    Thursday here we come…

Drinking a new to me beer, and one I’ve never heard of before. Whiplash Fatal Deviation.

A barrel aged Imperial Stout hitting a solid 11% ABV.

This is a brewery from Dublin, Ireland…

A thick bodied, delectable stout which despite its double digit ABV drinks well and easily.

It sure was a bit on the steep side but not a single penny was wasted. Really good.

Good day BAs! Thanks @Shanex for opening the bar this Thor's Day!

Today's New Breakfast Beer, all hail @bbtkd for this excellent brew:

Egg Pie from Covert Artisan Brewing. Received from @bbtkd 27/03/25 in a LIF associated with BS BIF #2. 16 fl oz can. Reviewed 03/04/25 (Review 3491). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Final impression and summation: 4.5 Normally I’d deduct 0.25 point from the final score since the can is undated, but since the can is labeled “2024 Vintage”, I’ll let it slide this time. Overall, a very good BA imperial stout – good flavors and aromas well-blended to near-perfection – this is one I’d love to have available locally. Looks like it’s back to South Dakota as this summer’s beer trip extends! Thanks Tom!

    Rating 4.45, rDev -0.7%

You're welcome! Covert recently closed their downtown taproom and pulled everything back to their 'brewery' which is in an industrial park garage/shop. This summer they're going to add a taproom there. They've had some great stouts. I'm suspecting the brewer is a BA, or at least a lurker, because last time BA added styles, he came out with examples of them. Egg Pie is no longer available, but I hope they add it to their lineup. Give me a shout if you're going to be in the Sioux Falls area.

Assuming my usual luck, they won't be open yet if we get there, but will have a "silent opening" the day after we leave. I have no need to go back to Sturgis, Mt. Rushmore, the Black Hills, Wall's Drugs, Crazy Horse memorial, etc., but I did marvel at all the petrified logs throughout the region.

    Greetings, Beeradvocate!!!

I've been off the site since 2019, but had a wave of nostalgia wash over me, and I've decides to re-review a lot of the old school craft beers from my youth. Here's the Minnesota classic, Summit EPA.

    Re-review 4/3/2025
    Score
    Look 4.75, Smell 4.75, Taste 4.75, Feel 4.75, Overall 5.0

Summit EPA is the classic Minnesota craft beer. It's the beer I remember my aunt and uncle drinking in the 90's, and the one I yearned to try for years in the early 2000's, but had to wait as I was living in Germany at the time.

Summit EPA pours a clear copper color with a frothy head that sticks around, and leaves great lacing. The aroma is very balanced between a toasty, biscuity malt base, and a layer of floral English hops. The taste leans a bit more towards the malt side of things than the aroma, but there's still nice balance. Along with the toasty, biscuity notes there's a little caramel. The flowery hops cut through the sweetness, and there's a nice lingering bitterness in the finish. I wouldn't call the bitterness mild or strong; I'd call it perfectly appropriate. The mouthfeel has a velvety texture, and a style appropriate lower level of carbonation.

Overall, over the past twenty years I've drank thousands of Summit EPA'S in a hundred places, under dozens of circumstances. In the mid-2000's, when craft beer was still in its youth, Summit EPA was the one good beer you could find in nearly every liquor store or halfway decent bar in Minnesota. It might not always have been fresh, but it was there. As time went on, and good beer became more popular in the early 2010's, you could still find it everywhere in the Twin Cities only now it was always fresh. I still see it on tap in most places. The number of craft taps it shares space with has grown, but it maintains its space. It still drink it regularly. I'm early middle-aged now, and often find myself yearning nostalgic for the old, intimate days of craft beer's youth. Summit EPA reminds me of family gatherings, watching good football teams at Mortimer's Bar, and bad one's at home, old friends who've long since parted ways, old apartments when I was new in town, and craft beer ethos before the bandwagon.

    Original Review 7/18/2005
    Score 4.03
    Look 4.0, Smell 3.5, Taste 4.0, Feel 4.5, Overall 4.5

Pours a clear amber color with a small white head. Aroma is sweet and fruity, but not very strong. The taste thankfully is fuller than the smell. Big and fruity with a mildly hoppy aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with ample carbonation. Overall, this is a good beer. It is always a top notch standby, as it is carried by most drinking establishments in the Minnesota area.

Good morning BAs! Errands run and kitchen cleaned, it’s coffee time - “Double Cup”, an imperial coffee stout, by Common Roots Brewing Company, South Glens Falls, NY:

No canning date (2024?). Poured at 54.3°. Coffee and chocolate nose/taste. The 14% abv is well hidden. A bit on the thin side, which makes this impy stout poundable and dangerous. I buy this beer every time it pops up on Tavour.

Another steamy, sunny hot day forecast…at least there is a breeze. We should top out in the upper 80s this afternoon. Cheers and have a great day y’all!

It is, I found this germ in a proper beer store as opposed to the supermarket. 7€ is a bit of money but no regrets. Cheers!
