifically on that trip. (Each of the trips are slightly different, although each also have some places in common.) Those small countryside breweries around Bamberg were one of the deciding factors for choosing that trip. I know that you've mentioned that your trips to Bamberg have included some small outlying breweries in the area, so did the brewery names that are mentioned ring any bells with you? (Eichhorn, Grunen Baum and Zehender)

If it’s the Eichhorn (acorn) brewery I think they're talking about, it’s good. Zehendner is maybe slightly better known as Mönchsambacher and is very very good. Don't know Zum Grünen Baum.

It's not.a bad itinerary at all IMO.

Those breweries mentioned above are sometimes mentioned in the FB page "Franconia & the Oberpfalz Beer Group". Some nice posts and info over there.

    Those places around Bamberg:
Eichhorn (which is Squirrel, acorn is Eichel) ist very good. All the beers I've had on the three visits have been lovely. Food is more on the order of Brotzeit, smaller plates with bread. Get the plum smoked beef, Zwetschgenbames, it's tasty. The front of the building has Schwarzer Adler (Black Eagle) painted on it. Previous brewery name, they have a 6% ABV beer named that.

Zehendner is the family name of the brewery in Mönschambach, so the beers are known as Mönschambacher. I've not been as the bus schedule is not forgiving. The beers at restaurants in Bamberg are excellent, so agreeing with @WhatANicePub. It is said those are best on gravity from the barrels at the brewery. I plan to finally get there in September.

Zum Grünen Baum hast a good reputation with my friends, but I've not been as it is not easy by public transportation. It is also known as Brewery Bayer, as Bayer is the family name. The last Craft Beer and Brewing has an article about that brewery on pages 34-35.

3 very good country breweries are included near Bamberg. 2 are not so easy to get to with public transportation which is a plus.

    Enjoy the trip.

Concur with the above notes. I have yet to make it to "Zum Grunen Baum," but have hit the others around Bamberg and the list is good. Zehender can be a pain to get to, but a bus should make it a good visit.

In Bamberg, Brauerei Spezial is my favorite location to sit and enjoy a rauchbier (more subtle than Schlenkerla) in the evening and all the others are great as well. Keesman makes a good pils and Mahrs is right across the street. It doesn't say where you will stay in Bamberg, but you can also go to the Schlenkerla for a rauchbier and just sit in the hallway and watch the antics of the tourists if you have time.

Forchheim has the "Walk of Beer" which you be able to walk depending on the available time. You can also get a postcard of the local Beer Queen at the tourist office. There are three remaining breweries in Forchheim along with the kellerwald. The most recent closure was the Brauerei Eichhorn, now brewing outside of town by the family that owns the Brauerei Hertl.

    Enjoy the trip!

Wow, great info. Thanks. I'll be chauffeured by the tour bus, so I'll be able to get to the two places that you haven't been. Report to follow in Sept.

Which is a plus as I said!

There is a bus that goes from Bamberg to Dorfleins and stops right in front of Eichhorn. That's how I've been there 3 times.

I already have one 3-day trip to Bamberg behind me about 10 years ago, and I think I was able to visit most of the places that I wanted to, Spezial being one of them. It looks like more places are in the BA database now, so a challenge exists. I think the itinerary allows only a half day free time during the three nights that we'll be there, but I'm going to visit some repeats as well as new-to-me places even if I have to stay out past my bedtime.

    Thanks for the great info.

Staying out past your bedtime won't really help as brewery taps tend to close down early in that part of the world (~10pm). It evens out because they open at 9 am too.

@PapaGoose03 if you were in Bamberg 10 years ago some things have changed and there are some new places

Mahr's has lost some of their mojo, but some friends said they are improving. Ten years ago Klosterbräu was almost dead, then bought by Kaiserdom and an influx of cash has turned that place around and it can be heaving on the weekend.

If you want to sample beers from around the area go to Zapfhahn or Eckerts.

New breweries are Sternla and Ahornla. Sternla is good, Ahornla wasn't up to the local quality a couple of years ago.

If you're coming down the hill from Wilde Rose or Special Keller you can grab a beer at Stöhrenkeller or Galerie. The later has gravity poured beer from Brauerei Sauer.

You guys are talking me into leaving the group tour and going rogue on my own!

I didn't know about the 'early' closing hours, but I did know about the early hour for opening because I had breakfast at a couple places, one of them being Klosterbräu. It was during the first few days of May when I was there and I was able to have their Maibock. To this day, that's the best Maibock that I've ever had. I'm happy to hear that that place was revived. It was pretty dead those two times we were there on that trip, so that I thought we were just there during off hours.

I loved the view from Special Keller but the place was fully reserved for the evening and they seated us if we promised to eat quickly and clear out. It was a crummy weather day so we couldn't even linger outside with a beer. We tried to go to Wilde Rose from there but it wasn't open for the season yet, or maybe for that day because of the weather - never did figure out why. So those are three places that I'd like to re-visit if I have enough time.

Thanks to both of you for your replies.

Wilde Rose doesn't open if there is a chance of bad weather. It can be sunny and if rain is predicted they are closed. It was sunny one day and the entry was closed, by the time we walked down the hill it was clouding up, then rain started, so we found shelter at Schlenkerla.
