Greetings, I am an American refugee that lives here in the Alps. Retired from the Army here in 2002. Was stationed here in Europe since the 1980’s. I have great views of the mountains and a home bar in the basement.

From 2009-2015 I was one of the German moderators at Ratebeer (aka Bierkrug). I stick to local beers pretty much now a days. I like my soft Bavarian beers. Not much of a craft beer person and don’t like the Ice Cream parlor flavored beer that they produce. The whole IPA hype thing drives me crazy. And if you try to pass something off as beer that tastes like aging Pine-Sol that was run through a used bong left over from Woodstock and tell me its one of the highest rated beers in the world, I don’t care it will still get a one rating.

If you can get by all of those quirks I am told I am a pretty good person. I like to tell old stories in my bar. I love history, cruising through the Alps on my scooter and metal detecting.

Welcome aboard! Opinionated, cantankerous geezers are what make this site great! Always interesting to talk to folks from different countries.

Look forward to seeing you around the virtual bar :beers:

PS I love my 100IBU Pine-Sol brews :sunglasses:

Welcome to Beer Advocate. I was also on Rate Beer, but not as active especially the past few years.

RB was a great resource for European beers and places. I hope you and others can increase exposure on this site, and enjoy your stay here.

Hope to see you around on the message boards. I can typically be found in The Var with the daily WBAYDN threads and weekly New Beer Weekend tastings.

Nice write-up, @Bavarican. Welcome to BA. I think our paths have crossed in the forums somewhere already, so it's great that you're already digging in. Explore the site to discover the features that you like, and hang around as much as you like.

Welcome to BA and please help educate we Americans about some of the 'nuances' of German brewed beers.

The most popular (e.g., regularly stocked) German brewed beers at my local beer retailers are the 'big' boys (e.g., Warsteiner, Bitburger, ...) but there are some beers from the smaller breweries (e.g., Ayinger, Andechs, etc.). Unfortunately many German brewed beers are quite old and not in prime form.

    Prost!

P.S. Other 'big' boy brews (e.g., Beck's, St. Pauli Girl) have German branding but are actually brewed in the US. There are not my preferred 'German' beers but I typically find them in fresh(er) condition.

I am glad to be here and I think that I will fit right in. I plan on adding and updating local beers and places in my area. My county has 9 breweries/brewpubs only 5 of them were listed here. I have already added the other 4. More to come.
