I'm back with a consecutive NBW, namely to show @Beersnake that even I can learn time and because no one has bestowed us with one yet.

NBW is about trying new beers and sharing with other BA'ers your thoughts. Detail us your thoughts on taste, smell, mouthfeel, and look so we can vicariously live through whatever treasuries you post.

Courtesy of @Roguer from BIF '25, can dated 12/4/24, batch 3, with appropriate FF glassware:

Pours black with hues of amber in the light. Head is on the thinner side and dissipates rather quickly leaving small cobwebs of lacing. Smells of faint cola and islay whiskey (think peat, smoke, iodine, bandaids). Taste is bourbon, cola, hint of honey, charcoal and some smokiness. Higher carbonation than I would have expected and thin in body, although in-line with the style. Finish is reminiscent of a smoky-cokey cocktail (Lagavulin 16 & Coke) if you ever had one with some welcomed bitterness. Drinks very easy for an 11%'er.

Have a good NBW and Friday evening. Thanks @Bishop for starting us off this week.

I was bloated after eating mexican food for lunch for the usual Friday lunch with my wife, so I was lying in bed and Finished Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt to let my stomach settle this afternoon, and now I am ready for more beer. The week went well for me, as I finally god started on a PsyD to help with my situations after waiting 4 months for VR state services to get back to me. Still hanging in there.

Toppling Goliath Pseudo Sue Nelson Sauvin Dry Hopped. Fantastic stuff. Aromas and flavors of big white grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pear, red apple, white grape/wine, passionfruit, melon, gooseberries, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine, wheat, cracker, bread, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Medium pine, citrus rind, woody, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and body; balanced creamy/grainy malts and sticky/resinous hop mouthfeel. Fairly crisp from lingering resin dryness, minimal lingering hop astringency. Bit of lingering hop burn/abv warmth after the finish. Refreshingly drinkable for a hazy, a ton of hop dankness/vibrancy of Nelson, with a nicely soft malt backbone. 4.31/5

Modelo Chelada Fresa Picante. Poor head retention and no lacing on a murky body. Aromas of strawberry jolly ranchers and light chili spice/salt. Taste follows with strawberry jolly ranchers, chili peppers, cracker, herbal, grass, peppercorn, pine, and salt. Medium pine/herbal bitterness, pepper spiciness, and fruit tang/tartness on the finish. Medium-high carbonation, light-medium body, and crisp/clean/refreshing finishing. Balanced grainy malt, sticky hop, fruit acid, and light salinity in mouthfeel. Lingering pepper heat after the finish that builds to good intensity through the glass. Quite a bit more pepper kick than the other fruit cheladas in the series, but just as refreshing if you like more spice. 3.78/5

Brewers notes: Our legendary imperial stout ages in not one, but two barrels--Tattersall rum and O'Shaughnessy bourbon, with a generous touch of vanilla on the finish.

    Received in bif imperial stouts & barleywines 2 from @Bishop , 16 oz can , 2024 edition

Chilled can arrived in a gold leaf box , poured into a snifter, dark motor oil, tin brown layer that settles to an island airing , fizzy carbonation thru the blackness

Aroma is vanilla, roast malts, bourbon, rum

Taste is bourbon, vanilla, dark fruits, rum soaked raisins

Mouthfeel is thick, syrupy, boozy without the heat , some sudsing

    Good beer

No canned on date. Poured into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint.

A: Pleasing slightly hazy bright gold with 1-2 finger white foamy head with decent retention and a thin band of lacing.

S: Very dank with lemongrass, weed, pine resin and light gooseberry and pineapple.

T: Flavor is aggressive and slightly abrasive with high bitterness drowning out a lot of the hop flavor. What comes through are slightly sour gooseberry, pine, lemongrass, honeysuckle, and lemon-lime.

M: Not the most pleasant due to extreme dryness in a very lean bodied beer. Bordeing on astringent finish.

O: Nesh is aggressive to a fault - high bitterness and super-dry feel is a bit overwhelming and scratches out the hops flavor that could be there.

Cheers @Bishop for starting us off

Westmalle Trappist Extra Belgian Pale Ale, 4.8% ABV; 3.89 overall

Pours a sparkling old with one finger+ of eggshell colored head. Stays effervescent, good head retention & lacing

S: Green bananas & cloves in abundance, hints of juicy fruit gum, nose fades as the beer warms

T: Follows the nose, plenty of pears, hints of lemon and a little dryness up front. Grassyness, pears and white pepper/coriander notes as this beer warms up, plus dryness, faint phenol notes. Finishes dry, grassy with pears & apple skins & just a little coriander

MF: Light/medium body, fairly lively carbonation, decent balance. Body thins a bit once warm

Drinks easy enough, nice delicate offering. Glad I got a chance to try this, but I prefer the heavy hitters from these guys more

Thank you to @Bishop for getting this party started!
Im Sampling one of the treats sent my way from @muchloveforhops3 in the Imperial Stout and barleywine BIF#2.
No Montana hits with this one, but still looks to be a tasty brew! Thank you for sending.

This is Funky Buddha Brewing out of Oakland Park, Florida and their Last Snow Porter, a 6.4% brew with coconut and coffee additive.

    onto my review:
Sampling a 12 oz can at cellar temp and poured into my snifter. No date stamp on the can that I can see.

The beer pours a rich coffee brown color with no light passing through the glass. A creamy beige head foams up about 1 cm and slowly fades to a sturdy surface covering. Nice dense lattice on sips and swirls.
Aroma is some roast coffee, dark chocolate and a little coconut note. No hop character here and not really boozy anywhere. ONly 6.4% so that checks out.
First sip reveals a medium to lighter body with fine, prickly carbonation. Texture is very smooth.
Flavor is dark chocolate and some roasted malts and then a big hit of candied coconut. This coconut lingers after each sip as well. I enjoy coconut in beers and am often let down, this one doesnt disappoint.
There is no hop balance and again booze is absent. This is a tasty coconut porter that is sweeter on flavor and more roasted on the nose. Glad to have tried this one.

Martin House brewing Thunder Crunch Sout with chocolate syrup, rice, caramel & lactose, 12.2% ABV; 3.23 overall

Pours a murked up chestnut/mahogany with fast falling mocha colored head. Zero head retention & lacing

S: Faint cocoa notes, not much else

T: Some caramel, chocolate, dryness & vanilla up front. Dryness, chocolate syrup & a little caramel once this beer is warm. Finishes with some chocolate milk notes & a little dryness & caramel. If everything else was on par with the flavor, this could've been a much better beer

MF: Medium-ish body, super low carbonation. Carbonation picks a little once warm, body thins out

Had hopes for this one, not horrible, just not good. Flavors seem okay, but the body is a mess along with the nose

    Happy weekend fellow beer enthusiasts!
(That’s another term for Advocate, right?)
No matter, I’m in the state of Colorado which has so many beers not in my home state of Michigan.
But when I’m here, I prefer to drink Colorado beers. This is one:
Took a chance on this as I have had a couple stouts recently with cinnamon that were pretty good. As in I could taste all the flavors, not just cinnamon.
This poured stout black and sported a light brown head which dissipated quickly but left a ring that stuck around most of the drink.
The taste does have the coffee and vanilla flavors which are almost, but not quite, overwhelmed by the cinnamon. The lactose is much more a feel than a taste, but it leaves no doubt this is a milk stout.
The feel is a little thinner than I expected, and it might be the cinnamon that provides the tingling sensation.
OA, it’s not that I don’t like cinnamon, I just think it’s overpowering. So while I’m glad to have tried it, and largely enjoyed it, probably won’t be buying any more.
    Cheers all! Back tomorrow.

2nd Beer to share and this one is courtesy of the illustrious @Resistance88 Thank you my friend! The beer is Urban Roots MellowWood Doppelbock out of Sacremento , CA. beer registers 8.0%.

    onto my review:
Sampling a cellar temp 16 oz can poured into my snifter, cause I didnt feel like grabbing the dimple mug. So here we go.
The beer pours a rich mahogany color with some ruby highlights on the edges of the glass. A creamy beige head of almost 3 cm foams up even on a gentle pour. this foam slowly fades to a sturdy surface covering and leaves some scattered lattice as it recedes down the glass. Surface roam remains throughout the sampling.
Aroma is rich and malty with toffee and dark bread mixing with figs and maybe cherries. Definitely fruitier on the nose than I would have expected, smells more like Aventinus than a regular doppelbock. I really enjoy the nose.
First sip reveals a medium body with very fine and gentle carbonation. Texture is smooth and this beer drinks very easy.
Flavor is toffee and more figs with hints of sweet fruit again. A bitey black pepper hit on the finish kicks in too. there is a lot of weizenbock quality here. Maybe its the purple can, but in a blind tasting Id call this a weizenbock for sure. Must be the yeast strain.
Anyway, Im enjoying this beer and very glad to have tried it, even if its not what I anticipated from the beer when I opened the can.

I never tried the Baltic Porter i sent you and i reslly wanted to get that to you for the Baltic tasting but life got in the way.
This one, however, i have enjoyed many times.
I tend to keep one in the fridge as a pre-beer before a big BA stout to warm the engine.

Lookin forward to your thoughts on whatever else i sent you! ( i forgot what i sent!)

Giddy Up! IPA from Highland Park Brewery in L.A.
Overall this is a highly drinkable hoppy brew that respects the limits of the human taste bud.

Tastes of peach, mango, and a squeeze of lemon, but not too tart. Deeply aromatic with ripe honeydew melon and peach fuzz. This is deeply fruity but restrained somewhat in the use of hops. The aftertaste is suitably bitter, but not abusive. The fruit is tangy and a little sweet, but mellow and pleasing.
