@Bavarican Same here for West Michigan where I'm 25 miles from Bell's and 75 miles from Founders, to name two biggies.

Yeah ... been to Europe 35+ times, and never a package tour. Have always planned my own... love doing it... planned a 5-month tour of Europe with my new bride all on my own back in 1986... no internet!!!

    But, to each their own!

    Prost!!

To each their own, for sure. Like you, all of my European trips were self-planned and executed, but I have to say I've been tempted by the idea of someone doing the leg work for me and possibly having connections I could never make.

But yeah, phone calls and faxes to Munich hotels were pretty exciting, but heading to Berlin with no accommodation booked was more than a little daunting the year after the wall fell. Good investment, those German classes.

Fortunately, I don't have to travel those distances to find good fresh beer!

    I can, but I don't have to.

Well me either, but @Bavarican might not be as impressed by my close-by locals, although all three make very good beer.

I arrived in Berlin early AM via overnight train in October 1990, just prior to Reunification Day. Was able to get a room in a private apartment via the city tourist office... was a GRAND time!!!
    Prost!!

The trip organizer has told me that enough seats have now been sold for this trip, however there is still room for 4 more people if anyone here is considering signing up to go.

Very excited for you! My family is from Burghaslach, which is about 30mi. from Forchheim. Their local brewery was Brauerei Finster, which closed in the 1990’s. Supposedly the distillery in town is brewing their old recipes.

    Prost!

The trip has begun. We're in London for a few days first, so no detailed report for now. Had a Timothy Taylor Landlord at the first pub we visited... it's a good beer but maybe a bit over-hyped. Will be in Munich on Thursday.

When you come back to Munich and meet up bring a couple of Frankish beers with you and we can trade.

Frankish? Can't find anything about it. British brewery or beer name?

I think it's possible he means Franconian. Are you going to Bamberg before Munich?

Yep, I'll be in Bamberg before the meet-up. I'll have room in my luggage. Any specific requests, @Bavarican ?

Not really I don't get up there very often. I will bring some from here (Ukraine Micros) and the Alps for you.

Our first half day in Germany wasn't very exciting, other than I took a hard spill exiting on one of those damned moving sidewalks at the airport and sprained my wrist. Don't know if I can hoist a mass of beer, but then that's why I have two hands, isn't it? But I'll write this brief report just to let you know that we've arrived.

We checked into our hotel and then shortly after that we started out for the Hirschgarten biergarten. After three blocks we realized that we were dead tired, so we retreated to the hotel lounge for a couple Tegernsee beers (Pils and Hell). Had a bowl of goulash and some pizza (real German, right?) to go with. (Can't get the pics to load correctly, so this is a read-only post.)

Gotta' get some laundry done this morning, then we'll start out for the biergarten again. The official tour starts tomorrow. More later.

I'm halfway thru a pork knuckle and a 0.5L of Augustiner Hell. Wrist is feeling better already.

We found our way to the Augustiner Biergarten in Hirschgarten Park. It was only a 15 minute walk.

It's an overcast, cool day with some sprinkles. The covered, heated patio is the smoking section which reeked, so we chose to sit inside for table service.

I ordered an Augustiner Hell to go with my half of a roast pork knuckle, and my wife chose the Konig Ludwig Dunkel to accompany her Roulade. I later ordered an Augustiner Edelstoff to help finish off that knuckle.

Stopped at an Aldi during the walk back to the hotel to get a can of Lowenbrau Munchner Hell to drink in the room. It may be my only opportunity to drink this brand on this trip. More pics in the following post(s) I hope.
