Good day BAs! Thanks @Shanex for opening the bar! Good luck with your utility appointment @ChicagoJ - around here it's "We'll be there between 0800 and Xmas."

Today's New Breakfast Beer, thanks to @Whyteboar:

Indiana Joe from Gravel Bottom. Received from @Whyteboar in Barleywine and Stout BIF #2. 16 fl oz crowler. Received 26/02/25, reviewed 24/03/25 (Review 3481). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Final impression and summation: 4.25 Excellent local (for @Whyteboar) stout – we should all be so lucky! Lacks the harsh bitterness possessed by many coffee stouts – bitterness is present but is hardly harsh. This is a stout with hints of coffee, not coffee with traces of a stout.

    Rating 4.27, rDev +2.2%

Thanks for the kick off @Shanex . Not yet sprung in my neck of the woods. A bit of freezing rain and snow while at work last night. Fortunately, I was working in the Tug Hill region 40 miles from here, so no snow at home.

I like La Goudale. Thanks Shanex. Some nice smokey taste there. A lttle bit too strong and syruppy like to be a top go back to beer for me. How can be? All seems natural and balanced. The rice-malting?

    Not sure.

How would you classify this beer? Strong pale ale?

Pretty much a Bière de Garde which as a style originated in the North of France. Close style to a strong pale ale and Belgian ones we all know (Belgium is only few kilometers away from Lille/Risjel).

However I find classic bière de garde like that more crisp and dry than Duvel or Chouffe, delirium tremens etc… not for everyone but when fresh they’re pretty good.

Oh, interesting, will look into that. Unique style from North France? More west?
More dry than LaChouffe, I agree, for sure, But what if you compare to Omer? Or cuvee-des-trolls?
Duvel to me is another category to me because of the unique yeast culture.

[IMG] This one is new to me. Poured into a 16 oz Snulip glass canned on 3/7/25. Pours an attractive slightly cloudy orange with a 2 finger sticky slightly off white head that leaves thick rings of lace with excellent retention. 4.5

Aroma is pine, peach, candied tangerine, apricot, and a healthy whiff of grapefruit rind. 4.5

Taste follows oily pine, peach, tangerine, apricot, and grapefruit not over the top, but wonderfully balanced. 4.5

Mouthfeel is rather big, soft carbonation, maybe a tad dry, and at 9.2% massive flavor but still nice drinkability. 4.75

Overall I miss loving a big old DIPA and this one is excellent. I will be getting this one again soon. 4.5
