By beer with bite, I don't mean a high alcohol content beer. Back in the late 90s, I occasionally purchased those magazines like Maxim, FHM, & Stuff. One of those featured an Asian kid who would review certain food & drink items in every issue. One month he reviewed a beer, & I'm pretty sure it was Meister Brau. I thought it was hilarious when he closed the review by saying “goes down like razor blades” That's when I remembered that my friends & I camped out one night back in the late 80s. Since we were all under age, we found somebody to buy us a case of beer. I'm 99% certain it was Meister Brau & the more I thought about it, I remembered that it went down really hard. That's what I'm looking for, but I haven't had any luck. Does such a beer still exist ? I've tried a lot of different brands, but none of them are what I'm looking for. The most recent recommendation was PBR, but that failed as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Help us a little more - you mentioned Meister Brau and PBR, so are you looking for only a light lager for the style?
Thanks for the reply. I wish I could explain it better. I just want a beer that actually stings the inside of your mouth & throat a little bit. Seems like every beer I've drank consistently over the past 20 years has zero fizz/sting whatsoever & other than the alcohol content, is as smooth as water.
Statute of limitations is probably expired but sounds like you and the reviewer had a good shot at a successful lawsuit against the now-defunct Miller Brewing Co. over what sounds like defective bottles or cans of Meister Brau Beer. Glass or aluminum shards?
How about a beer brewed with hot peppers? Habanero Sculpin is one I tried and it hit me hard in the back of my throat.
When I first started drinking beer at a youthful age (late teens) I had a difficult time downing it. Guys I knew could chug beer like water -- I just couldn't drink big gulps because it was too harsh to me. 50 years later and I have no trouble getting the beverage down. Just my theory, but I think I had to get used to the carbonation -- and maybe that's what you remember and have grown accustomed to as well.
The way you are describing it, it sounds like you are looking for a beer with plenty of carbonation still in the liquid (although that might not be what you are actually after). Drink straight from the can/bottle and don't pour your beer into a glass. I'm guessing you might already do that though. (I'd rather pour my beer into a glass to release the carbonation, but to each their own.) On a different note - give Sierra Nevada Pale Ale a shot. It has a light green label/packaging. It won't take you back to Meister Brau, but chasing that memory might not give you what you are really searching for anyway.
Is it still around? Man that was a wild beer. Burn like hell… and I’m not even a “mayonnaise is spicy” weakling.
Thier web site says it's available in 16oz and draft. It's been a few years ago since I had it. Once was enough for me.
