I was suspicious that 'Vollbier' wasn't a style name per se, so I gave it a quick Google while on the bus but didn't spend much effort reading it. Thanks. It was an excellent beer.

Perhaps I have just never been the greatest fan of U. I first remember thinking it tasted rather like Draught Bass, which is not a bad thing, just slightly surprising for a German lager. More recently I found it blander. But all these differences are well within the tolerance range of imperfect memory.

"Bland" is a good choice of a single word description. I probably had the beer 8 years ago when I was there but I'd have to check my notes to see my impression back then.

I did not find the Mahr's U beers I tasted (granted over a decade ago) as being bland. I found them to be very tasty/enjoyable balanced lagers. FWIW I preferred this beer when served on cask via gravity pour. Maybe those beers were 'better' because of a freshness factor?

    Cheers!

Supposedly, Knörzla is Rotbier, though it doesn't look terribly rot.

Keesmann Herren Pils is often considered the best Fränkish Pilsner. I enjoy it when I get it. Great family brewery there - I have only had great experiences there. I will have to try Brauerei Bayer on my next de-stress trip overseas.

I didn't catch what the relationship is between Gruner Baum and Brauerei Bayern is, but Bayern must be the brand name under the ownership name of Gruner Baum.

I don't recall 'Rotbier' being a word used to describe the beer. Untappd uses the style category of Amber Lager, but I'm pretty sure they also have a 'Historical' category.

It is a locally produced Amber Lager that is call "Rotbier" Nürnberg is the hot seat for it. Some people might refer to it as a Vienna

The ones I've had are bigger in body than what a Vienna should be. But definitely in the "historic" category.

    Thursday -
Again, the best laid plans.... Yep, the itinerary wasn't the same as the original plan, but some of it was due to a request from our group. We felt that we were having to eat too much at the various lunch stops after a big breakfast at our hotels, so a planned lunch at Brauerei Altstadt turned into just a stop for biers. But to get something into our stomaches before drinking biers, our tour guide had the bus driver stop at a pretzel shop that had a smorgasbord of everything pretzel. So with eating light now accomplished, we got on with our day.

It's all becoming a blur and I have to rely upon my notes to write this report. But I'm failing to write the detailed notes that I should be keeping. But here goes....

The bus took us from Bamberg to Nurnberg, and after dropping off our luggage at the hotel and eating our light lunch, we went to Brauerei Altstadt in the old city section. It was a gorgeous weather day so that made all of the old architectural features of the buildings just pop out!

At Brauerei Altstadt my wife and I enjoyed a sampler flight of the rotbier, the kellerbier, and their schwarzbier. All were very good. Strangely enough though, as they all warmed they lost the peak flavor that we had enjoyed at first. Maybe we were just overthinking our enjoyment.

When looking at the bier menu I noticed a Roter-Bock, a style that I've never seen before. I ordered a small pour of it, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think it had an abv of 5.7%, and it packed a lot of flavor in that abv.

We continued to walk around the Altstadt for a while to enjoy the scenery before heading to Brauerei Schanzenbräu, also in Nurnberg. Here we toured the brewing facility after a classroom presentation by the owner during which we enjoyed one of the six beers on tap. My wife had the Rotbier and I enjoyed an NA Helles. During the tour we had the opportunity to drink samples from the lagering tanks of the rotbier and their roter-bock. Both were a week from packaging.

We then had free time in the city center to explore before going to Landbierparodies, which I understand is a small chain of biergartens. We enjoyed dinner along with a couple biers. I had a Landbier, which I think is contract brewed for them to carry their name, plus a marzen hell from Brauerei Richard Wagner. Both were tasty biers.

Tomorrow we head to Freising for the last day of this tour. More to come.

Our lunch spot - an experience to see pretzels fixed in so many ways

"Zum Grünen Baum" appears to be the historic name of the Brauerei Gasthof Bayer as it is on the building in the photos and the the Green Tree is on the crest of the Brauerei Gasthof Bayer.
