Probably the Hamms one......I think.....but I've done a good job of wiping my memory of that swill, except for the price.......

As I've mentioned before, the German brewers are OK with only calculating their variable costs and not the TAC (total absorption costs) of a product. Add to that the lack of elasticity in the market and you get inexpensive beer.

Side note...German beer consumption was down 10% in March (YOY)...compared to 2024 (JAN-MAR) down 6.8% from last year alone. A true free fall.

They are not profitable anymore - or at least, not as much as they used to. German breweries have very big problems now, because their domestic market is shrinking and shrinking due to change of demographics. Let's just say that "new Germans" are not so beer-loving.

To stay in business, they are competing with price. Some of breweries with 300+ years of heritage went out of business actually.

Another issues is companies like Inbev and Schöngrubber buying up some many of the breweries. Look at the Oktoberfest beers. The only two not owned by bigger international coorperations are Augustiner which is private family owned and Hofbrau which the State of Bavaria owns.

Between the aspect of "lack of elasticity in the market" and "true free fall" being in the brewing business in Germany must absolutely suck right now.

How is the German beer industry responding? Are there untapped export markets out there that can make these German businesses economically viable?

    Prost!

You may not have noticed things locally (yet?) but as @einhorn posted above:

"German beer consumption was down 10% in March (YOY)...compared to 2024 (JAN-MAR) down 6.8% from last year alone. A true free fall."

A declining customer base is not 'good news' for the overall German beer industry. And I suspect that even smaller, local German breweries will not experience zero impacts here.

    Cheers!

P.S. And a declining beer industry is not just a Germany thing. I got together with some buddies yesterday at a local craft brewery taproom and I heard lots of non-good news about local craft breweries (e.g., decisions to not expand per planning, head brewer fired (to reduce costs), etc.).

I've been away from the industry for a while, so I am not very well informed. My gut feel tells me that the export market is likely tapped out. Expansion has gone to just about everywhere, and I think that the HLs that were going to Russia are a big part of that decline due to sanctions.

From what I've seen, many breweries are getting deeper into non-alcoholic offerings, which makes sense IMO long term.

Non-alcoholic as is NA beers? Do you happen to know how big the NA beer market is in Germany?

Have any of the breweries produced beyond beer products? A few years ago Hard Seltzers were a 'thing' in the US. I suppose it still is?

    Cheers!

P.S. I suppose the 'new shiny thing' of beyond beer products in the US is RTD drinks?

NA beer is availible here but not widely used. What is a big thing here and has been for a very longtime is what is called a Radler. It is Helles beer mixed with Lemon soda, lemonaide or in the last 15 years lemon juice. It is more of a summer drink and premade in bottles. There are somemore variations of this like Banana Weizen which is a Hefe mixed with Banana juice. and anothe thing that came out is what is called a Großmaß.

    And another https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJZtAoy-02k

And even worse a Schneemaß https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzyMRLS5D5I

There are more, many more, one even has eggs and roast pork. Not that any of this stuff is anything that I would drink. But you did ask. :grimacing:

Outrageous beer prices? Any beer sold by Vons at their SoCalif stores…all the time. Recently they had a good price advertised for one craft beer, but there was no product on the shelf after day 1.

It's both beer mixed beverages and non-alcoholic products. Just a few examples

Outrageous beer prices? If you haven't noticed the price of just about anything has gotten more expensive.

Today I went the Feneberg grocery store today. Franziskaner Weissbier was normally €17.99 for a rack of 20x500ml bottles. It was on sale for €11.99 or about .52 cent a bottle. As far as local beers go the most expensive normally is Adventinus for €22.99 a rack. Food in general is about 45% cheaper here. Because most products are made locally. This is one of the reasons that I live here. Now we have our issues to like gas runs about 7$ a gallon here. I when for 6 years without a car because I did not need it.

Beyond gasoline prices, how much do you pay for overall energy? For electricity, natural gas, etc.?

And what are your costs for insurance: car, home, etc.?

    Cheers!

Well, this is a very deep subject. My electric bill is about 90 Euros a month. We have a fairly large place with two fringe’s and 2 freezers. Internet 1000 speed, home phone, cable and two cell phones run about €80. Taxes on my take home pay run at about 26% but that includes Heath care, long term disability, unemployment and social security for both me and the wife. The Germans do not tax my military pension. The US does but I get most of it back at the end of the year. My disability from the VA neither tax.

Car insurance for full coverage was about €750 this year it goes down even year as well. The motorbike for labiality runs about €90 a year. Personal insurance runs about €50 and home runs about €90 a year.

$82.99 AND it includes artificial flavors??? What the bloody fuck!

Of course I would probably avoid this at $1 per can because I dislike marshmallows.

I basically never buy Mexican beer because I prefer to avoid corn. Is $1.17 a can considered "outrageously expensive?" If so, is the average Mexican less than 75 cents each?
