I have not been here very long but I am a huge fan of Bavarian style beers. Having lived in Bavaria for a few decades I have had my share of Bavarian beers. I am on a crusade. In the last month I have added 50 breweries and over 400 beers from Bavaria to the BA data base. There will be alot more as I have only gone through about 20% of the counties so far. Lots of work yet to do. Making Bavarian Beers Great Again!
So many breweries - so little time. I confirmed yesterday that my guided beer excursion in September has sold enough seats that the trip is a Go. However, not enough personal time from the group to explore. Hopefully there can be a future trip.
Here's the link for the trip with the itinerary embedded in there. It looks like we have the evenings free on Wednesday and Thursday in Bamberg, but the agenda is a bit fluid so that a group dinner may be added either/both nights. https://www.tripsbeertrips.com/products/untappd-epic-german-bier-experience I'll go to PM for the rest of this conversation.
Added 500 beers now. Had to slow down a bit while up here in Berlin. Glad I am heading back to the Kingdom today.
In Nuremberg, across from Hutt'n (skip it) is Hausbrauerei Altstadthof - Rotbierstüberl, the home of Rotbier, slam dunk maibock (wrong time of year), but do well on all counts + good food. The Bratwursthäusle is very good, the little Nuremberg sausages are fantastic-order at least 6, sauerkraut, potato salad and obatzda. They serve Tucher beer which easy enough to drink but save yourself for the others. For late afternoon/evening, try to do visit Schanzenbräu Schankwirtschaft, enjoy the small biergarten, bier and food. They don't get many tourists so if you break off 3 to 5 of ya would be welcomed.
Hi... why skip Hutt'n? I've had some great meals there, especially their Bratwurstgulasch... and washed down with a Smokey George! Fucking aye!! Prost!
Thanks for the tips. We're planning a day or two with a former exchange student whose aunt lives there. She supposedly knows all the good places. Now I have my own list.
Along time ago the Hutt'n was the best beer bar in Nürnberg. Espcially in thier old location, now it is really bad. They used to have like 100 plus local beers now they have like two. The food has dropped in quality as well. It is a shell of what it once was. I too avoid the place now. The Altstadthof is a great stop. Krista the short batender in the daytime has been there for over 30 years. I always stop there when in town.
In Cochem today and tomorrow. Any good pub odor Gasthaus recommendations? This appears to be more of a wine drinking region, but it would be pleasant to mix things up a bit with a nice pils, helles or export. Supposed to be pretty warm today.
Most definitely the Mosel wine growing region. You might find a bar or pizza place that has Bitburger as they are the big brewery on that region. It never hurts to ask the locals for recommendations. I was through there 26 years ago. Your not far from Burg Eltz which is a good castle to tour, if you like castles.
Thanks. Yes, Bitburger is pretty ubiquitous in Cochem. I'm not a huge fan of Bitburger beer, but was able to find a local helles that I enjoyed. Otherwise, I drank a lot of Riesling, which was fine. Plenty of other places to find good beer on our trip. The castle tour is a given on these Viking trips. Very nice views of the city up there. Cochem was a very picturesque town, though a bit touristy. Still, we had a very nice time there.
Burg Eltz? That one is down in a narrow valley. There is no lack of castles in Germany. The Mosel wines are general sweeter than the Rheingau wines. What parts of Germany are you covering?
My mistake. I just assumed you were referring to the Reichsburg castle, which overlooks the town. So no, we were unable to visit Burg Eltz. And yes, my experience has been that the Mosel wines are generally sweeter and more fruit driven then the Rhiengau wines (though of course there are plenty of exceptions to the general rule). So, this trip has been a bit unusual. This is the first time I've been to Cochem, and after that we went to Winningen (not Koblenz, which was unusual). Tomorrow we go to Heidelberg, but by way of Miltenberg (where our boat docks). After that there's a day in Wurzburg, followed by a stop in Bamberg. From there we're busing over to Prague, followed by stops in Krakow and Warsaw.
Miltenberg is home of Faust Barrie, which makes IMO one of the top 5 Pils in Germany. You can get this beer at their own tavern, sum Riesen, which is the oldest Gastwirtschaft (pub) in Germany. Food's great there, too. If you're label, ask around for a tour of the brewery, but that's only on weekends, I think. The brewery is built right into the mountain side. There was an even a Beer Advocate brewery tour in 2014, check it out here.
