Gigantic Royal Rosarian Lager is a tasty maibock.

I briefly thought about opening a Heater Allen Lenz Bock and doing a side-by-side comparison, but this Game 2 between the Oilers and Panthers deserved my full attention.

Well Bock season is over. but you could say Bock season is year round. I did not chase bocks this year like I usually do. Not many new dark dunkel style bocks in my area that I haven't had before. Most of them are good but not great. Plus I have somewhat replaced bocks with English style barelywines. I did drink some local Maibock's recently that were solid.

One of the standouts this was Triple Debaucherye Barrel Aged Doppelbock from McFleshman's in Appleton, WI. This year was the first time I've had it. It was deep, rich and heavy but easy to drink at the same which I found to be odd. The ABV was well hidden. Smooth and slightly sweet. Mild barrel. Some dark fruit and caramel with a hint of rye.

A beer that I hit hard was Lakefront Barrel Aged Honey Bock. I drank 4 six packs so far. It's malty, thick, very sweet with plenty of honey. I found this one was best blended at 25% bock and 75% Central Waters 4 or 5 year Barley Wine. What you get is a nice honey barleywine. The bock adds sweetness, malty thickness and honey. The BW adds stronger barrel and dark fruit. The blend makes the beer more complex. This one was good but I think the previous Brewer's Reserve Honey Bock was better.

Honorable Mention: Garphish Back to Bock in Bethel MN

Of course Northbound Brew Pub doppelbock in Minneapolis is good as usual.

It's a benchmark for the style, and rightly so.

Such a good beer; malty and slightly sweet, mild fruitiness, just enough hops for balance. One of my favorite OMB beers!

    Schwendl Heller Bock

Spicy aroma with lemon and a green leafy nose. This is strong and clear with the usual Maibock malty taste. Mildly sweet but not as sweet as is all too common in this style. Hints of plum with cookies. Tangy and somewhat alcohol tasting but entirely sippable. Overall it's a better than average Pale Bock. Best By date is 19.02.26.

Seems like more Bock beers in evidence lately, along with the Festbiers. Here is the old school Ayinger Weizenbock.

Aroma is all clove and banana. It's very sweet which makes the spice even harden to swallow. Taste is honey, booze, and candy. Wonderful creamy mouthfeel, though. Perhaps this is a textbook example of a Weizenbock, but it is not one I want to drink again. Unless, of course, I'm in some jolly place in East Germany with something fresh and fatty with saurkraut to wash the stuff down with.

@mactrail -- Ayinger's Weizenbock is available year-round, so your local distro probably added more German styles for the season. I just hope that means it's fresh for you, so many Ayinger beers withering on shelves.

That said, if you aren't a Weizen fan, you probably still won't like a Weizenbock. Clove and banana are typical byproducts of a top-fermenting Weizen yeast.

BTW -- why East Germany specific? Ayinger is Southern German through and through.

Very informative, thanks, and I do see plenty of Ayinger brews in the refrigerated cases in beer-centric stores quite commonly on the west coast. Their Weizenbock just seemed so sweet and hard to take. But I looked up some of my old reviews, not that I've had so many of the style but I really liked the Weihenstephaner Vitus and called it "the blueprint of the classic Hefeweizen clove and banana esters. Such a rich mouthful." Alright, call it phenol AND esters.

As to East Germany, I was idly thinking of an out of the way place that might be the right setting for a traditional eating and drinking experience. But maybe you have a better spot in mind!
