Flensburger Pilsener is one I haven't had for almost 10 years, so here it is.

Aroma is that distinctive Euro hop, but not so skunky. Lively and sudsy on the tongue with a light body. Malty to start with a dry finish and a hoppy bite. Plain and mineral finish. A little astringency in the aftertaste sensation. Surprisingly bitter after some sipping, but I guess you're supposed to want another gulp. And for gulping, it's fine. "Best By" date is an optimistic 11/22/2025.

Interesting. We get the flip top bottles at a store near me, but I've never seen the cans. It's probably been over a year since I had one but I recall it was pretty standard good quality German PIls.

A number of years ago while visiting friends in Florida we decided to go to a German restaurant for dinner and I ordered a Flens and it came in the flip top bottle. I have seen some cans of Flens more recently but they have all be quite old so I didn't buy them.
That is consistent with my drinking experience in Florida. I enjoyed that one bottle but didn't order a second.

    Prost!

Having a Tucher Pils that is long in the tooth and is a touch sweet for the style. Hopefully i'll find one much younger to compare in the near future.
    Cheers!

I would think those flip top bottles would be more prone to air getting in and ruining the beer but I have yet to have that with the Flens Pils nor Dunkel and not the Gőller either. Those bottles must be very expensive to package in too.

The math is that air (oxygen) ingress is dependent on both the amount of material and the oxygen permeability of the material used. The material of those flip top bottles are quite substantial. As to the oxygen permeability coefficient of that material?

    Cheers!

This is one of my favorite imported German Kölsch. It's showing its age though. Man, I'd love to drink this fresh on tap. I definitely lean into my locally made in this style for the freshness. Halfway Crooks Beer Farina and Good Word Brewing At the Alter are two outstanding versions here locally. Good Word is having their Father's Day Kölsch service this Sunday. Took my 84 yo dad last year. I'll be out of town this time, but what a nice tradition they started. Prost!

My first time, remarkably, drinking Tucher Rotbier. Unfortunately, this one too has some mileage. But I can tell it is a great beer in its younger days. The head retention is still phenomenal. Prost!

Yes, fresh is indeed best for a delicate beer such as Kölsch.

Below is something I posted 10 years ago about a Kölsch draft beer event at a local craft beer bar:

“Earlier this evening I was at a local beer bar where they had an ‘event’ of a Kolsch weekend. They had five different draft beers from Cologne that were all served in 0.2 liter Stange glasses. I ordered all five of those German brewed beer and a re-order of my favorite: Sunner Unfiltered Kölsch beer (‘labeled’ as Sunner Kellerbier in Germany).

Chris (the bartender who ran this event) even mentioned to me: “I saved you the cost of airfare to Germany”

From memory the other four Kölsch beers were Fruh, Reissdorf, Gaffel and Sunner (filtered).
I too generally go for US brewed Kölsch beers for freshness. I recently purchased a six-pack of Von Trapp Kölsch and I still have a couple of cans left in the fridge.

    Cheers to fresh Kölsch beer!!!

Chris, indeed, did bring a taste of Bavaria to you. We have a German beer bar here in downtown Atlanta called Der Biergarten. It's one of the few places we can get authentic German beers more fresh on tap. It is, unfortunately a nasty, 35 to 60 minute drive into downtown Atlanta from me. I just noticed they have Rothaus Pilsner on draft right now. Thinking about it, I don't think I've ever seen them have a German imported Kolsch on draft there. Cheers to fresh Kolsch!

Just a pedantic point of order, Köln/Cologne is not in Bavaria.

With round 1 had an "Italian" Pilsner, a dry hopped German-Style Pils utilizing all Riverbend malt (Asheville maltster), and a blend of Saaz, Sterling, Perle, and Saphir hops. Definitely lacked the bready/cracker flavors. The hopping was pretty well done.
And with round 2 had a Radeberger Pils. It was packaged on 1-20-25, best thru 4-2026. Fairly fresh relatively speaking.

Paulaner Hefe-Weizen. Another solid German Weissbier. Tasting particularly good on this 92°F day in N. GA.

Here's a Dortmunder Export Lager called Edelstoff from Augustiner.

Aroma is delicate and grainy with a hint of melon and grass. Taste is cereal with a slight herbal finish. Clean and crisp. This is quite light in every way, but the lingering malty flavor is pleasant. Overall, an excellent light Lager but with more alcohol.

Glad you posted this one. That's an excellent beer and the only one from Augustiner that was available to me here in GA up until last year when the Helles started showing up. I like that gainy note it has and what I look for in American made Helles versions. The head retention is great, too.The reason we all love and appreciate German beers! Prost!
