Tonight Im sharing a beer I picked up while i was in Alberta a few weeks ago. This is Town Square Brewing in Edmonton, Alberta. The beer is Liquid Lullaby Imperial Stout, BBA version in Buffalo Trace barrels. Beer clocks in at 10.6%, which is probably the biggest beer I saw in Calgary.

    onto my review:

Sampling a 16 oz can at cellar temp poured into my snifter. picked up at the Alberta Beer Exchange while visiting Calgary. No date stamp on the can or label.
The beer pours a dark cola color with only faintest light shining through the edges of my glass. A creamy beige head of about 2.5 cm foams up on the pour. A sturdy edge layer and one large surface island rests on the top of the beer.
There is some dense lattice when I swirl or take a sip.
Aroma is dark chocolate, like bakers cocoa, some charred wood, hints of vanilla and bourbon. No hop notes and not fusol or spicy on the nose either.
First sip reveals a medium body with smooth creamy texture and very fine gentle carbonation. There is a bit of a coating on my palate after each sip.
Flavor is what the nose predicts with some dark cocoa, charred wood and a bit of bourbon note too. Again no hop notes anywhere. The dark cocoa is fairly bitter actually and I think that may cover some of the sweeter bourbon hints. Not boozy though and Im drinking this beer fairly quickly. Glad I picked this one up while in Alberta, Id buy this one again if I was travelling north.

    Good evening all!
Tonight I have one that I bought for a future SAN and found another *on sale* so thought I’d try it first.
Pour is used oil black with a dark brown head that covers the surface for almost 3 full seconds. (Okay, 4)
The taste is very good, not what I expected from a whiskey barrel aged stout, but still very good. Not sweet like a bourbon barrel aging but not sharp like other whiskey barrel aged stouts I have had.
It actually tasted like it had peanuts involved, which was way out of left field. Very odd but not off putting.
The feel is nicely viscous, a very pleasant sipping beer for a long movie. Or whatever.
OA, while not what I expected, it is still very good and I enjoyed every sip.
This is one and done for me tonight-
    Cheers!

...close to medium carbonation with a just above average body.
... aroma is dark roasted mixed grains, malt, cereal, some dark chocolate
...taste is dry, dark chocolate, toasted grains and cereal. A dried, unsweetened cherry shows up in the aftertaste

Book Club is a Czech Dark Lager from Gold Dot Beer in the Northwes-- or 13° Tmavé Pivo with with Sládek and Saaz hops if you prefer.

Malty and warm plus the moderately charred grain flavor. Mouthfeel is watery yet enlivened with the lush frothy feeling. Dark and winey with a bitter finish. It's sort of an Export Stout but lightened up a notch. This is really very good. The dark flavors and grain make it a substantial mouthful and the slight malty sweetness rounds it off.

Craig, nothing to add but Jon and you are awesome, as is the lineup from the Southern California meetup last night. Will add the many I’ve also met in Chicago, Wisconsin and Michigan.

New Beer Sunday #1068 starts now, with the promised second Hop Butcher For The World selection, named for the only state I can drive to I have yet to reach.

8/10/25 - (Home) (Chicago. Illinois) Can Notes:
Purchased a single 16 oz can at Beer on the Wall store temperature on 5/6/25 for $3.98 including tax, refrigerated until opening this morning. Canned 4/29/25 @ 10:07:35 AM, can stamp JPK, XO. 5.75% ABV Mosaic & Belma-Hopped American Pale Ale brewed with raspberry. Tasting notes: Bright Citrus, Ripe Berry, Pleasant grass. Artwork by Dan Grzeca. Brewed and canned by Hop Butcher For The World in Chicago, Illinois and Bedford Park, Illinois.

Appearance: Poured about 2/3 of the can into a shaker pint glass, yielding a murky orange yellow base and a bubbly bright white head that leaves a bubbly cover over the base. 3.5

Aroma: Light citrus after a few attempts, nothing else I can identify. 3.0

Taste: Much stronger and enjoyable. Citrus, fresh cut grass, pine and raspberries. As the brewer intended. All come together well. 4.0

Mouthfeel: Sweet, though enough bittering hops to keep this reasonable. Drinks light and easy, perhaps a tad below the 5.75% ABV. Lightly dry, faint gentle carbonation and a medium creamy body. Citrus pine raspberries consistent through the finish. 4.25

Overall: I’ll revisit with a fresher version (my fault sleeping on it this long in my refrigerator), but I am digging this modern APA take. Everything but the near AWOL aroma seems to have held up well, and I’d revisit this in the future. 4.0

16 oz can canned 7/18/25 into a pokal.
L: Pours clear yellow gold with steady carbonation, a thin soapy white head that quickly recedes to edge foam, light spotty lacing.
S: Green pasture grass, a hint of bright fruits, mainly a herbal hop note.
T: Grassy hops, light fruit zest, pear, citrus, a hint of dry yellow fruit bread, light yeast, berries, a hint of concord grape, cereal grains.
F: Crisp, bright medium-light bodied mouthfeel with a medium length lightly dry finish.
O: Brilliant tasting with a beautiful feel. Fruity cereal grains, bright grassy hop notes with a snappy feel. Very easy to drink. It is excellent in its style.

Budvar (Czechvar) from Budějovický Budvar, n.p.

Poured a 500ml can into a seidel. A two finger bubbly white head on a clear dark gold. The head diminishes to a layer.

Creamy malts in the nose. Biscuit in the taste, Somewhat mild for the style. Slightly sweet. A long mild hop finish.

Mouthfeel is a medium/light body and good carbonation. Overall a solid Czech pilsner.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this beer. It is quite sweet, but it is well made.

From a 16oz can purchased at the brewery. No date on the can.

This beer looks brown as I pour it into the glass. There's good clarity to the beer. There's a 2 finger off white/tan colored head. The head retention is good. There's minimal lacing on the glass.
Aroma is quite sweet. I get a good hit of maple on my nose that combines with some brown sugar. I am getting a faint hint of coffee hitting my nose.
Taste - Right away the coffee hits. There's a nice bitterness to the coffee. Once it fades the brown sugar and maple come into play big time. These flavors are quite sweet and that's the finish to the beer.
The sweetness in this beer is quite clingy, and just sticks in my throat. The beer is quite full bodied. Smooth going down.
I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I bought this beer. It is quite sweet, and I'm not the biggest sweets fan. I do think it is a well made beer, and if you're into a sweeter beer, I'd recommend it.

I think there's at least one more in me today. Be back later for more.

Drekker Beneath The Coconut Palms Tropical Sour, 6.6% ABV. Pours dark red with a half-finger pink head that left no lacing. Aroma is tropical, raspberry, and coconut. Taste is strong raspberry, tropical fruit, and coconut, quite sweet, moderately tart. OK mouthfeel, overall excellent.

    Howdy, NBWers!

I've got a new American-made wild ale in the glass:
12.7 oz. bottle poured into vertical tulip • Batch No. Six • 6.3% ABV
(no born-on or best-by dating on label or bottle)

The one-liner here would be a well-made farmhouse/wild ale that doesn't deliver much in the way of blackberry flavor from the refermentation but is still a tasty, funky adventure.

The highlight is the aroma, which starts off as a perfect split of sour-sweet notes — tart lemon and funky barnyard mixed with blackberries and even hints of sweet blackberry jam. The flavor is almost all tart up front, very lemon forward with classy bits of funk, nothing overbearing in that department. Over time there are the faintest of hints of berry fruit in the long finish, but the never really materialize.

My experience with these kinds of beers leads me to offer two points worth mentioning: 1.) "refermented on fruit" is very different from a beer that simply has fruit added, and 2.) freshness matters big time. It's also worth mentioning that blackberries can be very tart and not sweet at all — all of which I realize.

However, if you put "blackberry" on your label, I'm expecting at least hints of that fruit flavor to show up in your beer. Here it really doesn't, and while that doesn't ruin the whole show, it does take it down a notch.

    Official review:

    3.98 (0.0% rDev)

Nailed it! :stuck_out_tongue: Seriously, I never agree with anybody, but the Blutarsky-like 0.0% rDev rating doesn't surprise. There is something so obviously borderline about this brew — it's clearly a 4.0 beer going on 5.0. Literally one pinch of sweet blackberry in the flavor and I'd be thinking hard about scoring it 5s across the board and buying more, which is saying something b/c it is not cheap.

Speaking of funky adventures, I loaded up Rosalind the Cat on Friday afternoon and headed west for the Shakespeare at Winedale Festival. Rosalind hates car rides, but she handled the whole thing very well and took good care of our hotel room in Brenham while I was muching about in the countryside, and the students' version of "Twelfth Night" was worth the trip.
