That's really cool. I had never heard of Zoigl beer until I read about it over a year ago in a piece written by a beer wroter I follow. Wasn't sure if Good Word's belonged on this tread because of the ingredients but oh well. I wasn't sure I was going to like the unfiltered nature of it but I liked this version. Sterling turned out to be a good choice. I wouldn't think Cluster would be though. Thanks for the video and hope the homebrew turns out great! Cheers!

I did see that today when doing some research on it. I think Schilling did too. Check out that video @JackHorzempa posted.

Now here is an example of what @JackHorzempa mentioned earlier in the thread. I picked this up yesterday (I did not have my Little Orphan Annie decoder ring on me). I knew it was bottled some time in 2024 just not sure what month. Took a gamble. Weihenstephaner Kristallweizen is normally a solid, reliable beer. This one was off. Had little hops presence to it and an odd aroma/flavor I have not noticed in it previously. Turns out this was bottled July 23, 2024. This definitely sat too long (not refrigerated) and sadly, there are several bottle on the shelf with similar date codes. Gambled and lost. :joy:

Sorry for the bad pick. Just couldn't get the lighting to work out.

Sorry to read that. Unfortunately at my local beer retailers the German brewed beers are often too old. My personal 'strategy' is to mostly purchase US craft brewed German style beers in order to obtain fresh products. Plus my local craft breweries make high quality German style beers (e.g., Pilsners, Helles, etc.).

    Cheers!

That's always the best route. I normally do the same. One of my local breweries just made a Kristallweizen, so I thought I would take a chance since the Weihenstephaner is the only other I've had before and I wanted something known to compare. I can usually find something can/bottle much fresher but this particular store is getting notorious for old, unrefrigerated stock.

Nice! I've never had DAB. I don't think I've ever seen it anywhere around here, not even in the handful of German restuarants we have here.

Ayinger Maibock. Fantastic beer. Sweet and complex!

In about 1970, I stumbled onto Dortmunder Ritterbrau draft light and dark. Then the Dortmunders were finely balanced, somewhere between the malty Bavarian lagers and the hop forward Becks. I preferred Ritter over DAB. We stocked up when Fedmart brought in stubby bottles of Ritterbrau at bargain prices. Sadly, the Ritter brewery closed and I believe the brand is just a local minor label.

Hey, had never heard of this beer before. Did a little research and found supposedly it was only available in kegs in the states. Where did you find it in cans?

Ayinger Maibock, an excellent bier! If you’re ever in Munich and have a half a day take the 40 minute train ride to the town of Aying. It’s then a 15 minute walk to the Biergarten. It’s well worth it for the food and great bier.

Ayinger would definitely be high on the list to visit if ever in Germany.

I visited Germany when I was in highschool (about 30 years ago). I didn't know much about beer then, but I would love to go back with my current experience to enjoy it all over again. Ayinger would be on the top of my list! Love everything I've tried from them.

It's in the US in limited quantities. Go to the Merchant du Vin website's beer finder and see if it's available to you nearby.

Apparently a couple stores near me have it. I didn't realize they had that on their website. Thanks!

This year I bought four packs at two different shops in northeast Ohio. First time I’ve seen it in cans. Cheers.

Scored some Ayinger Maibock thanks to a tip from @PapaGoose03! The only other imported Maibock I've had was Hofbraü's. It's been many years since I've seen it around but I recall it was outstanding. Prost!

Hofbräu Delicator Doppelbock, which seems to be the current favorite for Doppelbocks, so I will give it the workout.

Handsome clear and dark amber-brown brew with ample foam in the snifter. Pleasantly sudsy on the tongue. Modest roasted aroma. This is perched between sugary and sharp, but the burnt sugar and roasted grain give it some complexity. Sweet but quite sharp as well. Raisins and caramel with that dark slightly charred finish. Overall, a classic of the style and quite interesting to sip. From the 11.2 oz bottle purchased on the West Coast. Apparent "best by" date is 10/07/2025.
