Currently drinking a Chinooker'd from Lawson's. Mighty fine beer. Don't recall other brews with this hops. Any recommendations?
Yep, Stone still uses Chinook in a lot of beers, but probably makes up less of the hops in those beers than it did back in the day. AG, Stone IPA, and the original Ruination are the only beers with Chinook that I can think of off the top of my head. I think Celebration uses it for bittering.
So then we’re talking about the hops, and not the salmon, Native American tribe (and their language), helicopter, wind, or dog breed? In that case I’ll go with Stone IPA and SN Bigfoot
Cause they’re not fruity tasting…but to answer your question not many do anymore. Locally, Tonewood Brewing still uses quite a bit of chinook; in at least 5-7 of their beers. A few others locally, Yards IPA uses chinook, so does Troegs Perpetual; I’m pretty sure heady uses chinook too but obviously that is top secret information I’m sure there’s more I could think of but just off the top of my head those are a few more widely available ones. and ps…chinookerd is one of if not the greatest IPAs, but you know, that’s just my opinion I was so happy it finally saw distribution again.
Do you happen to know specifically how Tonewood uses Chinook in their beers? Classically (i.e., in decade(s) past) Chinook was mostly used to bittering. Do you think Tonewood uses Chinook for flavor/aroma additions? Cheers!
as far as my palate is concerned Arrogant Bastard hasn't changed one bit. Guess Chinook doesn't play nice with all the manchildren who like sweet beers if it isn't used much.
I would venture to say mostly for bittering in my experience. Every one, but some more than others, carry that very distinguishable piney tingly biting bitterness. For reference, if you want to check out the database: chilly bin, nevergreen, still night, space jazz, improv, and rift. I may be forgetting one or two but that’s a good few right there.
Well, AB is pretty sweet, it's just balanced by the bitterness. And it is fruity... but the fruit is raisins. It's a beer for actual adults. The type of people that were astounded by red grapefruit when those became available.
Not sure if they still make it or how well it’s distro’d but I remember Full Pint made a beer called Chinookie.
Yep, that beer is still available. On tap today at the brewery's taproom: https://www.fullpint.beer/OnTap Cheers!
Elysian Space Dust and Sierra Nevada Bigfoot are probably my top two. I have also been thoroughly enjoying the 6 pack of Rad Little Thing that I purchased last week.
