Doug from Cycle Brewing posted on their social media that he has decided to close the taproom. This is a bummer for me as Cycle was a big part of my craft beer journey and I've always been a fan of theirs. That said, I suppose it isn't surprising. A brewery heavily focused on large format BA beer, a taproom with presumably very expensive rent in a downtown area, and near zero focus on hospitality. The quality of the beer was always high and when the infection issue arose Doug did right by everyone and always stood behind his product. I'll miss them.
What a bummer. I'm not a local but I have been having their BA bottle sets sent to me for many years running now. If they stop making them completely, I will miss those beers even though I don't love the large format.
He was cagey on this. They still have their warehouse space and are still sitting on a lot of barrels and beer. Stated he may have a small retail space at the warehouse space at some point, but it feels as though he will sell off what he can then move on from the business. That's just how I understood it though.
I just found out about this today and it feels like the end of an era. Tomorrow is the last day for the taproom so get over there if you can. They're doing 12 bottles for $200. It's like a beer week haul except sad.
If this post was made in 2016 it would have had 300 responses instread of 6 - end of an era indeed . Still have a Pegs/Cycle BA day glass somewhere I'll queue up for a pour one of these days.
I was in Tampa / St Pete last year and got to visit Cycle and bought a T shirt. I’ve had many of their big pastries at bottle shares over the last decade. Great stuff for those that love the style (I know it’s polarizing in the Beer Advocate community) and sad to see one of the top Pastry stout makers in the country close up shop.
What's weird is that Wandering Monsters up in Cincy just dropped a Cycle collab bottle earlier this month: https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=869353206023964&set=a.225776553714969
Looks like Cycle is not gone after all. Angry Chair’s TBBW Sharing is Caring event advertised Cycle’s 2026 beer week bottles being available for purchase. https://www.instagram.com/p/DT3Ui2KAc6b/?igsh=ZTZsYTNlem14MXJy
There's this post on the Cycle IG at the very end of last year about a "5 Cases" project from Doug https://www.instagram.com/p/DS5K392lYUZ/?igsh=MXg2ZDR1cmxqY3hmcA==
When the taproom closed, he still had a bunch of beer in barrels at his off-premise barrel house. I expected there would be some form of release to clear those out. Still don’t expect anything beyond that but who knows.
