Happy Monday BAs! Here's an excellent beer that I haven't had in a while: the local bottle shop finally brought in some fresh Ritterguts Gose. I'd better stock up while I can. Cheers!

 

Starting light today since as soon as my PBR drinking wife gets off work she's taking me out to celebrate the fact that I've survived 70 orbits around the sun.

Banded Brewing Gourd Lord (Biddeford Maine), pumpkin lager

There are plenty of pumpkin ales out there. This one is a little different, a pumpkin lager. I'm a huge pumpkin beer fan and this one has become one of my favorites.

Appearance is slightly hazy, yellow-orange, translucent. Pours with no head at all. Only slightly effervescent, just enough to let you know yeast have been at work.

Smell subtly hints at pumpkin but doesn't whack you over the head with it like many pumpkin beers. Aroma is a little surprising, in a good way. It's definitely not a typical pumpkin ale, and definitely not heavily spiced. You want to drink it.

Taste knocks it out of the part (at least for me). Smooth, mellow, nice balance of subtle pumpkin goodness with lager breadiness. The label says 'spiced' but the spice content is blissfully restrained. No overwhelming nutmeg or cinnamon (if they're even there at all). On the light side, finishes nicely dry and crisp with very little lingering bitterness.

Feel sticks with you for several minutes after each sip, in a good way. When the feel is gone it's time for another sip.

Overall this one is a very pleasant surprise. After too many Shipyard Pumpkinheads at bars (nothing against it but it's a little too obvious and simple), Gourd Lord is delightful. I only bought a 4-pack yesterday which I plan to remedy with several more tomorrow.

It's a winner.
