Destihl Brewery Deadhead Imperial IPA ( West Coast Style ). 9.0% ABV; 4.07 overall

    Canned almost 4 months ago

Pours an effervescent & slightly chill-hazed gold with 2 fingers of fluffy ivory colored head. Stays effervescent, drops bright. Stellar lacing & very good head retention

S: Bready, lemony notes, probably the one aspect of this hindered by age. Cakeyness once warmed up

T: Bready, grassy, some tangerine & lime up front. Pine surfaces once this beer warms up along with cakey dryness/sweetness, grapefruit. Finishes pretty piney, a little dry, but cakey notes & grapefruit too

MF: Medium body, restrained carbonation, very good balance for the style

Not bad considering the age, plenty drinkable, would pull the trigger on this again if fresher & maybe even if not

Got around to cracking this one after a longer than anticipated afternoon... and I find I don't have much to say or a good idea of how to rate.

Look is a hazy orange-tinted gold with a strong white cap. Smell is reasonably citrusy with some resin. Taste is about the same - up front with a strong dose of bitterness, followed by the citrus and resin. Quite a smooth and pillowy one. Full and well-carbonated.

It's not like I don't like these, but I think I'm still at the point of preferring something a little less bitter. It's a fine and almost random line sometimes.

Happy Saturday, got some other new things to try and attempt a review at some point, mostly localish. Was good and stayed away from the pricy stuff this time... Keep thinking of all the beers I haven't had in a looong time, whether that is because of price, availability, or simply neglect. It is a long list sometimes. Thinking of getting tickets to some more events this year, including a saison fest in a couple of weeks, because saisons are cool. Meh.

Oh right, I stopped at the small shop first and you should see the kinds of wacky things they conjure up... like a whole rack of Black Ops from 2012 and 2013, an Orpheus saison from 2020... like... where did these things come from? Did they dig them out of storage? They have too many old things. Sad to say, I am trawling shops enough now to have a sense for what is current.

Hazelnut Weekend by Prairie Artisan Ales

Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout with Toast Coconut, Cacao Nibs, Toasted Marshmallow Flavor and Hazelnut Coffee

It has been a very long time since my last Praire beer BA. I grabbed this one on a whim with a Total Wine gift card. I figure shoot I like Hazelnut and a good Nutella snack right..well I am happy to report that this one delivers on just that promise

The flavors are rich with intense Nutella spread and Ferraro Rocher Candy. I get some underlying box raisin, house blend coffee and booze soaked oak. Not much of the coconut to me really. It is sweet at first and almost maple syrup like but well balanced overall and in the finish. I am enjoying this one much more than the recent KBS versions. Probably the best hazelnutted Impy stout I have experienced to date. Cheers :beers:

This beer has been eyeballing me at the local grocery store ever since we moved to VT some 5yrs ago. My news aggregator recently delivered me a story claiming this is one of the "best unknown" IPAs. So, I figured, might as well give it a try. Thoughts? A lot going on but, is good.

    On tap at the brewery.

This beer is a nice clear golden color. This beer kicked the keg, but there is no head in it.
The nose is very malty. There's lots of grain, biscuit and malt hitting my nose.
Flavor- very malty. Honey like grain up front. Biscuit, malty.
Nice full body. Very clean feeling. Smooth.
Very tasty and fun to drink.

Be back for more when I get home.

New weizenbock in my glass today:
Brauerei Michael Plank's Heller Weizenbock • 7.9% ABV • no dating

Good beer, but I prefer their other weizenbock called the "Dunkler Weizenbock." This one is drier and spicier with clove and allspice leading the flavors. It's still a solid brew, super easy to sip for so big a beer with a mouthfeel that is arguably a dead center middleweight with plenty of carbonation ... easy to sip, easy to quaff and perfect IMO.

    Official review:
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/5943/36326/?ba=Premo88#review
    3.83 (-3.3% rDev)

If the sweeter banana flavors would open up just a hint, it'd be a 4.0 beer for me. As it is, I'm still enjoying it very much.

FWIW, here's my review of the brewery's other weizenbock:

Hefes are such a great warm weather beer style to me.

I’ve liked reading your slew of European beers over the past few weeks.

Why thank you ... very kind of you to say.

Hefes *are* a great warm weather beer. In fact, they're generally not among my favorite styles, but I knew the hot weather was coming our way here in Houston, so I grabbed a handful a few weeks ago. They've been quite enjoyable.

    Cheers!

Clear, pale yellow pour; darker gold in the cup; no discernible carbonation yet a thick, white, long-lasting head, dense and semi-creamy. Cereal grain scent; wheat cracker. The flavor follows along the lines of the smell; funeral, balanced hop bitterness offsetting a mild, grainy sweetness. Medium body rounded; gently sweet.

    A really nice imported pilsner

Greenhouse Aleworks Monstera Hazy Pale Ale, 5.0% ABV; 3.71 overall

Pours a very effervescent & super-hazed gold with a thumb of eggshell colored head. Stays hazed, above average head retention & very good lacing

S: Green melon, white grapes, nose picks up once this beer is warmer

T: Follows the nose, some tangerine flavor Strips chewing gum & dryness up front. More of the same as this warms up, a little leafy hop as well. Finishes grassy with pomelo & some dryness & white grape

MF: Medium body with slight carbonation, decent balance. Not really creamy carbonation, closer to flat

Drinks easy enough, just doesn't deliver the goods

    Warpigs Raze the Dawn
12oz canned on 12/30/24 poured into a tulip pint glass at fridge temp, no ABV listed on label. The beer pours very dark brown with minimal highlights and medium brown colored head. The aroma is spicy with cinnamon and hot pepper leading the way and a hint of cocoa on the finish. The taste is semisweet cocoa and spicy pepper with the cinnamon coming in late. Minimal bitterness. The feel is medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, one of the nicest Xocotlatl inspired stouts I've had in a while.

Extra Quadruple from Hoppin' Frog. 10% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a very dark brown with minimal head. MUCH less head than a quad from Belgium. The nose is fantastic and hits all the great traditional quad notes. Tons of malts, toffee, brown sugar, some spice, and raisin.

The taste is fantastic. Creamy toffee, maple, Belgian yeast, candied sugar, slight cinnamon, figs, and loads of malts. It's definitely similar to Belgian quads, but also quite different in a few ways. This one is a tad sweeter and candy like.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a sweet candy aftertaste. Good beer overall.

    Greetings, fellow NBWers,

Today it's sunny and hot day in Spokanistan. 87°F at the moment. I'm currently sitting at the Red Wheel, awaiting a recently ordered burger. The beer in my glass is a Bodhizafa, but that's not a new beer to me.

Last night (this morning, really), after work, I popped open a hazy TIPA from Whistle Punk:

One of the best PNW hazies I've ever had, and the high abv is virtually undetectable, so it's downright dangerous!

DAB Export from Dortmunder Actien Brauerei

Poured a 500ml can dated 13/03/25 into a pilsner glass. A big fluffy white head on a clear gold. The head diminishes to a thick layer.

Mild floral hop in the nose. Tastes of bready malts. Cracker. Slightly sweet. Well balanced. A very mild but distinct hop finish.

The mouthfeel is very smooth. Medium body and carbonation. overall a well made Export lager.

From the awesome BA @bbtkd from a LIF via the NBW Imperial Stout/Barleywine BIF#2

White Elm Brewing ( If ever in the neck of the woods, a visit is in order! ) Champurrado BA Imperial Stout, 13.0% ABV; 4.31 overall

Pours an effervescent chestnut/mahogany with 2 fingers of mocha colored head. Head drops quickly, some head retention & lacing

S; Cinnamon, vanilla, some chiles on the edges, cola notes

T: Follows the nose, plus cocoa & pepper heat up front, some Baker's Chocolate & dryness, just a touch of barrel. Pepper heat picks up along with dark chocolate, cocoa, cinnamon & vanilla, some barrel & just a kiss of booze as this beer warms up. Finishes with some oaky notes, Chille heat, dark chocolate, cola, plus vanilla, leafy hops& plenty of cinnamon

MF: Medium body, dialed back carbonation, warming. Carbonation picks up a little once warm, helps drive the flavors

Great drinkability, the Chille heat really helps reign in the cinnamon which can just flat out ruin a beer for me. I could've done with a little less, but a minor gripe
